The Flaming Lips Gig at Galway's Big Top

Well if there's one thing I can say about these guys, its that they put on a show. From the moment Wayne Coyne took to the stage with his remote control bird, which he flew around the stage, the atmosphere was electric.

In typical Galway fashion the heavens opened up before and during the gig, so people got pretty soaked getting in, but it was not water that permeated through the mass of Galway heads, no, it was the chilled happy vibe that comes with their chilled happy music.

Smiles crested all around the tent throughout their excellent two hour set and they gave everyone their money's worth as they poured everything into their performance.

The light show and overall production was top notch and the whole performance was quite theatrical and worthy of praise. Here are some photos, though they don't do it any justice at all. The real deal looked ten times better.

Abzorbing Performance

And the prize for the cringiest pun ever goes to me for the that one! So Wayne Coyne stepped into this zorb up on stage and gave it socks with the rest of the band blasting out favorites like *Waiting for Superman.

Near the end of the show he vacated his temporary bubble and the roadies filled it with stuff and sent un bouncing around the tent, which was cool to watch and participate in.

Again here are some snaps.

They played a great mix of classics including these three favorites of mine, which I'll share below for those unfamiliar with the Lips.

The Flaming Lips - She Don't Use Jelly

The Flaming Lips - Waiting For Superman

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

They finished their set with this baloon ensemble saying Fuck Yeah Galway

Fuck yeah is right!! What a night it was.

Oh my, it sounds like you had a blast!! 😁😁 was this the gig you said you were going to attend??

Going around that giant ball must have been quite the experience! Was he inside that singing??? 😱😱😱

I didn't know Flaming Lips but they seem to put up an awesome show! Very glad to see you had some fun 😊😊 live music is the best, isn't it? ❤️

Ya this is the Gig I was talking about and it was amazing, such a class show!! Ya he was singing on stage inside the ball (zorb) and then at the end, he came out and they put confetti in and everyone bounced it around the crowd, and it was really cool :P)

🤣🤣🤣🤣 that really must have been a cool experience for everyone! At least I never heard of such a thing happening in a concert 🤭🤭🤭

May the live concerts continue to be part of our lives ahahaha (I'm very philosophical today, ignore it 🙈🤣)

Ya it was cool, on their previous tour he came out into the crowd on a big unicorn on wheels! There's always something a bit of the wall!

I think they adopted the Zorb thing during Covid so that they could continue to tour (they're one of those bands who are always on the road) while enforcing social distancing rules. At that stage it wasn't just band members in the zorb, the whole audience had to stay inside what was quite literally an isolation bubble.

WWWOOOWWW! That is actually a clever idea!! Amazing how we can find solutions just to stay in touch and connected 😍

There is something I would like to go just for the fun of it 🤭🤭

Thank you for this! 😁

Sounds like an awesome gig!

I've seen the the Flaming Lips live 3 times myself and yes, they always put on a show. Waitin' for Superman is one of my favourite tracks. I'll be listening to that in the car on the way to work now...

One of the best live performances I remember from them was the track 'A spoonful weighs a ton' which as well as it's deep base line also features the Teletubbies. At the point the base kicked in they dropped a load inflated balls from the ceiling (no one was inside these ones) while on stage they had a load people dressed as animals dancing around on account of the Super Fury Animals having played as their support act. The place went wild!
