With each passing week the wait for the launch of the @holozing game gets more and more interesting. In between news we are designing the plan to participate, financially and in the game itself (well, at least I am). In the meantime, there is always time to have fun using our imagination and drawing skills on our creatures. Today I bring you a fan art about one of them: the whale.

Since I knew the game, this creature caught my attention, since I didn't see clearly at the beginning how a battle between two sea creatures would look like. I'm not saying that they don't exist, but I was simply slow to visualize it in my mind. I also wondered what would be the strategies to take into account in terms of the skills that as a trainer I should start working on them. But all those doubts will be cleared up as the release date approaches.

INSPIRATION

Again, I thought about how this creature could be maintained, fed and trained. And I think food might be something interesting. The whale is one of the animals that needs tons of food daily to satiate itself. Obviously, keeping and caring for a whale in Holo won't end up draining your savings, unless you want to buy one of the whales whose rarity is so great that you'd have to squeeze your wallet completely to get it. But I think it could still make you some money itself.

So, I wanted to depict this creature feeding, and add something fun and imaginative to it. Again, I used paper and my colored pencils that I have kept from my youth.

PROCEDURE

I start by drawing a diagonal line, to help me see the direction I want to give the whale. We know that she tends to lunge from the bottom up when she goes to eat. She does this easily because of the shape of her tail, which is horizontal, not vertical like most whales. I used this line to establish the proportion. Later I added the other characteristic parts, such as the fins, the eye and the details on its tail. The mouth I had to make it up, and I gave him that detail to try to show desire to eat. I think I made it small in comparison to the real proportions of this big animal.

When I finished drawing the sketch with the pencil, I proceeded to outline it with a pencil in black ink. At that moment I take some liberties, separating myself from the outline I have made in order to improve something or try to give it a better silhouette.

When I finish the outline, it's time to pass the eraser gently over it. With that I have the "canvas" ready to fill it with color.

It was a challenge to find some shades. I decided to combine some crayons to get closer to the real ones. That blue reflection that the whale has on some edges is very nice, but I don't have a way to imitate it. So I decided to use a green. It didn't seem so crazy to me since sometimes natural light changes the color of these animals. Besides, who knows if tomorrow this shade will be one of the rarities in the game. Cool!

Once the color is distributed as evenly as possible, I apply force to the crayon in some areas to create the shadows. In doing so, I remember my aunt who, when she saw my drawings as a child, invited me to apply shadows to prevent it from looking so flat.

That is the last step. I can already say that I have finished the main part of the drawing: the whale.

Now I add a few small details. The first one is some krill. These are one of the main foods of whales. They are very tiny, but they consume them in abundance on a daily basis. That's why I wanted to draw three of them running away from this hungry whale. The second thing was bubbles to give the impression of speed and direction, both for the whale and the small prey. And finally, the signature I am using for my hand drawings.

Con cada semana que está pasando se pone más interesante la espera por el lanzamiento del juego @holozing . Entre novedad y novedad estamos diseñando el plan para participar, financieramente y en el juego en sí (bueno, al menos yo lo estoy haciendo). Mientras tanto, siempre hay rato para poder divertirnos usando la imaginación y las habilidades de dibujo sobre nuestras criaturas. Hoy les traigo un fan art sobre una de ellas: la ballena.

Desde que conocí el juego me llamó la atención ésta criatura, en vista que no vi con claridad al principio la forma en que se vería una batalla entre dos criaturas marinas. No estoy diciendo que no existan, sino que sencillamente tardé en visualizarlo en mi mente. También me preguntaba cuál serían las estrategias para tomar en cuenta en cuanto a las habilidades que como entrenador debería de empezar a trabajar en ellas. Pero todas esas dudas serán despejadas a medida que se acerque la fecha de lanzamiento.

INSPIRACIÓN

De nuevo, pensé en cómo ésta criatura podría mantenerse, alimentarse y entrenarse. Y pienso en que el alimento podría ser algo interesante. La ballena es uno de los animales que necesita toneladas de comida diaria para saciarse. Obviamente, mantener y cuidar a una ballena en Holo no terminará acabando con tus ahorros, a menos que quieras comprar una de las ballenas cuya rareza sea tan grande que exprimas tu wallet completamente para obtenerla. Pero creo que igual podría generarte ella misma algo de dinero.

Por eso, quise representar a ésta criatura alimentándose, y agregarle algo divertido producto de la imaginación. De nuevo, usé papel y mis lápices de colores que conservo desde mi juventud.

PROCEDIMIENTO

Empiezo trazando una línea diagonal, para ayudarme a ver la dirección que quiero darle a la ballena. Sabemos que ella suele abalanzarse de abajo hacia arriba cuando va a comer. Lo hace con total facilidad gracias a la forma de su cola, cuya forma es horizontal, y no vertical como la mayoría. Aproveché dicha línea para establecer la proporción. Posteriormente le agregué las demás partes características, como las aletas, el ojo y los detalles en su cola. La boca tuve que inventármela, y le di ese detalle para tratar de mostrar deseo de comer. Creo que la hice pequeña en comparación a las verdaderas proporciones que tiene ese gran animal.

Al terminar de dibujar el boceto con el lápiz, procedo a delinearla con un lapicero a tinta negra. En ese momento me tomo algunas libertades, separándome del trazado que he hecho con el fin de mejorarle algo o tratar de que tenga una mejor silueta.

Cuando termino de hacer el delineado es hora de pasarle el borrador suavemente. Con eso ya tengo el "lienzo" listo para llenarlo de color.

Fue un reto encontrar algunos tonos. Decidí combinar algunos creyones para lograr acercarme a los reales. Ese reflejo azul que tiene la ballena en algunos bordes es muy bonito, pero no tengo como imitarlo. Así que decidí usar un verde. No me pareció tan descabellado en vista que algunas veces la luz natural hace que cambie el color de esos animales. Además, quien sabe si mañana éste tono sea una de las rarezas en el juego. ¡Cool!

Una vez distribuido el color lo más uniforme posible, aplico fuerza al creyón en algunas zonas para crear las sombras. Al hacerlo recuerdo a mi tía quien al ver mis dibujos de niño me invitaba a aplicar sombras para evitar que se viera tan plano.

Ese es el último paso. Ya puedo decir que he terminado la principal del dibujo: la ballena.

Ahora le agrego unos pequeños detalles. El primero es unos krill. Estos son uno de los principales alimentos de las ballenas. Son muy diminutos, pero los consumen en abundancia a diario. Por eso quise dibujar tres de ellos huyendo de ésta ballena hambrienta. Lo segundo fue burbujas para dar la impresión de tener velocidad y dirección, tanto para la ballena como para las pequeñas presas. Y por último, la firma que estoy usando para mis dibujos a mano.
