The Furlough Life

avatar

It is now three months since I was put on Furlough, where has the time gone and what have been doing?

First though, what I haven't been doing enough of is posting on Hive. You would think that with less cash coming in and most days being completely free, I would be putting this wonderful 2nd income opportunity to work and adding at least one piece of content to the chain each day.

However, with only 13 posts so far this month, that has not been the case and I guess my only real excuse is that I can overthink stuff and spend far to much time wondering if what I am adding here is adding any value or not. I go between thinking hardly any content adds value, to almost all content adds value in some way, but the former usually wins out in my mind.

So today I just thought screw it, I've got photos and screenshots of my bike rides and some of the beer I've been drinking - and seeing as that I've mostly spent the last three months exercising and drinking beer, and excising a bit more, this will have to be my content for the time being.

Come nearer Lamas, my phone cant make you out over there....

The three photos above could have been taking on pretty much any of the bike rides I've been on of late, I feel lucky and much happier when the sun is shining and so far this year, the weather has not disappointed at all.

NDZP5097.JPG

Today was another cracker, with more sun scheduled this week, and having already done 30 mins on the Elliptical this morning, I visited the local park with one of my friends (above). One daytime beer is enough when you have further exercise scheduled in later in the day, and I've just finished a legs/ass routine, with an ab workout following that.

I had just started working out again at the beginning of the year, but Furlough (and the time it has allowed) has given me the chance to put more effort into training, with the end goal being ripped and drunk on the Spanish coast :P

IMG_2622.PNG

IMG_2624.PNG

Since getting the Amazfit Sports Watch and the new bike, I've been totally hooked on collecting PAI and tracking my exercise, and I wish I had something like this 20 odd years ago when I started working out as a late teen. Back then, the only heart rate notifications I had was a pain in my chest after hammering the Elliptical machine for 20 minutes flat out - that was the clue to slow down a little.

I've noticed with the watch, be it running, cycling (up-hill), or during an Elliptical workout, that I can go steadily at 155-160 BPM without over-doing it and needing a break. If I work harder and BPM goes to 160+ (VO MAX for me), I can only keep that effort going for a couple of minutes before needing to ease off and catch my breath.

The 160+ BPM range is the sweet spot though for obtaining PAI, and so they are tough to earn if you are trying to keep a certain pace. I've noticed that interval work (go hard then rest) seems to collect PAI more efficiently - I can push to 165-170 for a minute, then ease of and rest until BPM drops to 155-160, and repeat. Still, it's tough, and when your workout partner collects 50 PAI for an hours sport, a bit frustrating. I will admit it, I have PAI envy, and the gamification has got me bad.

Anyway, enough exercise chat, what about the beer!?

IMG_2424.JPG

I signed up again for a monthly beer delivery, and the above are the most recent arrivals. They didn't last long, and I got a little forgetful on taking an 'in glass' photo of each, but here are some lovely beer photos for you....

Yum!

I'm at the point now where I don't really want Furlough to end, but understand that my employer may want me back working, at least once the Government stop setting money on fire / aiding the completely broken economy.

Until then though, I shall be riding my bike in the sunshine, and reading about what people are up to on Hive, likely with a cold beer in hand.

Cheers!

Asher

Ohhh, I passed 90000 Hive Power today - collecting HP should go on my Furlough CV too I guess :)

Exercise and beer, top notch. What was the pepper spray I've, was it spicy? Moahr posts!! That's what I say, value is in the eyes of the beholders!!

Yeah, quit moaning and post moar!

The pepper spray was a bit disappointing to be honest - I wanted more spice but it was a bit weak overall. I've gone for 10 light ones this month after mixing it up in the past, hopefully the sunshine will hold so I can get some sunk outdoors!

It's meant to go mental hot this weekend!! Much time for outdoor sinking!

I have had loads of pales. I do love them in the sun! All I need to do now is get that bike through my works bike scheme and get riding!

