If all goes to plan, I'll be living in Spain in two weeks 😁

avatar

On the 5th December 2015, I left the UK with 3 suitcases and a mountain bike. With an additional two laptops, on December 5th 2020, I leave the UK again, and this time (bar visits), I'm going to make every attempt to make this the last time I move my life from the island sat under a cloud.

IMG_8795.jpg

Yep, work have finally agreed to let me continue working remotely from overseas and have given a shot at setting myself up as an expat in Spain. When I had the initial discussion, in which I expected a short 'no', my IT director told me that if/when things get back to normal, 'tough shit', I'd be wanted back in the UK. It's been three months since that online meeting and since then, he/the business have had to readjust their thinking as the we have entered a new normal in relation to the world of work.

IMG_5670.JPG

IMG_5643 1.JPG

The business recently lost a number of staff on the same day as they instructed them to spend time in the office. News came through that one of these staff members was now working for the competition, fully remote, and on a far superior wage. Over the phone, the Friday just gone, he told me to book my flight and that if I'm getting the work done and am happy 'there', don't worry about needing to return.

It's all my own making I know, but the last few months have been pretty stressful, and that was an awesome way to finish the week. Thanks boss!

Clearly I'm going to be putting a good shift in (I have room for improvement!) when I move over, just to prove the point that a happy employee, is a more productive employee. There's still much to sort out, both here and when I land, but I just have to tackle everything in as it comes, and hopefully my sleep will improve.

IMG_1160.JPG

IMG_1042.JPG

The latest on that list is that from today (23rd November), all foreigners flying (land-crossings are exempt!?) must have proof of a negative Covid-19 test <72 hours from landing on Spanish soil. Ah well, what's another 150 pounds onto the total, ouch. Hopefully, I can avoid catching the damn thing over the next two weeks, or it's a lot of time/money wasted, and I'll likely not make it there before the new rules come into play at the turn of the year.

I've been fortunate in that a friend has offered to put me up for the first week of December, this is going to save me a stack of cash which will almost cover the flight, taxis, Covid-19 test, and all the other bits that will likely make the 5th December one of the most expensive days ever.

Initially, I'll be receiving my salary into my UK bank account as normal, but at some point this will change as I need to be paying tax in Spain before 183 days are up. The other UK tax, National Insurance, will be the same to start, but I'll need to move that too and my company will also need to be registered. This is unlikely to happen right away and so I'll need private medical cover, which looks like it's only available yearly, at around 600 euros. The medical cover is required to apply for residency, so I think I'll have to bite the bullet on that bill.

Where I'm staying at first, the wired internet offerings are rather crap and so I've paid for 2 months of 4g unlimited. I'm embarrassed to tell you that this cost 140 euros. Feck. Decent internet is essential for my job though and so I'll start with that and hope that a wired connection will be good enough for the following months. I'll be able to test it before the term runs out on the 4g and so fingers-crossed it does the job because 70 euros a month is not cheap.

Ok, enough bitching about costs.

IMG_1134.JPG

If all goes to plan I'll mostly be working, learning to play Padel, practicing Spanish/Keyboard, watching HIVE and crypto fly, and saving for a deposit for an apartment with a sea view. The sea view is optional but who knows, I guess it depends just how big the impending bull market is. The plan is to slice some HIVE off the 130k I have collected over the past 3/4 years and use that as a deposit - $3-4 a pop though and that would cover the purchase, and change my life. We are a long way from there though, and so I'll not get too excited just yet.

10k LEO at the prices I've seen in the Discord ($25/$40) would also do the trick - keep building/shilling/pumping guys!

Other tribe tokens, such as STEM, have woken up of late - 85k of those is looking quite good right now. Also, Splinterlands is ticking over nicely and looks set for action next year - Alpha packs are currently selling at 75 HIVE a go!

Should the stars align, 2021 could be pretty awesome for all involved with Crypto, and Hive.

IMG_5666.JPG

Thank you to those who crossed their fingers following the previous posts, and to those have asked on and off-chain about the potential move to Spain - much appreciated!

Asher

Looks beautiful, live it up if all works out. Hopefully in less than three months we will be anywhere in the world but Suriname that accepts Cambodian citizens and has a cheaper cost of living than the hyperinflation and economic collapse going on here.

If things go well, Ethiopia may be our new home soon. Solving internet issues is definitely a must when scoping out a new place. !tan !BEER

What an awful place to live! LOL

That's amazing dude, I'm happy for you! I have similar plans with my wife but we are looking for a place to buy first before trucking ourselves down to a much warmer state! Markets are a bit wild and there's a lot of housing that's reserved for 55+ folks but it won't deter us from getting there.

A happier employee is by far a more productive employee. That's been proven time and again for many! Our productivity as a group at my company has vastly improved since we were all told to work remotely. I feel for the folks that have to go in still but if you are in the position to work remotely and can do your job from anywhere (in the same timezone roughly for sure) then you should be able to!

It would be nice for the Hive price and other crypto we are holding to make some nice improvements but like you, I'm not relying on that. It would be nice but if it happens, it does and we can see it afterwards.

Terrible I know, can't get a good photo anywhere :)

Thanks! It's really awesome news and I hope I can make it stick. Warm evenings and long days are the future, good luck with your move when it happens.

A happier employee is by far a more productive employee.

Deffo, looking forward to proving this to be the case.

With the job, I won't need to rely on crypto to get some funds saved for a place, but it would help greatly if it went wild next year!

