Chapter 4

Audio Sources: The most important things about turntable cartridges and stylus

The cartridge in a turntable is a crucial part for us to have the best possible sound quality. It is responsible for extracting the information from the grooves of our vinyl records.
If we have a good turntable, a quality arm and a good phono pre, but our cartridge is not the right one, the sound we will get will never be the expected one.

What are the 2 most used types of cartridges?

The MC (moving coil) and the MM (moving magnet).

SourceSource

In MC cartridge, the movement of the stylu acts directly on the coil, while in MM cartridge, the movement of the stylus acts on a magnet that sends the signal to a coil.

MC cartridge are more accurate, and are able to extract more information. But they have a lower voltage output level than MMs.

MC cartridge typically deliver between 0.3 and 2.5 mV (millivolts), while MM cartridge can reach 7 mV. Although there are high output MC cartridge, such as the Ortofon MC-1 Turbo , which allow you to enjoy an MC with an MM pre phono.

An advantage of the MM, is that as their output signal is higher, they are more easily amplifiable. Something that we must take into account, because to enjoy the qualities of a good moving coil cartridge, we will have to use a good phono pre, which is able to amplify with precision, the minimum possible distortion of the weak electrical signal that extracts from the cartridge, and this increases the price of this.

Changing the stylus in MM cartridge is simpler and has the advantage of making it easier to check its condition by visual inspection with a magnifying glass or a pocket microscope.

In MC, the cartridge must be disassembled and sent to a specialized center, especially in many high-end models.

The elasticity of the stem, or compliance, is usually higher in MM cartridge than in MC, causing the tone arm to behave differently depending on the weight. The light tone arm is used for mounting MM cartridge, and the heavier tone arm is used for most MC cartridge.

MC cartridge carry stylus with stiffer shanks, which allow better transmission of microscopic variations in the disc groove without absorption. The optimum support force also differs: in MM cartridge it ranges from 1.25 to 2 grams, and in MC from 2 g upwards.

MC cartridge require a suspension system for the stylus, which is sensitive to changes in humidity and ambient temperature.

Among the most recognized brands offering MC cartridge are: Goldring, Ortofon, Rega, Benz Micro, Clearaudio, Koetsu, Grado, Audio-Technica, Shure, Pro-Ject, Sumiko, Van den Hul, among others.

Their price ranges from 200 to more than 4500 euros per unit.

Stylus in a cartridge:

The stylus is part of the cartridge and the one that directly contacts the vinyl grooves. They can be made of different materials, ruby or diamond for their durability. Over time they wear out, the sound loses quality and need to be renewed.

They vary in shape, they can be elliptical, conical, micro linear and others have even received the name of their inventors, example: Shibata, Soundsmith OCL.

The shape of the stylus and its complexity is related to the calibration of the unit with the tone arm of the turntable to achieve the most correct angulation when impacting the acetate groove, a process called Alignment.

The greater the complexity of the stylus, the more precise alignment is required.
The conical or spherical stylus are the most common and cheapest to find on the market, and allow an easier alignment. They have the disadvantage that they do not reach the depth of the groove, only its sides. And it is at the depth where the highest frequencies are recorded and therefore cannot be reproduced in their entirety. One of the most commonly used conical stylus is the well-known ATN3600.

Elliptical stylus, can be of 2 types: Nude and Bonded, the latter being, the most common in this type of stylus and also in tapered stylus.

A lower mass stylus will give more precision and information in the reading of the vinyl microsurface, taking the physical vibrations to a final magnetic field.

The Shibata stylus is able to read at higher frequencies than the previous ones (45 KHz, compared to 22 KHz), as it captures the registers in other areas of the groove. By exerting less pressure, its useful life is enhanced by wear and tear.

The microlinear stylus reach precise groove depths, better extracting the responses of the original recording. Their wear is very low, due to the reduction of their lateral radius, which results in less friction.

To conclude. Although MC cartridge are the favorites, there are very good MM cartridge that give a great sound, especially if the whole audio chain harmonizes with quality, and our auditory system allows us to discriminate efficiently.
It is important to choose the stylus that best suits us, and that harmonizes with the cartridge we use in our turntable. We must always keep the records and the stylus clean of dust, using antistatic pads and brushes for these purposes, so we will prolong their life time and we will have the expected sound quality.

Hola.
