Maintenance required on my bicycle || Mantenimiento necesario a mi bicicleta

It is a pleasure for me to write for the first time in this community. The bicycle is my main means of transportation when I don't walk. And I have learned that it is necessary to give it regular and quality maintenance to keep it in optimal conditions. In this post I want to tell you how was the last maintenance I did a few days ago.

I've had this bike for a few years and in the last maintenance I've done on it I go to a friend named Juan. I ride a few miles to his house where he has all his tools and can help me while I spend time talking and watching him work. As you will see, on this trip I took the opportunity to look at a book about Guinness records. I was surprised to see some pages dedicated to motorcycles and bicycles. What a coincidence, isn't it?

On this visit I went on time for a couple of problems I was noticing on the bike. The first one was in the right pedal. Every few cycles it was knocking, as if something was broken inside. Upon uncovering it, Juan detected that the ammunition was split and that was causing residue that was splitting other ammunition when it was still moving. The solution: replace all the ammunition.

1700003492697.jpg1700003492817.jpg

Despite having that problem in only one pedal, he decided to service both. He had a new, unused package of ammunition and told me he would take it from there. I decided to buy one to replace that material. First item for purchase.

The second problem was between the pedals. I do not remember the name of that part, and I understand that for translation reasons and also because of variations in the language in Spanish-speaking countries, you, dear reader, know the parts I show by another name. So I try to explain myself as universally as possible. In that place I also heard a knock every few pedal cycles. Juan uncovered it to check it.

There is something called cups that was splitting all the way down the middle, and the ammunition was also deteriorated. This caused the bolt to start scratching. I even ran the risk of the cup splitting inside the bore of the bike frame and getting it out would be extremely complicated. So this maintenance was just in time. The solution: buy new cups.

Having all the diagnosis, I told Juan to explain to me what I would buy as if I were a 5 year old, as I am still learning. I took notes and samples of everything. He lent me his bike to go to the parts sale. By the way, his bike only had brakes on the rear wheel and had two of the seven gears on the sprocket working, how about that? But hey, I survived riding there, went and came back with the parts. I spent $14.

Juan had been busy cleaning the parts he had disassembled, and used new grease for everything. Then he installed what I brought him and started putting everything back together. I like using him because I know him and he has all his tools. That's vital for this, simple, it's not the same to drive a nail into the wall by hitting it with a screwdriver as with a hammer, is it? He has gradually acquired that equipment which is a bit strange but unique to the cycling world.

1700003492910.jpg1700003492958.jpg

He never wants to charge me, but I have to insist. So I managed to agree on a payment and I'm happy to make it. I went out pedaling on my bike without the problems I had that very morning. Everything solved. And now I realize that I didn't even take a picture of me riding my bike to show how happy I was that day. Well, I'll be more attentive for the next one.

Preventive maintenance makes sure that the problems don't become so big and aggravate in such a way that we need big investments and spare parts. However, I still can't get to that point of maintaining it properly. Busyness and other things make me delay it more than necessary. Still, I want to continue to keep my bike in the best shape possible. Thanks for riding with me this far, see you next time!

Me sorprendió ver unas páginas dedicadas a motocicletas y bicicletas. Que coincidencia, ¿no?

1700003492617.jpg

Hello @aaalviarez - I enjoyed reading the English version of your post because I used to ride a bike a lot.

In the Spanish version you wrote,

Juan detectó que las municiones estaban partidas

And you translated it like this:

Juan detected that the ammunition was split

I immediately understood what you intended, but while the word "municiones" can mean "ammunition" (or "munitions") in English, in this context you should write "ball bearing."

As for the metal parts that contained ball bearings, I would call the whole thing a "sprocket," but I'm not a mechanic or an expert when it comes to machinery, so I looked it up and discovered that it is called a "ball bearing sprocket," and the circular parts might be called "races."

Wikipedia has a whole page on "ball bearings" and uses terms such as "races" to describe the circular metal parts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_bearing

All very enjoyable!

I'm now following you on Hive! 😊

Yes, you are probably right. Translating sometimes changes the meaning, and more so in technical languages of each area, such as cycling. Thanks for this research, I appreciate it very much. I will keep it in mind as I continue to post here. Regards @hirohurl

Hello and welcome to the Cycling community!
How lucky are younwith such a friend!
Maintenance on a bicycle can be very expensive, but if you have the knowledge and tools you can do a lot yourself.

Funny that your friend didn't do maintenance on his own bicycle to fiz the break and gears 😀

Yes, it is impressive. There is a popular saying that I don't know who invented it that says: "In a blacksmith's house, a wooden knife", alluding to the fact that sometimes people don't have the goods or services they are good at at home. Thank you for commenting on my publication and I filled the requirements to add value. I would like to continue posting here my experiences with bicycles. I wish you all the best with the growth of this community. Best regards @hive-177745
