Over $60 for a fairly used bicycle?

Today I was opportune to visit a bicycle store. As I detailed in my post about getting a new bicycle or a fairly used one some weeks ago. I realized I would need to know the price of the bicycle I was going for. I knew the new ones would be so costly compared to the used ones. But I can't say exactly what the price range will be.

After meeting with a bicycle repairer in my area to inquire about which is best to opt for, he suggested I go for the fairly used one since we have a bad road here. And if well maintained then I will have a little or no problem riding the bicycle.

It's been years now since our last bicycle got damaged and I pedaled a bicycle. So since I would be heading to the marketplace today I decided to check on a bicycle store closer to us. When I got there they had no new bicycles but just used ones. Then I asked for the prices.

I hoped to ask for the price of a BMX, but among all of the mini bicycles I saw there they didn't have it. I asked the storekeeper about BMX and he said that it was just too costly to buy and market. The last time they bought one it took a long time before someone could come and buy it.

Then I asked about the price of getting the mini bicycles. She told me that the smaller ones are going for $30 when the ones a little bigger are $38. Then I knew if I should be going for the sizes I can ride I should expect to buy it at a double price.

Among all of the bikes, I saw one I liked but when that's the wine color bicycle. I liked it because of its slim tire and the backpack attached to it. At least if I am going somewhere then I can lock my bags there and ride freely.

I like it but one drawback I realized about the bicycle was the absence of suspension. It has no suspension. This means it is only cool to ride on tarred roads and not in bumpy areas. Our roads are so bumpy. So that won't work fine because the bicycle will damage faster.

I got my eyes on another bicycle. I love the spec on this one and it looked cooler. Though it’s not with a flat tire instead the tire was way bigger and has a lot of grip on it. I checked the suspension and that was awesome. The seat has a different suspension, and the handlebar has a different one too.

It has two types of brakes. And this is what I have been looking for on a new bicycle I will be buying.
The disk brakes. This type of brake lasts longer than the anchor brakes. This is because the brake pads grip the disk and stop the bicycle with a stronger friction compared to the anchor brakes that will just grip on the wheel rims causing the brake pads to wipe off quickly.

I asked for the price of both bicycles to know which I could opt for, and she told me the one without suspension goes for $60 at its last price, and the mountain bike I picked next goes for $65.

Oooh. That was a little costly for a used bike. I was budgeting an amount of $40 even at the highest cost price. But now it's just way above my budget.

I would love to get the bicycle with disc brakes as soon as I gather enough funds to buy it. Then I can ride freely from my home to the farm and back home again. Though I will still outsource for more bicycle stores and get more inquiries about the price and the specs of other bicycles.

Cool. You have to factor in the maintenance cost. Suspension and disk brakes are harder to service than a simple rigid bike.

Oooh that’s true though. I never thought of that. Will put that into consideration for sure. Maybe I will later opt for the rigid one

That's really high for a bicycle. I really don't blame them though, its the situation we find ourself in Nigeria. Everything is just increasing unescessarily. Like they would always say, yesterday's price is not today's price neither is today's price, tomorrow's price.

It's well..

We will survive

It so sad to hear. But we just have to keep finding a means to survive. We can’t stop spending, we should just keep praying our earnings doesn’t stop

The high prices has gone round every goods and services in Nigeria. I'll not be surprised to see a bicycle at that high amount. I believe our leaders should lead well.

Buying a bicycle can be a quite an expenditure indeed. But you can also see it as an investment. In the long run a bicycle can save you money. By not taking the car or public transport for shorter distances you can save money in the long run.
And it is even better for your health too; another plus!

Sometimes it is better to save up some more so you can buy the bicycle you really want instead of a cheaper one.

Good luck with your choices!
