The Only Home We Have

avatar

A hardworking farmer works on his farm from morning till evening. Even in dry seasons, he finds ways and means to transport water over miles just for irrigation. Eventually, his farm begins to flourish. The carrots, so orange and bold. The potatoes, so strong and huge. He comes back on the harvest day in anticipation to go home with a full basket of produce only to come and meet an already harvested land and a destroyed farm. How? He waits days upon days expecting the culprit to return his produce or at least remake his farm for him but nobody shows up. How fair is this?

Well, if you said it’s unfair, then let me break the news to you that you and I are the “culprits”, the farm is our natural resources especially vegetation, and the farmer is the environment. Fortunately for us, the environment finds a way to regenerate and clean itself but we still find ways to destroy it. You remember that time you littered? dumped refuse in a bush?, cut trees from your compound to replace them with pavement blocks? That was you destroying the famer’s farm. How fair is this?

People see matters concerning the environment very abstract but it’s as simple as this, we want a healthy earth right? Just live right, environmentally.
I just remembered how bitter people have been complaining of heat which is kind of funny to me but let’s do some basic calculations. Plants are supposed to act as carbon sink for the carbon dioxide we exhale right? So as we’ve been cutting these carbon sinks, where else do we expect those gases to go?

In African countries, the number one thing that makes it hard to fight for environmental conservation is poverty. There’s nothing wrong in utilizing our resources after all that’s the whole point of having natural resources but then since the poverty rate is too high, we tend to be overdependent on these resources and over exploitation happens. You might be wondering okay , so what now?

That’s where education and sensitization is needed. People already know how much the environment means to all of us, they just sometimes choose not to care about how their actions affect the environment because after all they will die. Alright, but then don’t forget until you die, you’ll still be on this same earth and so will your generations.People need to be reminded countlessly how important the environment is to us and the fact that it’s the only home we have. They need to be educated on how to utilize these resources without compromising the needs of future generations.

So if it’s a tree you’re cutting, make sure you replant it and that’s all. There’s still a long journey ahead of us in combating environmental issues but collectively we can still reach our destination. You can just practice the The Three Rs; Reduce, Reuse, Recyle. Instead of buying A/C you could just plant a tree in your compound. Instead of dumping refuse into bushes and water bodies, you could send it to the appropriate refuse centers.

It’s really that simple. Don’t forget we have only one earth, once it is destroyed we’re equally doomed.

I was enjoying the curiosity the beginning of the story sparked in me until guilty conscience struck me. We need great education on how to maintain our environment and let nature be kind to us.

Well said and you're right, it really is as simple as that and it doesn't matter if you're rich or poor or what country you come from, it is just plain commonsense that you don't dump rubbish anywhere and everywhere.

People over here in Australia still don't believe in climate change or global warming because they don't understand the science, but it really is simple.

I tell them imagine if you were sitting in your living room and your wood burning fire had no chimney to let the smoke up and out, there were no windows or doors.

The smoke will go through the entire room. The room will get hot and bacteria will start growing everywhere. This is climate change- in your own home and that is global warming-in your own home.

Some times you've got to make it soo simple for the simpletons and the ignorant and arrogant to understand.

Wow, this is the nicest explanation I’ve seen about climate change in a while now
Allow me to have this for myself 😂

Oh yes, please do!

Share it everywhere so people will understand because the earth is in a bubble with the ozone layer protecting us from the sun, so our living rooms are like the earth when there's no doors or windows to let the smoke out.

We need to learn and practice what we've learnt, our world is suffering and it's even more painful because sometimes we don't even see anything wrong with it.

Those images are beautiful by the way 🥰

That’s where the pain is, not seeing anything wrong with it.

Thank you🥰

There has never been a more crucial time to take care of the earth than now. Earth is our home, theirs no other place we can go.

It's unfortunate that people, especially in Africa, aren't conscious about how our actions or inactions adversely affect the environment. We have to do better.

This is a very educative article ✅

Everyone knows these things, but it seems we are all expecting someone else to do it on our behalf.
We had about 10 trees in our compound growing up and now we have just one. And I don’t think anyone can give a tangible reason why

I remember we used to have two huge coconut trees in our house and they had so much juicy coconuts for us all. Then my dad decided to cut one down because he said the tree was growing too big.😂

Long story short. Now we have a mango tree , a plantain tree and even some herbs because the house started to feel empty.😂😂

The solutions you propose, like practicing the 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), embracing eco-friendly alternatives, proper waste disposal, and replanting trees, are simple yet powerful steps we can all take. You've made a strong case for why collective action is crucial since the environment is our collective home that we must safeguard.

Earth is our only home, us humans. Now, we feel drastic change in the weather in different parts of the world. We only harvest what we reap. When you think about it, the future, next generation will experience the hardest result of our lack of care to earth

Please help me remind them that we have only one earth o. We cannot go around cutting trees and not expect heat.

The part where u said "what makes it hard for environmental conservation is poverty" yeah your are right.
Also ignorance can be added to the list and thank u for proffering a solution which I think we should all utilize

That is a very beautiful storyline to drive home your point.

We all have a role to play in protecting our earth. And sanitizing people about the right way to go about it is a great start.

I totally agree with you, we're all culprits who have destroyed and catered away the farmer's crops, though through littering the environment with refuse, cutting down trees and other activities which harms the earth forgetting that it has the power to fight back and cause us pains too.

I never saw this coming that we are the culprits.

It is such a joy to read your posts.

Wow! I agree with you on this. We only have one Earth, which is our only home. We need to be ready to make our environment livable and breathable.

Thank you so much for sharing this.
