Cuba: del Segundo al Primer lugar en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Parkour [ESP-ENG]

El 23 de enero The Motus Project (Reino Unido) daba los resultados del Festival Mundial de Parkour , donde Cuba quedó en 2do lugar con el video “Digital Journey” realizado por el proyecto Overway. Por vez primera, nuestro país coronaba su nombre, en un evento internacional de cine, donde anidan los mejores exponentes del parkour mundial.

Pero la realidad, es que en nuestro archipiélago, muchos cubanos desconocen sobre esta modalidad deportiva con ese nombre extraño; y antes de aterrizar en los detalles del evento, debemos pincelar la historia de ese deporte.

¿Qué es Parkour?

Es una actividad física que germinó en la localidad de Lisses en 1980, Francia, por Raymond Belle, un bombero con conocimiento militar, y después continuada por su hijo David Belle y su grupo llamado Yamakasi. Actividad donde se usa la capacidad motora de las personas de forma natural y con total dominio, con el objetivo de ir de un punto a otro del entorno urbano y natural, de la forma más eficiente y sencilla posible y saltando obstáculos. A estos practicantes se les llama con el nombre de Traceur.

El significado de la palabra Parkour es: Recorrido, que deriva de la palabra Parcours du combattant, por el salto de obstáculos realizados en los entrenamientos militares. El que después agregó: escaladas, zonas de equilibrio, correr, y otros movimientos que se fueron perfeccionando en el tiempo.

El nombre finalmente se quedó en Parkour o PK para conferirle mayor dinamismo. Esta modalidad física también se conoce como el Arte del Desplazamiento (ADD) y en el Reino Unido se le llamó Freerunning por Sebastién Foucan, con el objetivo de lograr la Belleza del Movimiento. Es una modalidad distinta, que usa los movimientos precisos y eficientes del Parkour, incorporando la libertad del desplazamiento, las acrobacias en paisajes urbanos y en estructuras que sirven de barreras.

Tanto el Parkour como el Freerunning tienen sus seguidores, sus puntos diferenciados y convergentes, para dar como resultado, una expresión motora personal con estilo, control y elegancia, que se ha trasladado a documentales, eventos deportivos, y al cine donde abonan múltiples escenas de acción.

Hoy día, para muchos apasionados, este deporte constituye un estilo de vida al aire libre, un reto para vencer obstáculos, que cuenta con una comunidad creciente a nivel mundial.

¿Cómo llegó el Parkour a Cuba?

La chispa se encendió cerca del año 2012, con la primera generación del Parkour en el país, influida por las películas Jump London y Sector 13, surgiendo los primeros grupos como Akatsuki y Energía Urbana.

Debido a la falta de acceso de internet, el trabajo de los grupos eran aislados, y en el 2015, nace la segunda generación de Parkour, donde encontramos a Andrés David, Hansel Pérez, Arturo Pérez, Noel Alejandro, Javier y muchos otros; influenciada por la primera generación, los videojuegos para teléfonos celulares, y otros videos que llegaban a través del popular Paquete Semanal (compendio de información digital para el disfrute de los cubanos).

Nacen grupos como Adrenalinex y Overway, ganando importancia en un mejor escenario de conectividad de red, gracias a la diversidad de Parques WiFi. Se logran mejores alianzas, y los primeros encuentros o Reuniones de Traceurs (RT).

Pero en el año 2018 y 2019 surge la tercera generación de Parkour, y empieza a notarse mayor crecimiento y popularidad; apareciendo muchos atletas distribuidos a nivel de Provincias. Se crea la Federación Cubana de Parkour (CPF) encabezada por Carlos Harewood, y afiliada a la Federación Internacional de Parkour (IPF)

Se logró una mejor unificación de los grupos, a través de las distintas redes sociales, y empiezan a crearse los primeros eventos y competencias en el país, siendo notable la popularidad del grupo Overway.

¿Cómo se inserta un grupo de Parkour Cubano en un Festival de Cine Mundial?

El Festival de Cine de Parkour anual, liderado por The Motus Projects ha sido el más grande evento de su tipo en el mundo, donde desde el 2015 hasta el 2022, se han presentado cientos de videos por parte de creadores y deportistas de todas las partes del orbe. Es una gran celebración de talentos que hacen posicionar en alto, la cultura de ese deporte, y así evitar que sus historias se pierdan en el tiempo, y de las distintas redes sociales.

