Avatar: The way of water (2022) - Review
Until a few months ago, if you had not yet seen Avatar 2: The Way of water it seemed that you had been living under rocks. It gave the feeling that you should have seen it and somehow take sides on whether or not it was a good movie, opine on the good and bad things it left you with. About six months after its theatrical release I managed to see it and here is my opinion of it.
Hasta hace algunos meses, si aún no habías visto Avatar 2: The Way of water parecía que habías vivido debajo de las piedras. Daba la sensación de que debías haberla visto y de alguna forma tomar partido en si fue o no una buena película, opinar lo bueno y lo malo que te dejó. Unos seis meses después de su estreno en las salas de cine logré verla y aquí está mi opinión de ella.
Avatar: The way of water was released thirteen years after its first installment. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) faces a new human invasion of Pandora and seeks to balance his responsibilities as a Na'vi citizen and his family responsibilities. That will take him to other unknown (to us) places within Pandora, namely aquatic territories dominated by the Metkayina.
The well-known James Cameron is back in the director's chair. We already know that when James has managed to have great productions. So the bar was already high when the long-awaited date of this release approached. Also, well-known actors return to play their roles in this sequel, like Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang.
What drives us to go to the movies and buy tickets to see it? What drives us to move our thumbs to select it on our streaming services? I think more curiosity than the desire to see it. I know few fans of this first installment. We thought it was an interesting movie, very modern, futuristic even, and we enjoyed watching it. But fans? Few, but we still had to go to see it, and anyway, we come from a pandemic that we longed for the return of great productions.

Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) enfrenta una nueva invasión de humanos a Pandora y busca equilibrar sus responsabilidades como ciudadano Na'vi y sus responsabilidades familiares. Eso lo llevará a otros sitios desconocidos (para nosotros) dentro de Pandora, a saber, territorios acuáticos dominado por los Metkayina.
El archiconocido James Cameron vuelve a ponerse en la silla de director. Ya sabemos que cuando James ha logrado tener grandes producciones. Así que ya estaba la barra alta cuando se acercó la esperada fecha de éste estreno. También, actores conocidos vuelven a interpretar sus papeles en ésta secuela, como Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver y Stephen Lang.
¿Qué nos mueve a ir al cine y comprar boletos para verlo? ¿Qué nos impulsa a mover nuestros pulgares para seleccionarla en nuestros servicios de streaming? Creo que más la curiosidad que las ganas de verlo. Conozco a pocos fans de ésta primera entrega. Nos pareció una interesante película, muy moderna, futurista incluso, y que disfrutamos viéndola. Pero ¿fans? Pocos, pero igual había que ir a verla, y total, venimos de una pandemia que anhelábamos la vuelta de grandes producciones.
THE TOPICS ADDRESSED
I am impressed with the depth of topics covered, as I was with the 2009 edition. I have not seen interviews of James Cameron as writer and director, so I could be wrong with some of my assertions. But, to my mind, the themes are very obvious, drawn from current circumstances and current in these years.
**The destruction of the environment is obvious. The film brings out one of the worst faces of the human race in the face of deforestation and damage to the environment, both to its flora and fauna in a relentless way, either for colonization or to bring modernism. Although it is true that this issue is being addressed and many large constructions today are very friendly to the environment, the damage done is impressive. Just as impressive are the scenes of the arrival of "the men from above" to Pandora, with their large ships and weapons of destruction that make you feel like you've stepped into the wrong movie theater. Destruction in a very graphic way that inevitably evokes great dread as we remember that similar things happened (and happen) on our own planet.
Human history has shown movements of colonization of places unknown to one society different from another, and through force and other deterrents have sought to take advantage of others. Discovering a new continent has been profitable, but many question the way it developed and the price the natives paid. Again, in this edition of James Cameron, the insistent desire to conquer new territory at the expense of force, intimidation and violence is shown. Is it really necessary to continue with this?
One of the most sensitive parts I think we have in the film is the issue of animal abuse, and especially whales, which although we know is an important and hot topic, perhaps it is not talked about or avoided as much as it should be. The tulkun are marine creatures whose resemblance to whales is evident. And I find it appalling that James has created and shown in great detail a method of killing them so ruthlessly. What could be the motive for doing so if not to evoke our awareness of what is happening several miles from home? I can find no other motive, because entertaining that.... few would.
