Photos from Ronda, Spain

(Edited)

I'm currently enjoying a holiday in Spain and recently had the chance to visit Ronda, the third most visited destination in southern part of the country. source

IMG_2766.JPG

The village is situated above a deep gorge that is spanned by a stone bridge that separates the old town from the 15th century 'new' town.

Puente Nuevo, Ronda's 'new bridge' was completed in 1793 after 40 years in construction. It spans the 98m Tajo gorge and took the lives of the 50 builders source

Ronda is considered the home of modern bullfighting and has a rich cultural and literary tradition. source

Ronda is indeed one of those places which stands alone. I know nothing to which it can be compared. Lady Tenison, 1850.

My photos don't really do the place any justice at all, and so here's a video to make up for this.

Holidaying during these unprecedented times is interesting. There are many people wearing masks in the street and it is compulsory to wear a mask when entering a building, even if it's just to visit a restaurant toilet. The positive for tourists is that many places are much quieter than they would be this time of year, as stated by my guide, @sulayr.

I am now half way through my trip, which has involved some time at the beach (mostly hiding under an umbrella or in the sea), a couple of games of Padel, and visits to other nearby towns. I've also been trying to keep up with the exercise and last night completed a 7 km run along the huge beach here in El Puerto de Santa Maria.

Today is another hot one and the plan is to find some indoor entertainment (like Pool and Table-tennis), after I have watched @sulayr's Padel coach put her through her paces. It's me who needs the lessons really, and I shall be watching closely for tips.

OK, have a lovely day all, catch you later.

Asher

Those pics bring back some very happy memories. Glad you're having a good time! 😊

I'll be hitting the beach myself this afternoon, once I've finished up some work. It's unlikely I'll be braving the sea though!

Glad to hear it!

The sea is a bit chilly here, compared to the Med at least - likely to be a few degrees warmer than round your way though!

Have a nice day Gillian 😎

Some impressive work here, had me thinking ‘why?’ Bunch of show-offs these engineers of old.

Cheers mate, will do 😎

Those old engineers just like rubbing it our faces about how good they were...And here's us these days that can't fix a pot hole in the road with any real skill!

I was wondering? Is it that it wasn't really sunny or the weather conditions didn't really light up the images? Anyway thanks for the video, it by far complimented the Images. This is of course a really iconic place.

There are many people wearing masks in the street and it is compulsory to wear a mask when entering a building

Lol where's your mask then?

It was patchy on the sunshine front and the clouds were appreciated, even if it meant the sun didn’t light up the shots.

I wear the mask only when it is required - there is plenty of space when walking around.

Awesome pictures man, that place does look beautiful! I’m glad you’re getting away and enjoying some time in such a place. Keeping up with running is great, especially along a beach!

Running along damp sand feels great, my calves feel fine today compared to the run a week ago on pavement.

Yeah I've felt that! I would try to do trail running when I could. Pavement is ok but it hurts!

I've been there and it is spectacular. Just building houses on the edge of the cliff had to be dangerous.

A popular place for the tourists I hear, and yes, a dangerous task with many lives lost according to what I have read.

There must be something about the local mentality as people would risk their lives against the bulls too. The roads around there can be hairy too. I know we got overtaken by a few locals on the twisty bits.

Too right - being chased down the street by bulls is not my idea of entertainment. My driver knows the roads, I would not like to drive them!

That's an awe inspiring bridge and a rather stunning long town to boot! I can imagine it must attract quite the tourism. Any idea which side is considered the "old" side behind you in the photo?

Pretty epic work by those involved. It’s tough to say which is the old town without checking as I think both sides have had new buildings added. I’d guess over my left shoulder, we walked around some ruins and a courtyard on that side.

I don’t usually like larger cities all clump up together like that. That is however beautiful and it looks like they take a lot of pride in maintaining it.

What people won't do to live at great heights with beatiful views Ash.
Seems like you are enjoying it and head for the roofs of those high houses when the bulls are running in the streets.
You never know if one big and crazy bulls has the number of your shorts on his mind hahaha.

I think the news headlines will be interesting lol.
Something like "Man flies over gorge au natural" lol.

Best of things to you and enjoy!

Ronda has a bull arena and history of these huge animals running in the street. We could do with a few bulls closer to home!

I've just watched a video of a guy jumping off the bridge with an 'open parachute', crazy!

0

Hahaha, I can imagine people running for fear of their lives from the bulls closer at home.

You been bungy jumping ever? That bridge is ideal for a bungy to swing through those huge columns.

What is the virus situation there? Are you safe?

Cheers and enjoy!

I have done a bungy jump in New Zealand a long time ago, and it was off a bridge traversing a glacier river - an exhilarating experience for sure!

From tomorrow, the masks are compulsory again in public. It seems a second wave is the concern, and it's going to be a bit frustrating to have to wear one at the beach.

Cheers :)

You have to do what you have to.
We also wear masks on the beach whenever there are people around, but mostly we visit isolated parts of the beach where there's a lot of rocks.
Most people here like the white sand beaches, but not the rocky ones, so we slip the masks off when we are alone.

So find yerself a rocky beach son, unless you want to watch the "nature" on the beach hahaha!

I've been to Ronda in March 2018, for a handful of days, only weeks before I arrived in Portugal ( my current home ).

It sure is a city that can't be compared to any other town that I've ever visited but - back then - it felt a little too touristy to me ( even the bars I went to were pretty disappointing food wise ). I lived in Spain for some months in 2007 and 2009 so I can definitely judge Spanish food .

I guess the virus also has its upside, less tourists ;<)

Disfruta tu tiempo en España!

Saludos,

Vincent

Cool :)

Yes the plus side right now is the lack of tourists, but I guess these places are not the best for food. We ate in a town close by called Setenil de las Bodegas and the salad and swordfish were spot on.

Muchas gracias!

Beautiful pictures and video.
This is actually quite interesting for me. I've been mentioning the town of Ronda in Cebu, Philippines a few times recently as it is where my business is located and one of the legends I heard about the town is that it got its third and current name from the Spanish conquistadors because of the similarities with the town of Ronda in Spain. (source)
I had never bothered to look it up but after seeing your pictures and video, I'd say that is a legend only. There doesn't appear to be anything in common between the 2.
Thank you for sharing.

Interesting, thanks for the comment :)

So, no Gorge or Bullfighting arena in the town of Ronda, Cebu?

0
0
0.000
avatar

Haha... no, none of that at all. It's a very simple and small town on the seashore and with access to small mountains in the background. The only arena you'd find is the cockpit for cockfights and that's pretty small.

In the UK there are many towns 'paired' with cities from around Europe, I have never worked out why or if there is a reason for these connections and think not :)

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yes, these are paired cities or twin cities as they're called in France, and that's just a way to promote themselves in other countries. In the case of Ronda it dates a few centuries and I always thought it was because of the legend mentioned above. Seems like it is a legend or rumor afterall. The mayor and his councillors couldn't tell me the real story behind the name. Not that it matters much anyways.
Enjoy your vacation for sure ☺

Wow... what a blast from the past! I visited Ronda when I was about 8 years old on a holiday where we stayed in a little hotel in the mountains called mollino del santos. I remember that bridge over the gorge vividly, and the picture of the tree lined path is sparking memories of trying to get a ninja picture of my mum as she hates having her picture taken. Was that pic taken in a park by any chance?

Looks nice and sunny man! Enjoy the hols Asher :)
