Painting old wooden furniture to give it new life

A lick of paint

We had a nice table and chairs outside our previous home and my friend Dave always liked them. Dave helped us a lot with our move back West and wouldn't accept any money, so I gave him the furniture before we left and I also bought him a really good bottle of top shelf whiskey. They both went down well. We figured that we'd buy another setbin Galway, but between the jigs and the reels and all of the other things we have going on, we never got around to it. Luckily though the couple who sold us their house had a table and chairs. They had seen plenty of weather, but they were still solid.

I was in the shed a couple of weeks ago and was tidying a few bits up and I happened upon a tin of Sadolin. This is expensive stuff and is used on boats to keep the waterproof, so for wooden fences or furniture, I'd always recommend spending the extra few bob and buying Sadolin. If you're going to paint something to preserve it, you may as well use the best paint.

It just so happened that the colour of the leftover paint was perfect for the table and chairs, well that's my opinion anyway, you'll see some photos further down and you can make your own decision. Allium Green was the colour and it is a sage green type of colour.

Getting set up

The beauty of this type of outdoor painting is that you are out in the sunshine, because you obviously won't paint if it's raining and also you have very little prep to do. If it was inside painting, I'd be spending an hour masking taping skirting boards and door frames, putting down dust sheets and emptying the room, but for this outside job, all I needed was one dust sheet and the chairs themselves weighed it down, easy peasy lemon squeezey 🍋 🎨

Here's one I made earlier

Those chefs on the telly always say "here's one I made earlier", wel that was kind of the same thing here with the painting job, I actually painted the table when I first found the paint a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure if I'd have enough left for the chairs, but the table turned out peachy, as you'll see below.

Beach Theme

There's a bit of a coastal or beach vibe going on as you can see, herself picked up this lighthouse which I must say I like and I found these lovely perfectly rounded stones on our recent visit to the beach.

I love how rounded they have become from the erosion and deposition along the Galway coast at an Spidéal.

They've just finished drying, well almost and must say I'm delighted with how they turned out.

I've done a tonne of DIY on our new house since we bought it last July, I wonder what will be next on my list?

Peace Out and thanks for reading

I had those exact chairs and painted them last year. I found it's right pain in the chuff to get properly in between the slats on the back rest and underneath bits but once it was done they did come up lovely!

I was as happy as a pig in shit painting them to be honest. Tunes on, sun beating down, the only spanner in the works was the paint ran out so the underside is a bit half cooked, but fuck it, they'll do. I'm not planning on having the Queen around for tea anytime soon!

They do look good when they are done. I like a bit of garden work when you can just blast the tunes and get in with it!

These look gorgeous!!! People throw things out too quickly. You've given them new life and made them look super trendy as well.

They turned out very beautiful, the color very in keeping with the garden, they look like new furniture, I didn't get any of the joke 😬😅.

I love the way they have turned out, I have some similar chairs, and maybe I can give them a new life with a bit of color. By the way, I love the color you've chosen for yours.

Today dreemport brought me here. See you later in #ttt ;)

Beautiful! Loved the green colour you choose, it fits like a glove to your beach theme there 👌 The lighthouse gives it a smooth wonderful thoutch there!

I can already imagine a hangout with friends, barbacue and some wine with the #ttt spotify list playing loud to shake things up 😍

Nice work. I hate that about painting indoors with all the masking tape and covering everything!!!

Ablaze, you are rocking it in Dreemport, my friend. I am really enjoying the variety of posts that you are sharing with the community :-) Now this post... I am loving the colour of the garden furniture!!! I think I may go look for that paint myself hehe... and I am so with you on painting outdoors. I actually loved it last time I painted our garden furniture... as you say sunshine, tunes, cold drinks... out on the lawn... even the kids joined in !LOLZ I was actually having a look at ours the other day and I see that our table needs some repairs so I think that will have to be on the agenda alongside a nice new lick of paint in the next couple of weeks. I am so looking forward to the summer this year :-) !ALIVE !PIZZA !hivebits