A family fleeing to another territory fleeing a war, sound familiar? For me, this film has its roots in the theme of immigration as one of its plot ideas. The process of adaptation, the cultural difference between one and the other, the rejection by some of the locals, the idea of accepting or not the physical traits that distinguish us, the difficult situation that the youngest have to handle this new stage...
LOS TEMAS ABORDADOS
Me impresiona la profundidad de los temas abordados, al igual que lo tuvo la edición de 2009. No he visto entrevistas de James Cameron como guionista y director, así que pudiera estar equivocado con algunas de mis afirmaciones. Pero, a mi juicio, los temas son muy evidentes, extraídos de circunstancias actuales y vigentes en estos años.
La destrucción del medio ambiente es algo que resulta evidente. La filmación saca a relucir una de las peores caras de la raza humana ante la deforestación y el daño al medio ambiente, tanto a su flora como a su fauna de forma implacable, bien sea para la colonización como también para traer el modernismo. Aunque es cierto de que éste tema se está atendiendo y muchas grandes construcciones hoy son muy amigables con el medio ambiente, los daños hechos son impresionantes. Tal como impresionantes son las escenas de la llegada de "los hombres de arriba" a Pandora, con sus grandes naves y armas de destrucción que parece que te has metido en la sala de cine equivocada. Destrucción de forma muy gráfica que inevitablemente evoca un gran espanto al recordar que cosas similares sucedieron (y suceden) en nuestro propio planeta.
La historia humana ha mostrado movimientos de colonización de lugares desconocidos para una sociedad diferente a otra, y mediante la fuerza y otros elementos disuasivos han buscado aprovecharse de los demás. Descubrir un nuevo continente ha sido provechoso, pero muchos cuestionan la forma en que se desarrolló y el precio que pagaron los nativos. De nuevo, en ésta edición de James Cameron, se muestra el insistente deseo de conquistar un nuevo territorio a expensas de la fuerza, intimidación y violencia. ¿De verdad es necesario seguir con ésto?
Una de las partes más sensibles que creo que tenemos en el film es el tema del trato a los animales, y en especial a las ballenas, que aunque sabemos que es un tema importante y candente, tal vez no se hable ni se busque evitar tanto como se debiera. Los tulkun son criaturas marinas cuyo parecido con las ballenas es evidente. Y me parece espantoso de que James haya creado y mostrado de forma muy detallada un método para matarlas de forma tan despiadada. ¿Cuál podría ser el motivo de hacerlo sino evocar nuestra consciencia de lo que está sucediendo a varios kilómetros de nuestro hogar? No encuentro otro motivo, porque entretenerse con eso.... pocos lo harían.
Una familia huyendo a otro territorio huyendo de una guerra. ¿Te suena familiar? Para mi, éste film hunde sus raíces en el tema de la inmigración como una de sus ideas para desarrollar la trama. El proceso de adaptación, la diferencia cultural entre unos y otros, el rechazo por parte de algunos de los lugareños, la idea de aceptar o no los rasgos físicos que nos distinguen, la difícil situación que tienen los más jóvenes de manejar esa nueva etapa...
A SIMPLE STORY
My experience with James Cameron's films tells me that he seeks to entertain with simple stories. We won't have that movie where they are telling you several stories at the same time that will intertwine with each other at some point in the movie (or not): while these are looking for a ring those are looking for the finger to put it on that at the same time there is another group looking to find out whose ring it is because possibly the team that goes before them in a parallel universe is the real father of the protagonist's son. No sir! None of that! The story is kept simple, a single front with some logical strands: a family adapting to a new culture and locale while the enemies keep getting closer and closer to them.
I think this is a predominant one in the material the director has been presenting, which helps a bit in managing the time you invest in front of the screen. I mean, there won't be a moment of absent-mindedness where you're wondering after an hour and a half of film: "Hey, wait a minute, where are we going? Why is he there? What's that thing they're looking for? " No, the story is kept simple and follows easily. An example? For the females who only have eyes for Leonardo DiCaprio in his best years, remember that James Cameron directed Titanic. seriously guys! And his story was simple. The woman was finishing detaching herself from one hated love while meeting another who was dazzling her in a similar way as the ladies in the movie theater. And she kept you in expectation, men and women about what was happening on the ship, and as the disaster began, she spent several minutes showing it to you in detail.