Down here I think we peak Thursday, which would be typical of working life and bring on a trail of expletives - but as I'm doing fuck all on Thursday, that'll do!

I looked at the cycle to work scheme and in the end thought screw it - if you plan to be where you are for another year though, it is likely the best option.

I'm wondering how you could potentially speed the process up - do the bare minimum each day from now on, or is that already the case?! :)

There is a fine art to doing the bare minimum whilst looking incredibly valued and busy I find ;0)

One day it might happen, it might not and I might end up being forced out by years of no pay rises!

It is a fine art, my game is quite good I must say!

No pay rises, I think you should tell them where to shove it on tomorrows conference call, whilst you take the laptop to the bathroom and proudly curl out your bosses I'm leaving you present!

Hmm, perhaps not, I should crack a beer open so I have an excuse for writing the above :D

Haha, you do have a point. They come up with loads of nonsense to make us think we are getting something, the worst thing is, this year was meant to be a decent rise but I think covid and recession might have our paid to that. Looks like the toilet on conference call for me maybe. Lol!!

Hello dear friend @ abh12345 Good afternoon.
I think we all contribute something of value to our social network, there is always someone who likes what you do or share.

I think it is not bad to use free time to exercise on a bike and try different beers.

I always say that even from bad situations you can get something positive. Exercise is not bad at all and some beers are always very good.
Happy week dear friend

Do Garmin link with PAI?

Sounds like it's crying out to be tokenised!

0

A quick google makes me think the answer is no, and that people are awaiting this feature. Apple and Fitbit gear does, and so I suspect it wont be long.

Sounds like it's crying out to be tokenised!

Totally. You can attach a step counter to a dog, a little trickier to capture heart rate :)

0

I can't imagine Garmin will be far behind. It's just a matter of linking already existing data to the game!

I quite like the concept, never heard of it before.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yeah I like the PAI idea, although the heart rate ratios light/med/intensive to earn PAI seem to be set the same for me and @sulayr. She's a few years younger and her BPM can seemingly go higher.

Not sure if age should be factored in more, or maybe I'm just looking for excuses :)

0
0
0.000
avatar

Making it the same as the age gradings for running would be a good way to work it.

0

Makes more sense I think. Otherwise trying to hit the weekly PAI total is not going to beneficial to an older persons health!

0

Does drinking collect PAI?

I have to admit, I miss the PAI count with the new watch...

0

0.000

Only if I have to run to the shop before it shuts.

I thought PAI was the common indicator but it seems not. Hopefully they and Garmin will add some PAI soon.

I was made redundant just as this all kicked off so have been living the retired life since early March. Putting the financial worries aside, the novelty has been wearing off. I was using my static bike to start off with but cancelled my iFit subscription and lost interest; I started again today. Being a fat sensible kind of guy I started with the final part of an uphill program. Just tried to get up to get a drink ... I don’t think I’ll bother.

Redundant due to Covid?

I'd like a static bike with the funky courses you can do these days, but that's beyond my budget. Good that you've got back into the saddle again, but yeah, perhaps save the beer for tomorrow which sounds like it could be a rest day. Cheers!

Unfortunately not down to Covid so I couldn't be furloughed. My last day was a few weeks before lockdown started.

I ended up going for a cheaper "normal" bike that is (almost) compatible with the digital courses. It's OK but not great. It seems to get confused over what's up/downhill. Now wish I'd spent a little more and got the the spinning style bike which changes gradient as well as resistance.

The standard bike doesn't really make it possible to get out the saddle.

everything looks good, beer, watch, cycling.

I took the day off work and went for a bike ride. My tire blew and I didn't have a repair kit (I had a pulp but the hole was too large), I had to push my bike about 3km to the nearest shop cause I was in a really inconvenient place. Normally I have a kit, but I planned to stay near the city. The city run shops are all closed because meh....government doesn't care.

