What Does Spirituality Mean To You? #EcoTrain #QOTW [ENG-ESP]

After reading @filoriologo's writing about spirituality I immediately wanted to share my views on it in the EcoTrain community through his Question-of-the-week 9.1. This is my first post in this community.

Spirituality, as its name says, refers to the quality of spirit. And what is spirit? All words ending with the suffix "ity" refer to the quality of an abstract concept (creative, creativity), which we know serves to describe the attribute of something, but which has no physical representation. Spirituality refers to me to the inner essence of everything. It goes beyond the physical, obviously. It means being content, complete, the everything. I think spirituality refers to being in tune with the "Whole", and has to do with what @filoriologo mentions about the transcendent or limitless.

The Whole goes beyond the sum of its parts. We can study each organ of our body, and come to understand it very well, but when we put together all the organs and cells of the body, something different is created, that goes beyond, and that presents complexities that science still fails to understand. When designing and calculating a building, we can understand very well how each beam or column works separately, but when we put everything together in the real structure, situations or structural behaviors may arise that perhaps no computer program could have anticipated.

La espiritualidad se refiere para mi a la esencia interior de todo. Va más allá de lo físico, obviamente. Significa estar contento, completo, el todo. Creo que la espiritualidad se refiere a estar en sintonía con el "Todo", y tiene que ver con lo que menciona @filoriologo acerca de lo trascendente o ilimitado.

For me, deep down, spirituality is a way for human beings to experience and live, to connect with things that give us life. It is a kind of "dimension" that we can reach, because it represents the bridge between the material or finite and the "infinite" or the Whole.

A lo que me refiero es que estamos muy acostumbrados a nuestra realidad física, la fragmentación, separar las cosas materiales. Pero si hay algo de lo que hablan frecuentemente algunas religiones y disciplinas espirituales es a una especie de unidad universal, todos somos uno. El Todo.

Algunos filósofos hablaban de lo material y lo espiritual o no-físico como dos cosas con el mismo origen, o lo mismo expresado de dos formas diferentes (Descartes y Spinoza). Podemos entender muchos fenómenos físicos gracias a la ciencia, pero hay aspectos donde la ciencia parece no llegar aún. La consciencia, el pensamiento, la esencia de la vida, etc.

Para mi, en el fondo, la espiritualidad es una manera que tenemos los seres humanos de experimentar y vivir, conectar con cosas que nos dan vida. Es una especie de "dimensión" a la que podemos llegar, porque representa el puente entre lo material o finito y lo "infinito" o el Todo.

Perhaps science and spirituality are intertwined at some point that we cannot yet reach or understand. Today we know that the internal energy that makes up the atoms, the particles, is present in everything. And it exists, at least since the Big Bang or even further back.

My point of view about spirituality is based on the fact that we are a being with physical dimensions, but at the same time we have other "dimensions" that make us who we are. We have consciousness, thought, emotions. And the idea is to bring these emotions and thoughts into harmony. When we "disconnect" from God, from the transcendent, and we become attached to the material, I guess that is when we are less spiritual.

Quizás la ciencia y la espiritualidad se entrelazan en algún punto al cual aún no podemos llegar o comprender aún. Hoy en día sabemos que la energía interna que conforma a los átomos, las partículas, está presente en todo. Y existe, al menos desde el Big Bang o incluso más atrás.

Mi punto de vista acerca de la espiritualidad se basa en que somos un ser con dimensiones físicas, pero que a la vez posee otras "dimensiones" que nos hacen ser como somos. Tenemos consciencia, pensamiento, emociones. Y la idea es hacer que estas emociones y pensamientos estén en armonía. Cuando nos "desconectamos" de Dios, de lo trascendente, y nos apegamos a lo material, supongo que es cuando menos espirituales somos.

Are we a body with a soul or a soul with a body? If the body evolved according to biology, where does the soul come from? I believe that evolutionarily, by controlling the environment, the human being developed the ability to study and understand the laws of cause-effect over time. Something that animals are perhaps not interested in or are not able to do, since they would be "more machines than us" (a topic that I will explain in another post...).

And when we became interested in time, perhaps we also became interested in the beginning and the end of time, the infinite or the eternal. Instead of staying with the finite of the available material, we wanted to go beyond and see the Whole.

¿Somos un cuerpo con alma o un alma con cuerpo? ¿Si el cuerpo evolucionó según la biología de donde surge el alma? Creo que evolutivamente, al controlar el entorno, el ser humano desarrolló la habilidad de estudiar y entender las leyes de causa-efecto en el tiempo. Cosa que los animales quizás no están interesados o no son capaces de hacer, ya que serían "más máquinas que nosotros" (tema que explicaré en otro post...).

Y al interesarnos en el tiempo, quizás nos empezó a interesar también el inicio y el final de los tiempos, el infinito o lo eterno. En vez de quedarnos con lo finito de lo material disponible, quisimos ir más allá y ver el Todo.

It is very easy to feed the body, but how does one feed the soul or spirit? Some might feel that satisfaction by praying, or reading the Bible. Others may feel it by watching a sunset. Others by listening to or creating music. Others through study or reason. It is something that fills you, and drives you to do transcendent things, things that last in time. To create, to give life.

I think our emotions have a lot to do with it. I always rely on the concept of "energy in motion". Emotions move us. And the idea would be to give a path to that emotion so that it is guided by the "good" by the transcendent or spiritual, and not guided by the ego or the material, the external chaos. Although some do not agree with the term "emotional intelligence", perhaps it would be more appropriate to say "giving intelligence to emotion".

Es muy fácil alimentar al cuerpo, pero ¿Cómo se alimenta el alma o espíritu? Algunos podrían sentir esa satisfacción al rezar, o al leer la Biblia. Otros la pueden sentir viendo un atardecer. Aunque algunos no están de acuerdo con el término "inteligencia emocional", quizás sería más adecuado decir "darle inteligencia a la emoción".

Perhaps spirituality can be seen as a window to the transcendent. But we must take care to clean and maintain that window in good condition, to improve it.... I think that to simplify spirituality is to do that which "fills you up", makes you feel complete, content. Create something transcendent in time.

Quizás se pueda ver la espiritualidad como una ventana hacia lo trascendente. Pero debemos encargarnos de limpiar y mantener dicha ventana en buenas condiciones, mejorarla... Creo que para simplificar la espiritualidad es hacer eso que te "llena", te hace sentir completo, contento. Crear algo trascendente en el tiempo.