Desde junio se realizó la promoción al festival del 2022, el que finalizaría en diciembre con el dictamen de los resultados. El reto propuesto era hacer un pequeño filme de 15 a 30 minutos de duración, inspirado en la temática “Conexión”. Se dejó claro, que las técnicas del Parkour, no serían lo más importante en la evaluación del festival, sino la historia, la creatividad cinematográfica, la edición, la gradación del color y el sonido.

Cuatro jueces de notoriedad como: Giles Motus, Sam White, Anan Anwar y Toby Segar se escogieron para la revisión de los pequeños filmes presentados. Todo siguiendo un cronograma estricto donde a finales de noviembre, estaba fijada la fecha tope para la entrega del material.

Mi hijo Andrés David y Arturo Pérez en su proyecto Overway de Parkour, fueron los que representaron a Cuba, con un trabajo que les llevó 2 meses de filmación, edición y postproducción, donde lo enriquecieron con una rica variedad de efectos visuales con gráficos 3D. Filmaron en Alta Definición usando una cámara Canon EOS Rebel T5i, un celular Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 y una Sony Handycam.

Cómo pueden imaginar, todo fue bajo estrés y venciendo dificultades. Ya después, vendría la otra parte complicada, subir un archivo de video Full HD de 1080p de 2.2GB de almacenamiento de datos, a una dirección específica asignada, y antes de la fecha tope, que era el 21 de noviembre.

Andrés y Arturo fueron al Centro de Negocios en Miramar el día 19, y no pudieron hacer nada, porque el local estaba lleno de personas; de ahí partieron a hoteles cercanos, pero la velocidad de internet era muy lenta. Regresaron a mi casa, y probaron con el servicio Nauta Hogar, pero pasaba lo mismo, y el reloj les recordaba el poco tiempo que les quedaba para ello. Pero al llegar la noche, mejoró la conexión de internet a través de los datos móviles, y comprando el paquete más caro que vende la Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba (ETECSA), fue que lograron subir el video completo, que tiene una duración de 20 minutos.

Pero una vez subido el mismo, había que efectuar un pago para la admisión del trabajo al evento, para su revisión por el jurado. Desde Cuba eso es imposible, así que recurrieron a que la hermana de Arturo, desde Estados Unidos les efectuara el pago, al equivalente en libras esterlinas, pero no lo lograba. Se percataron que la cuenta de la plataforma Filmfreeway, fue creada en Cuba, y por cuestiones de Bloqueo, se imposibilitaba efectuar la transacción.

A esa hora, con el corazón en la boca, tuvieron que jugar su última carta, y usaron una Red Privada Virtual (VPN), para abrir otra cuenta en el mismo lugar, como si fuese desde Estados Unidos, y así fue que se pudo finalmente efectuar el pago del video al Festival, el que nuevamente, tuvieron que subir al sitio.

Según el cronograma del Festival, los resultados se conocerían a más tardar, el 22 de diciembre de 2022, y todos esperaban el gran día. Pero la realidad, fue que se atrasó todo, por trabajos pendientes del jurado, que le imposibilitaron analizar a tiempo los videos presentados. Toda la información oficial se publicaba vía Instagram.
El día de 22 de noviembre, publicaron en Youtube el Trailer de “Digital Journey” teniendo una gran repercusión.

El día 23 de enero de 2023, The Motus Projects daba finalmente, los resultados del Festival:

- Primer lugar, el video filmado en Santorini “The Parkour Paradise” por los españoles Biel Macia Peramiquel y David Escobar Gil.

- Segundo lugar, el video “Digital Journey” por el grupo Overway.

- Tercer lugar, el video “Kontrast” por The Oldskool Grasshoppers.

Aparte de los 3 lugares, se nombraron 3 menciones de otros autores.

¿Cómo pasan del segundo lugar al primer lugar?

