A Friend's 40th Birthday - Zoom and Poker Stars

(Edited)

Last night I took part in a virtual birthday gathering for one of my home town friend's 40th.

As we are now almost 3 weeks locked down, with no end in sight, the only option to 'meet' at present is somewhere online.

The original plan for the birthday was a weekend in Marbella, Spain, but that had to be cancelled and is now booked for April 2021 - my mate says he's not turning 40 until that holiday arrives.

As you can see, I didn't get the memo for the dodgy shirts, or maybe I did and don't own one :) Most of the guys featured below went to Las Vegas last year for 40th celebrations and many of the shirts on show were bought specifically for the event.

Unfortunately, Poker Stars wouldn't let me play after accepting my deposit. I vaguely remember signing up many years ago and probably took advantage of their generous deposit bonus offers only to end up being banned from the site :)

The guy in the green shirt, is vastly more experienced as a poker player and unsurprisingly took the tournament, beating his brother (guess who!) in the head to head.

Zoom actually worked really well and only kicked us out after 3 hours where it took 2 minutes to create another meeting. This is when the birthday boy got rapidly drunk due to his wife bringing shots on the demands of the other guys :)

Not the same but better than nothing at all, and for me, being the only one without others in the house, a good chance to feel social while keeping safe distance.

Today, as has been the case for the majority of the week, the weather here is pretty decent for the time of year. I have promised myself I will venture out (not just to the store and back) for a run/jog/walk to collect some sunshine and test my knee out.

Three weeks of daily exercise has made my left knee sore and is likely due to the fact much of the routines involve a fair amount of jumping. I've spent much of the past 4/5 years on the bike, and I think this new regime has come as a bit of a shock to my legs.

It's the inside of the knee that is sore to tap, and I think it is the medial collateral ligament causing the pain. 6/7 years ago I took a knee to the outside of the knee and this put me out of footballing action for months. Back then I rehabilitated using the elliptical trainer, but sadly do not have access to one of those at present.

I'm hoping that a jog wont cause further damage, and switching up the routines to remove impact will help. I hate having the motivation to exercise, but not being able to do what I want.

Anyway, time to venture outside. Enjoy your weekends,

Asher

I really like how everyone is getting inventive with this whole lockdown malarkey. And it's sunny, woot woot!! Enjoy outside!

Really nice outside, wish I had a garden but the jog-walk did the trick. My knees though!

We'll probably all come out of this wondering what the point of meeting face to face actually is.

And your friend bottom right has one awesome 'tache, do pass on my regards!

Come to think of it I wonder if Second Life is enjoying a renaissance, remember that?!?

Businesses will definitely be re-thinking office space - some friends have told me their departments have been more productive these past few weeks.

Ahh, the covid-19 tache, I asked if it was fake. His wife passed by and was asked what she thought of it, 'fucking ridiculous' :D

I do remember Second Life, considering how cheap bitcoin was back then, i'm chalking up creating virtual whatevers to sell for BTC as yet another miss!

Not being able to participate in the game, luckily didn't result in a dull evening so it seems, looking at the size of that bottle (2nd pic) you're holding ...

It was a bit annoying seeing as they let me deposit but not play!

I had 3 of those bottles (660ml) and a few cans - feeling a bit fuzzy this morning but back on track now :)

Fuzzy!? hahaha.
A bit out of shape maybe ...
Practice makes perfect man.

I've been slacking on my beer practice on purpose, trying to get into shape for the summer, that potentially never happened.

Hey Asher ☀️
I am glad to hear you had a virtual birthday with your friends. I really feel for ppl who live solo and are forced into isolation. You're a brave guy with a lot of fortitude to be powering through this. I find that being alone by choice is one thing. Forced-isolation imo is entirely different.

I am sorry to hear your knee is bugging you. I can empathize to the moon an back. Getting back in shape after multiple physical & mental trauma when turning 40 is so difficult on so many levels it's incredible!!! My trainers and therapists say the turtle wins. And, even then, wow. Just have to never ever give up and continue pushing for improvement!! It's nice you have more time and attention for the blockchain. Lucky us!! ❤🦋🎶

Thanks Jill :)

Yes I'm OK being alone most of the time, but that's with the option to go out if I wish.

I can see the turtle winning the race more often these days - not really much of a choice past 40 is there?! The improvement is visible, but I'll have to go a little more carefully - my knee was not happy with the jog and it quickly turned into a walk. Yoga in 30 minutes though, I'm hoping that helps.

Take care and thank you for the message!

Sup @abh12345, it's been a cracker of a day here, actually it's been a great week. I think I will have a nice base tan for the summer. At least with the lockdown we have nice weather to enjoy.

I have done a few social zooms too, although not a birthday party yet. I ran two here with Hive peeps that were way cool. You might pop in and say hi next time. I have been missing our chats

The Irish tan? Well that's news to me :P

Glad you've had a sunny week, it's been pretty good here although I don't really see it from my balcony. Planning on getting out a bit more now I'm fuloughed.

I saw you'd done one, didn't see the invite prior though sorry :( Thinking of doing one myself, I wonder who'll turn up, if anyone!

You are hilarious Asher - our red tan is known on the Spanish resorts 🤣

If you do a zoom, or other meetup ping me, I will hop in if I can. things can be hard with the kids around 24/7 so there is a good chance I wont see yours either. You will be suprised how well it will be received. we were chatting for two and a half hours the other night. and the first one went over an hour too.
