The beautiful Country of Singapore
Singapore
I am lucky enough to have visited Singapore three different times around ten to fifteen years ago. This was around the time my then girlfriend (now wife) and I travelled all around South East Asia. My wife's father was also working in the Oil Industry in Singapore at the time, so it was the perfect excuse to go and visit him also. Had he not been living there, we would not have visited more than once, as there is so much more to see in South East Asia, and we travelled extensively around Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Australia back then.
As per my previous Haveyoubeenhere posts, this one will be mainly visual, with around twenty or thirty of my photographs shared and a little bit of commentary along the way, where necessary. Something to bear in mind with these photos is that they were taken back in 2006 and 2007, so the photography technology was not nearly as good as it is today. I have also mislaid a lot of photos - I know that they are on an external hard drive or an old computer someplace in the house, I just need to unearth them! I did find some photos from Singapore though, which I'll share with you below.
View from the Plane
The Chang Towers
These were a great idea and I haven't really seen them outside of Asia. They basically sell you a tower of Chang beer that holds around 5 or 6 pints and you just help yourself when you go dry. It is pretty handy and means not as many trips to the bar and everyone can drink at their own pace.
There is just something about Icy cold beer on a humid evening in Singapore that absolutely hits the spot.
In typical Irish fashion, we did seek out an Irish bar to sample the local Guinness and it was no surprise that it was distinctly average, I still remember almost 15 years later!
Mr Gecko
These guys are class and they were a dime a dozen in Singapore and Asia in general. This little Gecko took up residence just outside our hotel room and was a friendly little fellow coming out to say hello most evenings when we were on way to dinner and was hoping that dinner would fly past from him to eat.
Sentosa Island - The Luge
We still have banter about this to this day. The luge is for kids and teenagers I think, but it didnt stop myself and my father in law and brother in law giving it a go. You fly down hill in these little go karts type things and they are great fun altogether. I kicked the lads asses and they were whinging says that I won because I was the lightest! The race is all downhill with gravity and skill the variables at play, but they were having none of it. I still won, so was happy with that :)
Sentosa Island - The Wave Rider
So I've seen a few of these wave rider machines since this, but in 2008 when I first saw this in Singapore, I had never seen one before and instantly myself and my brother in law wanted a go - it looked pure class. Theses photos were taken by us and are not of us, but we were equally as good if not better. We honestly didn't fall over time after time after time, as our wives looked on breaking their asses laughing at us. Honestly...
Sentosa Island - The Beach
This is the beach at Sentosa, which was nice to chill out at, now it's a man made beach as far as I remember, so no where near as nice as beaches in Thailand, Cambodia, Australia etc, but it was still nice all the same and we chilled here for a while too.
Some boats
I can't actually remember what the story was with these boats? I guess it was just down in Clarke Quay and I took a photo as I liked the look of it.
Now that's a boat!
Call that a boat!!!? This is a boat. Here is the amazing Marina Bay Sands Singapore hotel. If I go back to Singapore again, I will definitely stay here.
Here are some photos of the hotel from the internet, as my photo is old and fully do this place justice. I just wish I had more money back then, and we definitely would have stayed here for a couple of nights. Who knows, we might do a stop over some time in the future on the way to visit my best friend who lives in Australia.
Keep of the Grass
I should really not take the piss so much, as the law does not always see the funny side of this in Singapore and it can be quite easy to get a fine or worse for something that by Western standards would not seem too bad.
So, I have a tonne more photos someplace on a drive or old laptop and if I ever manage to unearth these, I may some day have a Singapore II post, but I wouldn't bank on it tbh! Oh well at least I there wasn't any old Bitcoin sitting on it, now that would be a stress!!
it is so wonderful trip. you are so lucky
Thanks a lot, yes, we were really lucky to get to travel around SE Asia for approx. 4 months back in 2007/2008

Those islands are calling me, lol.
Nice post.
Ha ha, they are calling me as well!!! Such wonderful memories...
I never saw wave rider machines in real, but i want to try it !
They are pretty cool now I must admit. They take a bit of getting used to, but once you get it, they are pretty damn class!
Omg that place looks amazing. Thanks for sharing 😃
Ya it was pretty sweet now alright, although I must admit, it probably ranked bottom of our list of Asian countries that we visited, as it was a lot more Western and the prices were high!! :)
We especially loved Cambodia, Laos and Thailand (the more off the beaten track hidden gems)

Damn this looks like it was a lot of fun dude! I've never been to SEA, or anywhere besides Italy actually lol. I wonder if I will ever be able to change that? It'd be a fucking shame if these assholes kept this bullshit up!
That's one hell of a hotel with a cruise ship on top of it lmao that's fucking epic!
Hell yeah man, you said it. Why is it that the people living have so little say in their lives and the risks they’re willing to take with them? I guess the more important question isn’t why, but HOW? I get that they brought the water up to a boil slowly, but now we all see that it’s hot as shit in here - how are we not working together yet to blow the pot open!? Fuck this man, that shit just got me fired the hell up. Anyway I always like seeing you around - taker er easy my dude!
Ya, it was a great time to be fair. We did a load of travel all around South East Asia and Australia back then for around 14 months all in and we've some unreal memories and life experiences from this time.
Well if you were to choose a country to visit, then this would be very high on the list. I love Italy, great food, great people, great cities. I've been there a bunch of times over the years.
You definitely will, this thing will definitely blow over eventually. We are all getting a bit fatigued with the whole thing now, that's for sure!
Pretty damn cool eh!!
Dude, awesome pics! I’ve never made it to Asia, at least not in a leisurely style like this. I’m sitting in a cubicle right now, and not gonna lie, you just got me craving some nice light lager :)
Also, the rooftop pool looks sick, I gotta get in one of those someday!
Ha ha, you and me both on the rooftop pool. I'll get the plans and send them onto you ;)
I'd really recommend South East Asia if you ever get the chance to make it to that side of the world. Laos, Cambodia and Thailand are some of the most beautiful countries that I've been to over the years and the people are so friendly, sincere and welcoming. I will definitely look to make it back there some day.
That sounds amazing, it’s definitely on my bucket list. And yeah, hit me up with those plans lol - in case I ever get a roof big enough for a pool hahaha