Tras los primeros comentarios de Felicitaciones a los premiados en Instagram, pasó algo que cambió el rumbo de esta historia.
Una persona se percató al ver parte de los trailers de los 3 ganadores, que el video de Santorini, era un trabajo, que había visto publicado desde el 2021. Ello puso la mira de toda la comunidad en ese detalle, y empezaron a verse nuevos comentarios de personas que ya corroboraron lo mismo.

The Motus Projects escribió un e.mail donde refirió que estaban revaluando ese hecho, y que darían un nuevo dictamen. Ayer, día 25 de enero de 2023, quedaba Cuba como el principal ganador del Festival; y de tercer lugar, el autor de la primera mención.

Y citando mis palabras publicadas en mi perfil de Facebook:

...el mayor premio de Overway, es haber posicionado el nombre de Cuba, por vez primera, en el más grande Festival de Cine especializado en Parkour, y que será el último realizado por The Motus Projects.

Dos chicos, usaron su dominio deportivo, su ingenio, creatividad y su habilidad de filmación y postproducción, usando sus pocos recursos técnicos, para en 2 meses gestar un gran trabajo audiovisual, que quedará para la historia. “Digital Journey” es el Viaje Digital de 2 cubanos amantes del Parkour, que lograron la travesía de llegar a puerto internacional, y pasar de un segundo lugar al primero.
Nada, que estaba escrito en el destino, que así sería.

Cuba: Second to First Place at the International Parkour Film Festival

On January 23rd The Motus Project (UK) announced the results of the World Parkour Festival , where Cuba came in 2nd place with the video "Digital Journey" made by the Overway project. For the first time, our country crowned its name in an international film event, where the best exponents of world parkour nest.

But the reality is that in our archipelago, many Cubans do not know about this sport modality with that strange name; and before landing on the details of the event, we must paint the history of the sport.

What is Parkour?

It is a physical activity that germinated in the town of Lisses in 1980, France, by Raymond Belle, a fireman with military knowledge, and then continued by his son David Belle and his group called Yamakasi. Activity where people's motor skills are used in a natural way and with total mastery, with the objective of going from one point to another in the urban and natural environment, in the most efficient and simple way possible and jumping over obstacles. These practitioners are called Traceur.
The meaning of the word Parkour is: Tour, which derives from the word Parcours du combattant, for the jumping of obstacles made in military training. Which then added: climbing, balance zones, running, and other movements that were perfected over time.

The name finally became Parkour or PK to give it more dynamism. This physical modality is also known as the Art of Displacement (ADD) and in the United Kingdom it was called Freerunning by Sebastién Foucan, with the objective of achieving the Beauty of Movement. It is a different modality, which uses the precise and efficient movements of Parkour, incorporating the freedom of movement, acrobatics in urban landscapes and structures that serve as barriers.

Both Parkour and Freerunning have their followers, their differentiated and convergent points, to give as a result, a personal motor expression with style, control and elegance, which has been transferred to documentaries, sporting events, and movies where they pay multiple action scenes.

Today, for many enthusiasts, this sport is an outdoor lifestyle, a challenge to overcome obstacles, with a growing community worldwide.

How did Parkour come to Cuba?

The spark was lit around 2012, with the first generation of Parkour in the country, influenced by the movies Jump London and Sector 13, emerging the first groups like Akatsuki and Energia Urbana.

Due to the lack of internet access, the work of the groups were isolated, and in 2015, the second generation of Parkour is born, where we find Andrés David, Hansel Pérez, Arturo Pérez, Noel Alejandro, Javier and many others; influenced by the first generation, video games for cell phones, and other videos that arrived through the popular Weekly Package (compendium of digital information for the enjoyment of Cubans).

Groups such as Adrenalinex and Overway were born, gaining importance in a better scenario of network connectivity, thanks to the diversity of WiFi Parks. Better alliances are achieved, and the first Traceurs (RT) meetings or Reunions.

But in 2018 and 2019 the third generation of Parkour emerges, and begins to notice greater growth and popularity; appearing many athletes distributed at the level of Provinces. The Cuban Parkour Federation (CPF) is created, headed by Carlos Harewood, and affiliated to the International Parkour Federation (IPF)
A better unification of the groups was achieved, through the different social networks, and the first events and competitions began to be created in the country, being remarkable the popularity of the group Overway.