I'm at the point now where I don't really want Furlough to end

I'm not on furlough, but have a reduced week by one day and am working from home. I'll be honest, I don't really want that to end. I can do my job from home so there's really little reason for me to be in the office every day. I have meetings with my team and all of course, and have to see clients...But working fro home suits me. That's COVID, I'm ruined...Or, thanks COVID, you helped demonstrate why I don't have to go to the office. Lol.

At least you're getting some beer drinking and biking in Asher...That's what's important. Oh, and well done on the 90, only 10 to go and then...You'll want 120. Lol.

0
0
0.000
avatar

It's a good deal!

And yeah, I'd like now to be working from home a couple of days a week - hopefully businesses will see they can work with more remote employees. Could be a bad few years for office lettings?

Beer and cycling have been keeping me sane, I try to do a bit of both each day.

well done on the 90, only 10 to go and then...You'll want 120. Lol.

hmm, probably, but 100k will be nice. I could get even slacker on post output at that point.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Slacker on post output? So minus 2 posts per week? Lol.

Commercial office-space property owners will see a big decline in occupancy, and therefore income. Lack of quality leases will devalue the property itself as value of commercial premises is dependent on tenancy, tenure and lease terms. It is a bad situation all around. It will see a rise in serviced offices though, but not enough to compensate. Rising taxes, insurance and utilities will break many landlords who will hit the sale market. A glut of commercial properties will reduce sale prices and loans will default and so the decline goes. There's no real positives to be found really. That's why I keep saying the pain of COVID is yet to be seen. The same things will happen in residential leasing.

We've talked about this before, the state of mind of a person in this
COVID scenario. People like you and I dealing with it I mean. It's critical to stay connected to others, to exercise and not to get fucking pissed every day at 11am. 😂 (Or eat too many snacks.)

You have a good balance, and a few knuckleheads around to lean on when you need. It's a support network that I hope all have. Asking if someone is OK is more important now than ever.

So 100K will be sweet. I wish I could get there but it would mean dropping BTC and I'm not willing to do so. I'll have to blog for it. Sheesh, that's a lot of blogging!

I forgot property was your thing, glad I mentioned it. A pretty depressing outlook in the short term.

I'm actually doing pretty well here, especially with knuckleheads around. Although, if you'd have gone for 1pm it may have been a different story :P

100K will be sweet....that's a lot of blogging!

Yeah, the property thing is a day to day thing for me...It's incredible what I'm seeing. There will be suicides, no doubt. It's a shame that someone would do so over money, but just because people appear rich it doesn't mean they own the money. People will take the easy option, and check out.

Lol well, I'm 3/4 the way through that merlot I pictured on Discord now...The last 1/4 won't last long . I won't post tonight...Who knows what I may write! ...Maybe I should, could be a laugh.

Thanks :) They were taken at the top of a steady rise without much of a view, and on this occasion I thought I deserved a rest and to enjoy the view.

Me gustaría probar todas esas cervezas jajaja. Excelente publicación, lo importante es siempre hacer algo, y no quedarse quieto. El ejercicio ayuda mucho, y te cambia el animo, o por lo menos a mi.Saludos!

Ash, I am reading this quite late. As you know very well that is sort of normal for me. So my apology first (hey that's a very brit thing... start with a sorry.. eh?)

I consider you almost my family by now and believe it or lot you name comes up around our "dinner table" quite often. Quotation because, we rarely have sat down as a family around a table.... mostly it is running around the house with food ... tantrum... and then some eating... more tantrum... and then may be peppa pig on iPad along with some food.. while the parents standing around the kitchen counter eating a bite or two with lots of lots of beer or hard stuff :)

But the point is we discuss you. I always wonder the grass is greener on the other side... right? We talk about you nonetheless. Looking at your furlough life.. we discuss do both of us need to work any longer? The answer is simple and it is the answer to the age old question... are we financially independent? This is a very personal question... and instead of answering it head on with figures and numbers (as we should) your learned friend (yours truly) dance around the question :) Yep... I confess. I do dance around the question. I am not sure what it means. I blame because we have young kids... but that is mostly a lie. I think it is a state of mind mostly. But now is the time to think about it... don't you agree?..

