Photographic Tour through Canary Islands Military Museum🏛️🇮🇨 [ENG-ESP]

(Edited)

Before arriving on the island of Tenerife, I was looking for places of historical interest to visit. The Military Museum of the Canary Islands was one of my main objectives, and a few weeks ago I had the opportunity to go there. In this community, a post was recently published about the Pyramids of Güímar, which is another archaeological site I plan to visit soon on the Island of Tenerife. The entrance to the Military Museum of the Canary Islands is free, although it has certain opening hours depending on the days of the week. From the outside it seems to be a facility of a not so big size, but once you enter you realize that it is actually not so, because in the surroundings you can find other facilities belonging to an ancient battery of cannons, which goes underground.

It seems to me that this is the first time that a post about this site is published on Hive. There are still many sites on the Island of Tenerife that perhaps have not been brought to the blockchain. I hope to be able to do it through my blog. I am very attracted to museums and old buildings. In the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife there is a museum dedicated to nature and human history, which I plan to visit soon. The Museo Militar de Canarias is located in the north of the city of Santa Cruz, very close to the road that connects with San Andres and Playa Las Teresitas, further north.

The museum contains a good amount of information and ancient artifacts, which is why I ended up taking a considerable amount of pictures. You can find the military history of the Canary Islands, not only from the arrival of the Crown of Castile to the islands several centuries ago, but also about the Canary Islands participation in the world wars of the last century. At the reception you can find people who will guide you about the beginning of the tour. It is something important since you can even find signs on the floor and stairs that tell you where to start, so you do not miss anything during the tour.

The museum contains a large number of old cannons, which were used to defend the coasts from invasions by pirate or foreign ships. There are not only gunpowder cannons but also some less ancient ones used by more modern military armies. Likewise, you can find many curiosities, as well as ancient flags and shields, maps, telescopes, costumes, and a very striking metal armor which are part of the "cliché" image we have of medieval times. The history of the Canary Islands is somewhat similar to that of Latin America. It was previously inhabited by aborigines called Guanches, and then was incorporated into the Spanish Crown through certain military battles. It is a very interesting history and maybe I will do a post about it later.

The costumes on display and in the paintings are very similar or almost identical to those worn by historical figures from the times of Venezuelan and Latin American independence. I didn't really find references to Latin America, at least I didn't notice them, but there are many references to geopolitical conflicts with Great Britain. In fact, there is a section where we can find a giant flag of Great Britain, and some important battles like the attempted invasion of the English Horatio Nelson to Santa Cruz de Tenerife several centuries ago. Also, there is a very interesting section where they talk about the participation of the Spanish army in the Sahara, Northwest Africa.

Something I really liked were the models that can be found in the museum, which represent some castles in their original state and also representations of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife centuries ago. It is literally a trip to the past of the island. The photo where you can see a group of ships at sea reminds me a lot of a game called Age of Empires. If you are or were a fan of this game you will really love to visit this museum. Another aspect that has caught my attention since I was a kid are the maps. The military museum also displays old maps of the islands.

If you are a lover of the history of the world wars and the cold war, this museum is also for you. There is a section outside the main building where you can see typical war vehicles of the time. The typical dark green trucks or cannons. There is a very curious artifact with a big antenna, which is a missile radar or something like that. Some helicopters and tanks are also exhibited, and there are cannons of the time, which are not only in the context of the world wars but also of the cold war and the Spanish civil war.

But this museum doesn't end here. Just on the other side of the main building, you can find a subway gallery that from the outside seems to be no big deal, but inside it contains tunnels with a good amount of artifacts and more models of the city in ancient times. At the bottom of this tunnel, you can find two almost totally dark chambers. It is a bit scary to enter there, especially on a day when it is not very busy, and also at the bottom you can see an ancient cell where a pirate is locked up with his parrot. It is a dummy of a pirate, obviously not a real pirate.

That's wonderful! It's great to hear about your interest in exploring places of historical significance on the island of Tenerife. The Military Museum of the Canary Islands sounds like a fascinating destination, and it's even better that the entrance is free. It must have been an intriguing experience to discover the hidden underground facilities and the ancient battery of cannons surrounding the museum.

It was an amazing trip to the past of the island. Discovering those tunnels was a surprise for me because I was leaving the museum but I decided to check what was inside an entry and it added like 30 minutes more to my tour.
