A quick summary of my gaming journey and what's next

Hello Hivers

What games are you playing today?

I want to tell you a short story about how I started to play games and where that event leads me to.

Back then, when I was around 10 years old, my dad brought some video game CDs home. At the time, we did not have Internet yet. Gaming was just offline and I installed some in our PC immediately. The first game I played was Dragon Ball Fighting Z. It was a 2D fighting game that looks just like the show. 1 or 2 years later, I started to use the Internet and played Battle Realms with my younger brothers. We barely took any break while playing games all day long. We only stopped when it was time for bed.

When 3D technology joined the game, I quickly hooked into PUBG and Minecraft. I preferred 3D over 2D at the time because 3D had fantastic graphics along with more realistic freedom of actions I had always longed to experience.

At the point I went to university, I started to focus more on studying instead of gaming. Actually, I didn't have enough time to play games while studying for important college exams. Life was kinda boring when I played no games but I did have more time to join more extracurricular activities. Fast forward to 2016, I got introduced to Pokemon Go and that was when I got my feet wet at AR games. Realism took to a whole new level now, I could go catch Charizard in my college campus. Gamers didn't stay in their rooms all day anymore. They could go outside, took some fresh air and were still able to enjoy playing games.

The downside of gaming

Of course if you ever play games, you will hear all kinds of complaints from your parents and teachers. They said gaming was addictive and it would prevent you from studying and working properly. It's not hard to find articles on how harmful gaming is to your mental and physical health. Below is one short paragraph from Georgia State Signal.

"If you spend too much time playing video games you could develop a gaming disorder. ... A comprehensive study from the Journal of Health Psychology shows that gaming disorders are linked to greater levels of loneliness, anxiety, depression, sleeping problems, social problems and many other psychological-social problems. " Georgia State Signal | By Daniel Varitek

I played games since I was a kid, I got addicted at some point but I still studied well and was a good student. However, I had to admit that spending too much time on games really made me feel unwell even when I was young. My younger brother played with me and he didn't study enough besides playing. As a result, his performance at school got worse over time.

The parents must provide a proper discipline to their kids over the amount of time the kids can spend playing games. Too much gaming is bad but playing games for an appropriate amount of time per day still has its own upsides.

The upside of gaming

Most games require a certain level of attention. It stimulates your senses in certain ways that real life might not be able to stimulate. I learned planning and problem solving through strategy games such as Battle Realms and League of Legends. It did help improve my decision-making skills in important events of my life. I knew what skills I should have practiced when I planned to apply for a specific job. Planning out my steps is a valuable skill I learned from days playing those strategy games.

I have always been intrigued by the beautiful graphics and amazing code of the games I play. I started to question how the companies made the games so addictive. I wanted to make new games at some point but I didn't have the courage to pursue my dream. I was so busy with my work and family that I was afraid I wouldn't have enough time to make games. One day, I started to learn Blender and Unity. I promised it was just a hobby at that time. I spent little time on learning those skills but day after day I got better while still having time for my family and 9-5 job.

The good news

I have been building a game on my own for a while. The game is nearly finished and ready to be launched soon. The dream of every game maker is to entertain the players. I really hope my game can relieve other people's stress and worries. An interesting game will be a great solution to enjoy yourself in the times of pandemic.

Thanks for reading my post. Wish you happy time playing games. 🎮

The whole "gaming makes you useless" argument is quite funny to me. I heard this all the time growing up. Coincidentally I am the first gamer in my family and also the first one to get a formal education and a degree. Take that haters!
