Who sets the pace for change? - Eng & Ger

They should send the garbage trucks more often to pick up all this garbage. Look how many flies there are! That's why when it rains the sewers get clogged and flooding occurs. This is the reasoning used by the neighbors of a neighborhood in one of the many metropolises in Latin America to complain about their government in front of the T.V. cameras of their local news.

They are complaining about the garbage accumulated in an empty lot in the area. The message is clear - the mayor is incapable of doing his job. The reporter simply informs the viewer, but the message conveyed through the images - good thing smells can't be transmitted on TV - of plastic bags, dead animals, empty milk packages, old tires, and the interviewees' dissatisfaction only feed the viewer's already damaged subjectivity.

The complaints may seem understandable and fair. After all, keeping the city clean is the responsibility of our leaders, right? Well, let's look at the issue. Yes, organizing the budget and logistics to perform every public service is the mayor's responsibility, but I would like to ask first, why is that empty lot in that neighborhood full of garbage? Who dumped that garbage there? Do you know what I mean?

Verstehen Sie, was ich meine?

The point of my article is not necessary to emphasize the ineptitude and corruption of many of our government officials - there is already plenty of material on that subject - but rather to point out the lack of awareness of citizens to assume their share of responsibility for some of the problems that afflict them. At the same time, I would like to point out that the guideline for a truly positive change in our society does not fall primarily on our leaders but on each one of us, the ordinary citizen. How many of our social problems are the product of the apathy of the average citizen?

Sure, our City Officials have the responsibility to keep the city clean, but that job would be more effective if its inhabitants did not litter. In my opinion, the inability to be self-critical and the lack of individual initiative are sinking us deeper into our misery every day. Victimhood and the impulse to always blame the other is a poison that spreads silently and slowly through all the veins of our society, creates distrust, and divides us.

Perhaps we live under the delusion that individual efforts are insufficient, but I believe that nothing could be further from the truth. Simple things such as respecting the 10 items checkout line at the supermarket, putting the garbage in its place, being on time, not borrowing paper from the office, billing honestly, calibrating the scale correctly, keeping the sidewalk on our street free of obstacles, yielding the right of way to those who use their car's turn signal, helping the week to carry their bags - among other things -, are small, big actions that drive change for the good of our society. The added value of all this provides us with the moral authority that allows us to demand results from those who govern us. Social advancement or progress is the fruit of a symbiosis between mandataries and constituents, who fight for worthy common values.

So true. I often see people dumping rubbish around as long as it isn't on their land they don't care.

Where the council and city officials are to blame is for the ridiculous rubbish collection systems, removal of bins, reduced city cleaning services and unfriendly and expensive rubbish removal at civic sites.

I just need to mention Gelbe Säcke as an awful example of causing a mess in our towns, especially when they don't collect or with windy weather. Why not collect rubbish and sort it at the collection point.. oh that would be too much common sense!!!

I know, that makes me mad as well!

Yes, they carry a great part of the blame for their bad planning, inefficient logistic and corruption

Many countries do that and it works very well.

I couldn't agree more. It brings to mind being sinless before casting a stone.

Well said @acgalarza!
It’s not just the leaders who are responsible, each one is.
It won’t work unless everyone will do their part

I agree with you, each one of us is part of the solution. 🙂👍

You have raised a very good point sir.💕

We should also support our government in this matter. If everyone give their 1% in this matter then they can keep their country clean.
If everyone stands together in this, our country will be safe from the pollution.

Yes, I agree! They do work for us but every citizen should carry on with their own personal responsibilities.

Yes, if everyone makes a little effort we can change our cities.

I get often mad when I see how people dump their trash everywhere. What comes into their minds to through stuff out of the car at the freeway entrance? Oh, I have to get rid of this, otherwise, I can't drive on the freeway.
Or all the stuff I see when I go on a hiking tour. People treat nature and other places like shit. I take all my trash with me home and get rid of it there. It's not that hard.

Me too! I makes me really mad...and disappointed too.

What comes into their minds to through stuff out of the car at the freeway entrance?

Probably nothing! Sad!

Or all the stuff I see when I go on a hiking tour. People treat nature and other places like shit.

I know! They want to enjoy nature but they treat it like a garbage can! 😤

I take all my trash with me home and get rid of it there. It's not that hard.

Bravo, and thank you! Yes, is not hard at all! Keep up the good work!

Thank you! At least not all people are like this. I know many people who love nature and hiking and they would never do this.

society is composed of small units, the citizens. I guess if all are responsible, there will be no issue like this.

This kind of attitude is becoming common and that's just sad. We like to blame someone else but we don't want to be accountable to our actions.

It a human tendency - to blame others. To be accountable is something very few are open to.
