The ghost of the mountains (ESP/ENG)
Everyone knows that I love animals, but especially cats and felines in general, I find them all beautiful, but there is one that since I discovered its existence has caught my attention, as it seems to live in a very particular habitat and this makes it have physical characteristics that make it look like a stuffed animal because of its abundant fur and round ears, so I could not help myself to dedicate a publication to it when I saw in the ephemeris that October 23 is celebrated as International Snow Leopard Day.
The beautiful Snow Leopard is in a vulnerable situation, in fact for the year 2014, 7 years ago, it was the large cat that was in most danger of extinction in the world, I do not think that in seven years this has changed, much, although it would be wonderful to have been wrong; As it usually happens and I have already mentioned in previous publications, one of the main dangers and threats for this animal is the man, since they are hunted illegally, although they are protected legally, since there is national legislation that regulates the matter in all the States where they live, the snow leopards are hunted to sell their beautiful fur and many times the farmers hunt them for conflicts with these furry ones.
Snow leopards live in Central Asia, in 12 countries, mainly in China, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia and Mongolia, by 2014 there were between 4000 to 6000 specimens, although its fur is similar to that of its cousin the African leopard, This shy animal thanks to its fur and shyness manages to mimic its habitat in a surprising way, if you have not seen any program or video about it, believe me it is impressive to see how nature achieves this type of relationship, because it is very difficult to see them in the wild, it is called "the ghost of the mountains".
Another factor that is notably affecting the Snow Leopard is climate change, since these furry ones live in quite cold or cool areas in mountains from 3000 meters high, places that have been greatly affected by climate change such as the Himalayas, in addition to the fact that their main prey has decreased significantly.
The gestation period of the snow leopard is 90 to 100 days, after which a litter of three to four cubs weighing 300 to 600 grams is born.
Extremely fragmented populations are found in the remote mountainous areas of Central Asia.
It is estimated that global warming will destroy two-thirds of the habitable space for these mammals in the next 50 years.
Their diet is based on mammal and bird meat, including blue ram or baral (Pseudois nayaur), Siberian ibex (Capra sibirica), marmots and wild boars among others.
Snow leopards are masters of camouflage and are perfectly equipped to live in the mountains.
The natural range of an unmated male could cover a territory of 200 square kilometers.
Snow leopards move to different altitudes according to the summer and winter migrations of their prey animals.
They are largely solitary animals and live in low densities in the mountains at altitudes ranging from 2,000 to over 5,000 meters above sea level.
Their very long and bushy tails have a dual function:
1 First, it allows it to maintain its balance on steep terrain.
2 On the other hand, it also serves to keep its body warm by being wrapped around it in the harsh winter.
Now then, how was this celebration born and what is its objective? The initiative arose from the countries that have the privilege of having this beautiful animal within their reach, because the Snow Leopards have suffered a loss of approximately 20% of its population in the last 20 years and although there are reserves are not large enough for these beautiful cats.
Logically it is good to know what actions are being taken to save these beautiful felines and this is what I found about it:
The Snow Leopard is protected by the national legislations of all the states where this species is geographically located.
It has protected geographic areas, although they are not wide enough for its range of movement.
In 2013, the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP) was created at the initiative of the Government of Kyrgyzstan.
This species is protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Research on this species is being funded by environmental organizations, incorporating the use of camera traps and satellite tracking collars to monitor its activity.
Finally, the recovery and existence of this feline depends largely on the countries in which it lives, but also on you and me, since we can make known of them and the situations that are affecting it with the intention of sensitizing more and more people, so I leave wishing that my publication allows you to admire this feline, to do something to publicize their situation and also to leave me your impressions in the comments box, until a next publication.
