Desde niña María había demostrado ser diferente, la sociedad de su época y las normas de etiqueta exigían y esperaban de ella que fuera una mujer que se dedicara a coser, bordar, tener hijos, ser la señora de la casa, seguir las normas de etiqueta, ser refinada, usar un apretado corset, guantes, y sombrero, en fin que se rigiera completamente por las normas y costumbres de la época.

María durante su niñez recibió múltiples regaños porque no se sentaba correctamente en la mesa, no usaba los cubiertos correctamente, o no aprendía las puntadas de bordado o punto de cruz, al llegar a cierta edad la enviaron a la escuela para señoritas, porque la ambición de toda mujer es conseguir un buen partido para casarse, debe ser acaudalado, de buena familia y finos modales que pueda darle todas las comunidades, una casa en una buena y costosa en una buena zona, muchos sirvientes, una modista que le haga los vestidos a la última moda, en fin ser la fina dama de sociedad.

Pero esta niña fue creciendo y como la lectura en su hogar si estaba permitida y su padre era de mente más abierta y creía que su hija podía ser capaz de algo más, le permitió y sembró en ella el hábito de la lectura, así María devoraba cada libro de la biblioteca y su padre siempre le traía algún otro para nutrir su intelecto, además de fomentar en ella un espíritu crítico, pues esta niña siempre demostró tener inteligencia, y la lectura hizo que creciera en inteligencia, astucia y enriqueciera aún más su lenguaje de manera extraordinaria.

La madre de María, doña Gertrudis, tenía muchas veces discusiones con su esposo, pues ella deseaba como toda madre de finales del siglo XIX ver a su hija comprometida con un buen partido, que pudiera darle todas las comodidades y a su vez aumentará el patrimonio de la familia, no solo con un buen apellido también con su bolsillo, pero al pasar los años y aunque María sabía comportarse perfectamente en sociedad cada vez estaba más segura de que eso no era lo que ella quería, ya que todo ese mundo le parecía vacío, banal, superfluo.

Pero, como el destino siempre nos sorprende, de manera inesperada el padre de María murió y parte de su patrimonio se vio comprometido en algunos negocios, allí doña Gertrudis presionó de manera fuerte a su hija con el propósito de que aceptara la propuesta de matrimonio de aquel hombre rico, pues de lo contrario las dos quedarían en la ruina y esta señora no se imaginaba trabajando para ganarse el pan.

En un principio el amor por su madre, aun cuando eran tan diferentes, influyó en esta joven y cedió porque su madre sabía cómo manipularla y chantajearla, para salirse con la suya, pero mientras más se acercaba los días de su boda, más sentía que eso no era lo que ella anhelaba, su corazón le decía que sería infeliz para siempre el día que diera ese paso, pues viviría bajo el yugo de lo que la sociedad imponía para ella como mujer, María desde hace mucho veía todo el modelo bajo el que vivía como uno de opresión.

Así el día de su fiesta de compromiso, esta joven mujer hizo algo que nadie esperaba se paró en medio de aquel salón lleno de invitados de las mejores familias y dijo que no se casaría con aquel caballero acaudalado, que ella dedicaría su vida a luchar por los derechos de las mujeres y mientras hablaba ante aquella cantidad de estirados perplejos, se soltó el cabello, se quitó los guantes y al final tiró por el aire un corset y salió corriendo de aquel lugar, desde ese día María se unió a la lucha de muchas otras damas, que fueron dando pasos para que las mujeres de hoy podamos tener libertad, para estudiar, votar, condiciones dignas de trabajo, ejercer profesiones que en algún momento eran exclusivas para hombres entre muchas otras cosas más.

Maria during her childhood received multiple scoldings because she did not sit correctly at the table, did not use the cutlery correctly, or did not learn the stitches of embroidery or cross stitch, when she reached a certain age she was sent to the school for young ladies, because the ambition of every woman is to get a good match to marry, must be wealthy, of good family and fine manners that can give all communities, a house in a good and expensive in a good area, many servants, a dressmaker to make the dresses to the latest fashion, in short to be the fine lady of society.

But this little girl grew up and as reading was allowed in her home and her father was more open-minded and believed that his daughter could be capable of something more, he allowed and planted in her the habit of reading, so Maria devoured every book in the library and her father always brought her some other to nourish her intellect, besides encouraging in her a critical spirit, because this girl always proved to have intelligence, and reading made her grow in intelligence, cunning and further enriched her language in an extraordinary way.

Maria's mother, Doña Gertrudis, often had arguments with her husband, because she wished like any mother of the late nineteenth century to see her daughter engaged to a good man, who could give her all the comforts and in turn increase the family wealth, not only with a good name but also with her pocket, but as the years passed and although Maria knew how to behave perfectly in society she was more and more sure that this was not what she wanted, since that whole world seemed empty, banal, superfluous.

But, as fate always surprises us, Maria's father died unexpectedly and part of his patrimony was compromised in some business dealings, then Doña Gertrudis put strong pressure on her daughter to accept the marriage proposal of that rich man, otherwise they would both be ruined and this lady could not imagine herself working to earn her bread.

At first her love for her mother, even though they were so different, influenced this young woman and she gave in because her mother knew how to manipulate and blackmail her, to get her way, but the closer the days of her wedding came, the more she felt that this was not what she longed for, her heart told her that she would be unhappy forever the day she took that step, because she would live under the yoke of what society imposed on her as a woman, Maria had long seen the whole model under which she lived as one of oppression.

So on the day of her engagement party, this young woman did something that no one expected, she stood in the middle of that room full of guests from the best families and said that she would not marry that wealthy gentleman, that she would dedicate her life to fight for the rights of women and while she spoke before that number of perplexed stiffs, she let her hair down, she took off her gloves and finally threw a corset in the air and ran out of that place, from that day Maria joined the struggle of many other ladies, who were taking steps so that women today can have freedom, to study, vote, decent working conditions, exercise professions that at some point were exclusive to men among many other things.
