The jaguar is the largest feline in America, it was admired and adored by the ancestral Mesoamerican cultures such as the Olmecs, Mayas, Aztecs, as well as the Incas, this beautiful feline, which is the third largest in the world is in danger of extinction in fact already in El Salvador and Uruguay is extinct, Therefore, some programs, funds, organizations and representatives of some Latin American governments have joined together to create "International Jaguar Day", so on November 29th is celebrated its day.

This feline is the so-called "tiger of America", for being the largest that inhabits the continent. Its general appearance is rough and massive; an adult jaguar can measure between 1.12 and 1.85 m long, not including the tail, which ranges between 45 and 75 cm in length, and reaches 60 cm at the withers. The color of its coat varies from yellow to reddish, although it can also be totally black (melanic form). In addition, it presents a characteristic pattern with skin speckled with rosettes, consisting of a circle of black spots surrounding a central light-colored one. The head and body are robust, the jaw is prominent and the limbs are solid and rather short. It is an excellent climber and swimmer. It also makes movements with some frequency, especially in the flood season which in turn causes the movement of its prey and the displacement of this one.

Likewise, their diet is varied, ranging from fish, to deer, even alligators, because unlike other felines, jaguars enjoy the water and are experienced swimmers, besides having a powerful bite and having as another peculiarity that attacks the skull of their victims instead of the neck. They live solitary lives and only meet to mate, then the female alone raises her young and defends them fiercely, the upbringing of these cubs lasts approximately two years, in which the cubs learn everything from their mother.

On the other hand, as already mentioned, the Jaguar is native to America and is currently found mainly in the Amazon and a few specimens in Central America, but in its heyday, inhabited from the southern United States to Patagonia, this gives us an idea of all the territory they have lost.

This last point leads me to touch on a subject, which is none other than the situations that threaten their survival,

Jaguars face a series of threats, including habitat fragmentation and illegal killing. High rates of deforestation in South and Central America - for grazing, agriculture and other uses - have not only destroyed jaguar habitat, but also fragmented it. This means that the cats are confined to certain areas and cannot travel long distances to find mates. Such isolation can lead to inbreeding and local extinctions.

Another threat faced by jaguars are cattle ranchers, who kill them in retaliation. As grazing land replaces forests, jaguars end up hunting cattle. As a result, livestock owners get rid of the jaguars, sometimes without the jaguars ever touching their livestock.

Poaching is another serious problem. The cats have long been hunted for their skins, and illegal international trade in jaguar teeth and jaguar bone products for shipment to China is now on the rise.

Therefore, the International Jaguar Day aims to raise awareness so that people know the threats faced by the jaguar, its fundamental role, its presence gives us the certainty that we are in the presence of a healthy ecosystem, since the jaguar is at the top of the food chain of America, being the largest predator of the entire continent.

El jaguar es el felino de más grande América, fue admirado y adorado por las culturas ancestrales mesoaméricas cono los olmecas, los mayas, aztecas, así como también para los Incas, este hermoso felino, que es el tercero mas grande del mundo está en peligro de extinción de hecho ya en El Salvador y Uruguay esta extinto, así que se hace fundamental su conservación y por ello, algunos programas, fondos, organizaciones y representantes de algunos gobiernos de Latinoamérica se unieron para crear “Día Internacional del Jaguar”, así que los 29 de noviembre se celebra su día.

Ahora bien, como son estos hermosos felinos, pues por acá te lo hago saber:

Este felino es el llamado "tigre de América", por ser el más grande que habita en el continente. Su aspecto general es tosco y macizo; un jaguar adulto puede medir entre 1.12 y 1.85 m de largo, sin incluir la cola, la cual oscila entre 45 y 75 cm de longitud, y alcanza 60 cm a la altura de la cruz. El color de su pelaje varía desde el amarillo hasta el rojizo, aunque también puede ser totalmente negro (forma melánica) además, presenta un dibujo característico con la piel moteada de rosetas, que consisten en un círculo de manchas negras que rodean a otra central de color claro. La cabeza y el cuerpo son robustos, tiene la mandíbula prominente y las extremidades son sólidas y más bien cortas. Es un trepador y nadador excelente. También realiza desplazamientos con cierta frecuencia, sobre todo en la época de inundaciones que provocan a su vez el movimiento de sus presas y el desplazamiento de éste.

Así mismo, su alimentación es variada va desde peces, hasta venados, incluso caimanes, ya que a diferencia de otros felinos, los jaguares disfrutan del agua y son una nadadores experimentados, además de tener una poderosa mordida y teniendo como otra particularidad que ataca el cráneo de sus víctimas en lugar del cuello. Viven vidas solitarias y solo se reúnen para aparearse, luego la hembra cría sola a sus crías y las defiende ferozmente, la crianza de estos cachorros dura aproximadamente dos años, en los que los cachorros aprenden todo de su madre.

Por otra parte, como ya mencione el Jaguar es nativo de América y actualmente se encuatra principalmente en el amazonas y unos pocos ejemplares en América Central, pero es su auge, habitaba desde el sur de Estados Unidos hasta la Patagonia , esto nos da una idea de todo el territorio que han perdido.

Esto último, me lleva a tocar un tema, que no es otro que el de las situaciones que amenazan su supervivencia

Los jaguares enfrentan una serie de amenazas, entre estas, la fragmentación del hábitat y la matanza ilegal. Las altas tasas de deforestación de América del Sur y América Central —para tierras de pastoreo, agricultura y otros usos— no solo han destruido el hábitat de los jaguares, sino que también lo han fragmentado. Esto significa que los felinos quedan circunscritos a determinadas zonas y no pueden recorren grandes distancias para encontrar pareja. Ese tipo de aislamiento puede conducir a la endogamia y extinciones locales

Otra amenaza que enfrentan los jaguares son los ganaderos, quienes los matan en forma de represalia. Como las tierras de pastoreo van reemplazando a los bosques, los jaguares acaban cazando el ganado. Como consecuencia, los dueños del ganado se deshacen de los jaguares, y en ocasiones, sin que estos hayan llegado a tocar su ganado.

La caza furtiva también constituye otro problema grave. Durante mucho tiempo, estos felinos han sido cazados por sus pieles, y en la actualidad, está creciendo el comercio internacional ilegal de dientes de jaguares y productos hechos con hueso de jaguar para enviar a China.

Por consiguiente, el Dia internacional del jaguar tiene como finalidad crear conciencia para que las personas conozcan las amenazas a las que se enfrenta el jaguar, su papel fundamental, su presencia nos da la certeza de que estamos en presencia de un ecosistema saludable, ya que el jaguar está en la cima de la cadena alimenticia de América, siendo el depredador más grande de la todo el continente.

Por último, no puedo dejar de mencionar que de los grandes felinos, este es mi favorito, recuerdo el ejemplar del Zoológico del Parque del Es, para mi maravilloso verlo, pero al mismo tiempo doloroso ya que estaba en un espacio muy pequeño, si has llegado hasta aquí te doy las gracias por leer y espero que conocer un poco más de este hermoso felino, te permita sumarte de alguna manera a su conservación, así me despido deseando leer ya su comentarios.