ALMOST TOO SIMPLE
However, the story also has some strange things for me, such as that abrupt jump in the creation of some of the characters that if I hadn't seen the first part a few days earlier I would be with big unknowns. Still, they seemed a bit inconsistent to me. A daughter that was conceived in the avatar of the first part? A human son that no one saw in the first part that there was a plan to create him? Damn, what did I miss? Was there a spin-off that had to be seen before coming to see this movie? I think this is one of the low notes of the movie: the appearance of people with little introduction.
UNA HISTORIA SENCILLA
Mi experiencia con las películas de James Cameron me dicen que busca entretener con historias sencillas. No tendremos esa película en la que están relatándote varias historias a la misma vez que se entrelazarán entre sí en algún momento de la película (o no): mientras estos buscan un anillo aquellos buscan el dedo donde ponerlo que a la misma vez hay otro grupo que busca averiguar de quién es el anillo porque posiblemente el equipo que va antes que ellos en un universo paralelo es el verdadero padre del hijo del protagonista. ¡No señor! ¡Nada de eso! La historia se mantiene sencilla, un sólo frente con algunas vertientes lógicas: una familia adaptándose a una nueva cultura y localidad mientras los enemigos se le van acercando cada vez más.
Creo que ésta es una predominante en el material que ha venido presentando el director, lo cual ayuda un poco en manejar el tiempo que inviertes frente a la pantalla. Es decir, no habrá un momento de despiste donde te preguntes luego de una hora y media de película: "Hey, un momento, ¿a donde vamos? ¿Por qué está él ahí? ¿Para qué es eso que están buscando?" No, la historia se mantiene sencilla y se sigue con facilidad. ¿Un ejemplo? Para las féminas que sólo tienen ojos para Leonardo Di Caprio en sus mejores años, recuerden que James Cameron dirigió Titanic. ¡Es enserio muchachos! Y su historia fue sencilla. La mujer se terminaba de desligar a un odioso amor mientras conocía a otro que la estaba encandilando de forma parecida que las damas en la sala de cine. Y te mantuvo en expectación, a hombres y mujeres sobre lo que sucedía en el barco, y al empezar el desastre, te dedicó varios minutos a mostrártelo al detalle.
CASI MUY SENCILLA
Sin embargo, la historia también tiene algunas cosas extrañas para mí, como por ejemplo, ése salto abrupto en la creación de algunos de los personajes que si no hubiera visto la primera parte unos días antes estuviera con grandes incógnitas. Aún así, me parecieron algo inconsistentes. ¿Una hija que fue concebida en el avatar de la primera parte? ¿Un hijo humano que nadie vio en la primera parte que había plan de crearlo? ¡Rayos! ¿De qué me perdí? ¿Acaso había un spin-off que había que ver antes de venir a ver ésta película? Creo que esta es una de las notas bajas de la película: la aparición de personas con poca presentación.
I think the lowest marks I give the film is that, compared to other films by James himself, it does tire you out a bit. It tires because the dialogue isn't that relevant. It tires because the Jake Sully's kids get into trouble unnecessarily, again and again and again and again and again.... where you suddenly feel like you're in a teen movie. It tires because, it's true, the visuals are very high quality, but you want to see more of the story, without being drawn into the details so much.
Do I recommend it?
Yes, of course I recommend it, so you can say: "Yes, I saw it ". And you'll catch up with this year's advanced animation. But please be aware that the story won't be captivating, and you may be left with some unanswered questions. I recommend it for what your eyes and ears will perceive, but not so much for what your heart will feel that you will remember after watching the film.
And we come to the part where I give my opinion: the top 3 phrases. They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, deep, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. Here they are... PUM!