Congrats!! You're off!! I don't know how much longer it will be before my turn.

Not sure about you, but just to be clear in case anyone gets the wrong message, it's not that I don't like UK, I just don't' like the uncertainty and not having options!

Anyway, I'm sure all will turn out find. The most important thing is you got a job.

Not sure about you..... it's not that I don't like UK...

I am not a fan, that's all i'll say for now :)

The job is essential though, unless I miraculously become fluent en Español. Not likely, but i'll be working on it.

Cheers!

First off, Congrats. That is a really cool deal that you get to be 'living the dream'. I'm really happy for you.

Spain could go from 43 degrees N latitude to 37 N latitude. Starlink Internet is available NOW in the US at 44 degrees, with more satellites being added every 3 weeks or so. It shouldn't be too long until you can get Starlink in Spain. The 70 Euros would pay your Starlink bill as it is currently here (I think it's around $90 and $400 for the reciever.) That's for HIGH speed internet.

Even if you live in Gibraltar you are significantly north of me. Maybe in late 2021 for me to get service.

Again, I'm glad you are getting to make this move. The problems are just mostly logistics and you'll figure out a way to work things out. WooHoo I'm happy for you.

Thank you Tom!

Mostly logistics, you are right, and those should just fall into place. I have a habit of worrying, even if there is no point until the time of the event.

Hook me up with some Starlink, that sounds great!

Cheers!

5 years to the day, not a bad thing at all. Glad you job saw the light, and if that first test shows bad just do like Elon Musk and keep getting tested until you get the result you need.

Initial expenses will be steep as you know from past experience, but the medical benefits of less stress and happier you will more than off-set that in the future. Congratulations.

Spooky in a way, but I'm going to take it as a good omen. Same airline too, and they got my bike there in one piece last time.

Haha, right? 150 pounds a pop though, I'm just going to pray!

The initial costs should quickly be offset and I should be able to get my saving boots on. Cheers!

So glad to hear it's worked out for you. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that you'll be on that plane on the 5th. (As in, that nothing untoward happens to prevent it).

Hopefully, this time next year, we'll be at a live Hivefest and you can make us all jealous with stories of the wonderful time you've had in Spain.

Looking forward to a Hive Meet-up to celebrate your purchase of flat with a sea view. it's going to be a busy year! 😂

There is still worry the flight wont take off, or I'll get Covid a few days before - that would be really crap! But otherwise, just got to stay calm I guess and do what I need to do next this next week or so.

Hopefully, this time next year, we'll be at a live Hivefest...

If it's in Europe, I will be there!

I'm planning a quiet start to 2020, getting busier and crazier as it progresses :)

Doesn't that HIVE sell at 9800 Satoshi look good now, it's only just back over 700 Sats!

I was thinking about that when you wrote about crypto going up. I seem to recall it looked pretty good at the time as well! 😁

I need to get my head around this Satoshi business. I'm notorious for getting decimal points in the wrong place. 😂

For example, is 0.00000400 BTC 400 Satoshis?

P.S. Did you see I made the engagement Leaderboard last week? A first on Hive. Bit of a shocker that! 😂

I think you got about .5 BTC for 5000 odd HIVE. It's about 65000 HIVE for the same at present!

It looks shit mate, what the hell would you want to move there!

Well, it's been a long time coming and whilst I know it's been a fairly difficult process and all I'm sure the reward for effort will come by the bucket-load. You still have some boxes to tick of course, but I bet it feels good to finally moving forward and to a destination, and life, that is more commensurate to your needs. Nice work mate.

What I like is that you're taking action. Do something isn't just a nice little motivational catch-phrase, it's really the only option for those wanting more from life, deeper experiences and better value.

They say we gravitate towards what we think about most. In and of itself that's a load of shite...But thinking about something, and applying some action and effort to it, will often have the desired result, or at least move a person closer to the desired result. So, seems like you did that. ✅

You'll get there, I have no doubts! Two weeks and you'll be roasting your buns in Spain. Oh, life! I was surprised they said yes, but, if you don't need to be there, really, what do they care where you live?

From your lips to God's ear, I am waiting on the coin to explode and Hive to roll over. Then, we will all live happily ever after.

You know you better get a revolving visitor's pass for your daughter.

I'm excited for you, Asher. Everything is falling into place nicely. You deserve it.

Sadly there won't be much bun roasting this time of year, but in 4/5 months ill make up for it 😎

Hopefully my Daughter will be visiting soon enough, perhaps when she pops her head up out of her own life - I can wait 🙂

HIVE going mad would be the icing on the cake, fingers-crossed for all of us.

Genuinely made up for you! I really hope it all goes smoothly and this time its for keeps. AS your Christmas gift this year, you'll be getting a new bike lock ;-)

Double check about the Covid test requirements. If its anything like trying to get back to Thailand, they require a specific RT-PCR type and additionally a separately issued Fir to fly certificate. If you need any info, there are a multitude of FB groups from UK folks travelling abroad. Just check carefully.

Again, best wishes to you fella.

haha thanks mate!

I bought a lock with the bike at 1/5 of the cost and I hope it will do the job. I'll take it out less too I think - not for trips to the pub!

Pretty sure I've got the right test booked - a PCR swab. Private centres are making a killing here advertising it as a safe to fly deal whilst the NHS refuse to do them for the travellers.

Ah well, I think I'm set now and just need the plan to execute, cheers!