No need to apologise for a 'late' comment, I have enough notifications set to help me keep up :)

Thank you for the kind comment, I never expected to be discussed offline but I'm glad I entered your thoughts and in relation to a potentially large change in life - and an excellent step I think too!

Enjoy your vacation, I look forward to hearing your thoughts after a break from work and the screens :)

Congratulations on 90k HP.:) that Take Up Space beer is so dark, looks like something form Jägermeister or a fancy cocktail tbh. Not so appealing though. It tastes good I hope.

Cheers!

I like all the beers, even the dark Jägermeister looking ones :) The latest delivery contains all lighter beers, much better for the summer months.

What would i not give for a beer right now.. Its 33 in celcius here with a warm breeze outside but cant even manage a lite beer. Cause its illeagal. :(

Even after liqur being contraband, I had ways to get my hands on JD's or Black Devil( cheap local ones--__---) but covid has beaten me here too...Pathetic.

Bangladesh. (--__--)... A country too comfortable for sober and lazy simps. We do have some perks thats quite unique culturally but socially its quite morbid here

Life would be tough without a cold beer now and again. What about Marijuana? Is that one of the perks? :)

You are freakishly sharp Asher. Its kinda scary, LOL.

And again. What you do not have in liquid, you make it up in solids XDXD

Firstly, after reading your post, it makes me think about am I writing something valuable or not?.
Secondly, No PAI Man. Because I am still waiting for my watch "Amazfit Bip" which is a gift from my teacher. He was supposed to visit my country this year but because of the Coronavirus it is impossible now.
Congratulations for your 90k, Man! Hopefully it will cross 100k soon..Cheers!

It's a tough one, but I think the general advice is don't let it put you off posting, and that pretty much all content has some merit.

That's a shame about the watch and the visit from your teacher, I really hope that we've seen the worst of coronavirus and that things can slowly return to normal.

100k would be a huge milestone, I will try for it this year! Thanks!

I am more focusing on how I can improvise myself. Hopefully, I will resolve this soon. It's very important that people not only read our article but also learn something.

And, about 100k? We will surely be going to celebrate soon for your 100k with some beers.😊

once the Government stops setting money on fire / aiding the completely broken economy.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen. Setting money on fire is the raison d’être of 21st Century central banking.

Lol the life of the unemployed.......and what a paradox - work out and then drink beer.

As for 90 000 HP, I can't even imagine heights like that here in my third world existence.

I am still employed, just not working - crazy times we live in.

... what a paradox - work out and then drink beer.

Burning the candle at both ends, my mum warned me but I've yet to listen :)

I never expected to be looking at 100k HP, it's quite insane when I compare to the rest of my assets (not a lot else at all!).

PAIs NOT pies? Ah shit... I got this whole thing messed up!

Yup! This whole furlough thing has messed with a lot of people's rhythm in a lot of different ways. I was lucky or unlucky or lucky to work throughout, I'm not sure if it is lucky or unlucky with hindsight. I work 12 hour shifts in a food factory so was designated a key-worker from the off.

I never questioned it, never thought of 'missing out' on anything it just is what it is I thought. I have long detested my job although a recent bout of positivity, optimism and renewed vigour has dulled that particular pain significantly. Funny how the mind and the attitude can work together, huh?

I never really envied those who were being paid for being off because I knew economically we will all be screwed over for many years to come in ways we can not even begin to imagine. At times I did wonder how nice it would have been to have a little extra time off work BUT as time as gone on I realise maybe I am in the number who are lucky.

My routine hasn't been affected too much in anyway throughout this whole experience. Maybe I should be counting myself luckier than I first suspected. Although now may not be the best time to focus on that thought as I am about to go and work a 7-7 nightshift!!! Just the one, as a favour to someone at work. I have 2+ weeks away for work still so it won't scar me too badly lol.

Enjoy the weekend Asher :)
