Dad’s surprise.

Good day to you all here on hive.

I remain this humble soul who is always ready to appreciate my existence on the surface, once we realize that staying alive is never by our power or might then we know that all we have to do in life is to thank God for his mercy and grace over us.

Many times we get unexpected things from people as surprises and this might be because we have deserved it or might just be out of choice. But many times surprises come because of something we deserve.

I have gotten a lot of surprises right from childhood till my days as an adult. There are a lot of them but out of them all I have forgotten a lot and there are some that remain unforgettable as they stick in my brain and I continue to reminisce about them from time to time.

My story.

In 2012 when I was out of secondary school, I sat for my entrance examination (West African examination council) and was awaiting my results.

It was the first time I had to leave home and stay on my own. But still got catered for by my parents. Just that I was not home with them and I had to spend wisely and also act wisely.

So many words of advice on this night before I left. African parents could be good at that. I was seated in the middle of both parents and received the words of my life that very night. I was told a lot of do's and don’t. To focus on my exams and not after any other thing.

I cared less about what they were saying. All I was happy about was that I am going to leave home, no matter the number of words they say it won’t stop me from leaving home the next day. I couldn’t sleep overnight and was thinking about what my days away from home would look like.

Mum was a little concerned about how I would cope with other students being my first time out of the home. I tried to make her confide in me. But still, I could feel it in her look.

She asked dad about how they would reach out to me to know how my papers are going and if maybe I would need anything so I can ask them. Dad was less concerned about me. He said “He is a man, he should know how to find the way out” I was surprised to hear that from him. So at my age, I should start the hustle? 😂. Anyways the joy of leaving home was all on my mind.

Mum suggested I used the principal phone to call them at home. Since I crammed her number and dad’s number. I felt it was okay and I would make sure to keep the connection. She said if they want to reach out to me too they would make a call through the principal's phone. I agreed and deep down in my mind I knew I won’t even call using the principal phone unless I got called from home.

The next morning I was preparing to join other students who are also going for the exams. While I was still packing my luggage dad asked if I was sure I packed all I needed. I assured him I already packed them. He told me to open it so he could see what I packed.

I opened my box and dropped the clothes one after the other for him to see.

Ooooh! Oooh! 😲. Daaaaaaaaad!! I was surprised by what I saw!

It was a brand new phone in its box. Wow! I couldn’t believe my eyes. Dad got me a phone already and he told me to go out there and hustle. I felt he even loved me more. He smiled and walked out of the room. 😂 I went to him to appreciate him. I was overwhelmed with happiness.

Mum's part pitched in. Mum was happy but that won’t stop her from giving her strong advice 😂. She said this phone shouldn’t be a cause of distraction to my exams unless she would seize it from me when I return and I should make sure it keeps it safe when I want to sleep. It wasn’t a big phone then, but I can browse and do other things on the phone. It was the first phone I used.

Mum escorted me to the park and made sure the bus kicked off in her presence. I knew I would miss home but my adventure was all on my mind. When I got to the examination center. I was the only one with a new phone and a cool one with a camera. I became a celebrity among other students because they will always want to use my phone to take pictures and upload them on their Facebook accounts.

Image is mine

Here is a picture I could retrieve using the phone camera then.

I am so grateful to my parents. And I am using this medium to appreciate them and every other parent for their unending love and support shown towards their children. Thanks so much and God bless.

That was indeed a beautiful surprise from your dad, and even more so the way he watched you discover it in your bags. Your tale was relatable and nicely told. Leaving home for the first time to go off to college is one of the most memorable things.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
