Some weeks or probably a couple of months ago before I studied more on prompt engineering, I was at an office meeting and had an impromptu decision to start chatting with ChatGPT. I was just curious then how well it can handle another language.

🎶Meanwhile, some music for you to enjoy as you read. This piece is part of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, particularly the first of the 4 violin concertos, called Spring.

I started asking what is cataract in Chinese. The answer came out well.
@ace108

Next, I immediately switch to communicating in Chinese as if I am a patient consulting a doctor for cataract issue. So, I asked if someone tells me I have cataract, what should I do? The reply means if someone tells you that you may have cataracts, it is recommended that you go to an ophthalmologist for examination and diagnosis as soon as possible. Ophthalmologists can determine if you have cataracts by examining the condition of your eyes and performing some simple vision tests. If cataracts are diagnosed, doctors usually recommend surgical treatment.Cataract surgery is a routine ophthalmic surgery that can restore vision by removing the cloudy lens from the eyeball and replacing it with an artificial lens. The surgery is usually very safe, and most people are able to recover their vision and continue with their daily activities after the surgery. Before and after the surgery, the doctor will give you detailed instructions and advice to ensure your safety and successful surgical treatment.
@ace108

My followup question was: What are the treatments for cataract?I got some help translating the response to English. The treatment methods for cataracts usually include surgical and non-surgical treatments. Non-surgical treatments mainly include adjusting the degree of glasses, using lenses that increase contrast, changing lighting conditions and other methods. These methods may have some effect on early cataracts, but they cannot restore vision for advanced cataracts.” Surgical treatment is currently the most effective and commonly used method for treating cataracts. Cataract surgery is a routine ophthalmic surgery that takes about 15 to 30 minutes. It restores vision by removing the cloudy lens from the eyeball and replacing it with an artificial lens. The surgery is usually very safe and most people are able to recover their vision and continue with their daily activities after the surgery."。 In addition, some studies have shown that lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and regular exercise can reduce the risk of developing cataracts. However, these methods cannot treat people who already have cataracts. If you think you may have cataracts, it is recommended that you seek medical attention as soon as possible, listen to the advice of professional doctors, and choose appropriate treatment methods according to their advice.”
@ace108

Curious about what cause cataract so I asked what causes cataract.Some translation help give the information on causes of cateract. This sentence translates to “The main cause of cataracts is the degeneration and accumulation of lens proteins, which causes the lens to become blurry and cloudy. Some common causes of cataracts include: 1. Age: As you get older, the tissue in your lens gradually ages and degenerates, making cataracts more likely to occur. 2. Genetics: Genetic factors may be an important cause of cataracts. Some people's lenses are more prone to degeneration and cloudiness than others. 3. Exposure to ultraviolet light: Long-term exposure to ultraviolet light, especially without protective eyewear, may increase the risk of developing cataracts." 4. Long-term use of corticosteroids: Long-term use of corticosteroids may increase the risk of developing cataracts. 5. Other diseases and eye injuries: Other diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, as well as eye injuries, may also increase the risk of cataracts. In conclusion, cataracts are a very common eye disease, and age is one of the main risk factors. If you have other risk factors such as prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, use of corticosteroid medications, etc., it is recommended that you pay attention to your eye health and undergo regular eye examinations.
@ace108

I next asked what are the risk of surgery treatment?Translated to English, this is what it mentioned about the risks. "Cataract surgery is a common ophthalmic surgery, and the surgical risk is usually low, but there may still be some potential risks and complications, including but not limited to:Infection: Infection may occur after surgery and usually occurs within a few days to weeks after surgery.Bleeding: A small amount of bleeding may occur during the operation, but it usually does not affect the surgical outcome.Retinal detachment: Retinal detachment may occur during the operation, but this situation occurs relatively rarely.Late cataract: After surgery, some patients occasionally experience cataract clouding again.Dislocation of artificial lens: The artificial lens may become dislocated or displaced, but this situation occurs relatively rarely.Poor vision: Although cataract surgery can usually effectively restore vision, in some cases vision may not be fully restored after surgery.In summary, cataract surgery is a very safe and successful surgery. Most people can recover their vision and continue their daily activities after surgery. However, if you decide to undergo surgical treatment, it is best to consult your doctor in advance to understand the potential risks and complications of the surgery and make decisions based on your doctor's advice."
@ace108

Last question. What are the effects after surgical treatment?Translated explanation of the effects is:Cataract surgery is a highly effective treatment method that can significantly improve vision and enhance quality of life. Here are some common effects after surgical treatment: 1. Significant improvement in vision: Surgery can help restore lost vision, and most patients experience noticeable vision improvement within a few days after the procedure. 2. Enhanced quality of life: After surgery, patients can typically resume daily activities such as driving, reading, watching television, etc., leading to an improved quality of life. 3. Reduced dizziness and headaches: Cataracts can cause vision decline and dizziness, but surgical treatment can alleviate these symptoms. 4. Lower risk of ocular inflammation: Cataract surgery can also reduce the risk of ocular inflammation and other related complications. In summary, cataract surgery is a safe and highly effective procedure that significantly improves vision, quality of life, and restores the ability to engage in daily activities while reducing cataract-related symptoms and complications. However, surgical outcomes may vary from person to person. It is advisable to consult with your doctor before undergoing surgery to understand the potential effects and risks of the procedure and make a decision based on their recommendations.
@ace108

I think it handled the Chinese-speaking patient rather well. 👍 So, I ended with YYDS. I leave you to Google or ChatGPT (maybe the new way of referring to searching online) that.The reply sort of means: Thank you for your praise! If you have any other questions or need help, please let me know. I will do my best to provide you with the information and support you need!

I wonder if ai will help curb those who go down the rathole when googling their ailments. Some indigestion can turn into ulcers or intestinal cancer in a hurry but maybe chat gpt will help with more intelligent algorithms?

Love seeing the uses of ai when they are positive and helping everyone learn.