How is a Cuban Parkour group inserted in a World Film Festival?

The annual Parkour Film Festival, led by The Motus Projects has been the largest event of its kind in the world, where from 2015 to 2022, hundreds of videos have been presented by creators and athletes from all parts of the orb. It is a great celebration of talents that make the culture of the sport stand out and prevent their stories from being lost in time and in the different social networks.

Since June, the promotion of the 2022 festival was carried out, which would end in December with the results. The challenge was to make a short film of 15 to 30 minutes, inspired by the theme "Connection". It was made clear that Parkour techniques would not be the most important thing in the evaluation of the festival, but the story, cinematographic creativity, editing, color grading and sound.

Four well-known judges such as Giles Motus, Sam White, Anan Anwar and Toby Segar were chosen to review the small films submitted. All following a strict schedule where the deadline for the delivery of the material was set for the end of November.

My son Andres David and Arturo Perez in their project Overway Parkour, were the ones who represented Cuba, with a work that took them 2 months of filming, editing and postproduction, where they enriched it with a rich variety of visual effects with 3D graphics. They filmed in High Definition using a Canon EOS Rebel T5i camera, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 cell phone and a Sony Handycam.
As you can imagine, everything was under stress and overcoming difficulties. Then came the other complicated part, uploading a Full HD 1080p video file of 2.2GB of data storage, to a specific assigned address, and before the deadline, which was November 21st.

Andres and Arturo went to the Business Center in Miramar on the 19th, and they couldn't do anything, because the place was full of people; from there they went to nearby hotels, but the internet speed was very slow. They returned to my house, and tried with the Nauta Hogar service, but the same thing happened, and the clock reminded them how little time they had left for it. But when the night came, the internet connection improved through mobile data, and buying the most expensive package sold by Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA), they were able to upload the full video, which has a duration of 20 minutes.

But once uploaded, a payment had to be made for the admission of the work to the event, for its review by the jury. From Cuba that is impossible, so they resorted to Arturo's sister, from USA, to make the payment, the equivalent in pounds sterling, but she was unable to do so. They realized that the account of the Filmfreeway platform was created in Cuba, and due to the blockade, it was impossible to make the transaction.

At that time, with their hearts in their mouths, they had to play their last card, and used a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to open another account in the same place, as if it were from USA, and that is how they were finally able to make the payment of the video to the Festival, which again, they had to upload to the site.

According to the Festival's schedule, the results would be known no later than December 22, 2022, and everyone was waiting for the big day. But the reality was that everything was delayed due to the jury's pending work, which made it impossible for them to analyze the submitted videos in time. All the official information was published via Instagram.
On November 22nd, the Trailer of "Digital Journey" was published on Youtube with great repercussion.

On January 23rd, 2023, The Motus Projects finally announced the results of the Festival:

- First place, the video filmed in Santorini "The Parkour Paradise" by the Spaniards Biel Macia Peramiquel and David Escobar Gil.

- Second place, the video "Digital Journey" by the Overway group.

- Third place, the video "Kontrast" by The Oldskool Grasshoppers.

Apart from the 3 places, 3 mentions of other authors were named.

How do they go from second place to first place?

After the first few comments of Congratulations to the awardees on Instagram, something happened that changed the course of this story.
One person noticed while watching part of the trailers of the 3 winners, that the video of Santorini, was a work, which he had seen published since 2021. This put the whole community's attention on that detail, and new comments from people who already corroborated the same thing started to be seen.
The Motus Projects wrote an e-mail stating that they were reevaluating this fact, and that they would give a new opinion. Yesterday, January 25, 2023, Cuba was the main winner of the Festival; and in third place, the author of the first mention.

And quoting my words published in my Facebook profile:

...the greatest prize of Overway, is to have positioned the name of Cuba, for the first time, in the biggest Film Festival specialized in Parkour, and that will be the last one made by The Motus Projects.

Two guys, used their sporting proficiency, ingenuity, creativity and filming and post-production skills, using their few technical resources, to gestate in 2 months a great audiovisual work, which will remain for history. "Digital Journey" is the journey of 2 Cuban Parkour lovers, who achieved the journey to reach international port, and go from second place to first place.
Nothing, it was written in the destiny, that it would be so.