Creo que las notas más bajas que le doy a la película es que, comparado con otras películas del mismo James, sí te cansa un poco. Cansa porque los diálogos no son tan relevantes. Cansa porque los hijos del Jake Sully se meten en problemas de forma innecesaria, una y otra y otra y otra vez.... donde de pronto sientes que estás en una película para adolescentes. Cansa porque, es verdad, el material visual es de muy alta calidad, pero deseas ver más de la historia, sin que te dibujen tanto los detalles.
¿La recomiendo?
Sí, claro que la recomiendo, así podrás decir: "Sí, la vi". Y te pondrás al día con la animación avanzada de éste año. Pero, por favor, ten claro de que la historia no será cautivante, y quizás te queden algunas incógnitas por resolver. Te la recomiendo por lo que tus ojos y oídos percibirán, pero no tanto porque tu corazón llegue a sentir algo que llegues a recordar luego de ver el film.
Y llegamos a la parte donde doy mi opinión: el top 3 de frases. Están aquí por ser bien diseñadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Aquí están... ¡PUM!

An audiovisually impeccable film. Although the story is not one of the best. Even, several of its themes and sequences are reminiscent of the first part, and more if you saw it recently to remember. Maybe, and only maybe, you have to give the third installment a chance, and see if some of the things that made little sense or explanation in this second part can be clarified in the next part. That's what we hope, and that the shape of this water doesn't get murkier.
Una película impecable audiovisualmente. Aunque la historia no es de las mejores. Incluso, varios de sus temas y secuencias recuerdan la primera parte, y más si la viste hace poco para recordar. Tal vez, y sólo tal vez, haya que darle una oportunidad a la tercera entrega, y ver si algunas de las cosas que tuvieron poco sentido o explicación en ésta segunda parte podrán esclarecerse en esa siguiente parte. Eso es lo que esperamos, y que la forma de ésta agua no se torne más turbia.

¡Claro! Indudablemente el material gráfico está muy bien hecho. Es una cosa de vanguardia, donde cuadro por cuadro vale la plata que has invertido para verla. Y la animación del agua es muy difícil. En 3D debe ser una experiencia muy buena. Gracias por detenerte por aquí @florecitamejias . Saludos
Aún no he visto esta película pero amé la primera parte. Me han dicho que esta es muy buena y por los que leo de tu reseña entiendo que hay posiciones encontradas. Aún así quiero verla jejeje. Gracias por tu resumen. Excelente como siempre.
Claro, hay que verla y así tener un criterio propio acerca de ella. La primera entrega fue muy buena, y ésta segunda está muy bien hecha a nivel técnico. Espero que puedas verla pronto, y estés realmente cómoda en ésas tres horas de película. Saludos @belkisa758

Hola amigo la vi hace un par de meses, si tienes razón en lo que dices, ademas no soy amante de películas tan largas, pero me gusto, yo que soy amante de la naturaleza, me encanto todos los paisajes, los efectos especiales buenísimos y la historia tiene potencial.
Me gusta esa última expresión: tiene potencial, porque es verdad, no se desarrolló todo lo que se podía con esos recursos, a mi parecer. Esperamos que precisamente la tercera parte pueda cuidar mejor éstos detalles. Aunque es fácil presumir que veremos al mismo villano reciclado. En cuanto a los paisajes, hay que quitarse el sombrero, porque ya habían creado animales selváticos, y ahora siguen ahora con animales marinos. Un deleite a los sentidos. Saludos @belena2128
Por ahora no la he visto. Recuerdo haber visto la primera película cuando tenía unos 9 años. Sin embargo, lo que más llamaba la atención de la gente en ese entonces era el nivel de detalle en la animación y el CGI, lo cual parece ser el atractivo de esta entrega.
Aunque ahora prefiero ver películas con tramas más elaboradas, es bueno saber que Avatar aún puede llenar teatros. Sin embargo es algo triste que la narrativa no esté a la par de los efectos especiales.

Asi es, es notoria la diferencia entre la calidad de los gráficos y la calidad del guión y de la historia. Pero sirve como para seguir sabiendo lo que pasa con Jake Sully y los suyos. Lo puedes tomar como que preguntaste por alguien y te echaron el cuento de cómo le ha seguido yendo. Y listo. Saludos @jesalmofficial
