I love the title for this week 46 edition 2 which is -

Free Higher Education

*We all know that this is something everyone wishes for.

Yes, everyone wished that education is a free thing that anyone can just come in to study without having to pay school fees and buying of text books. But very unfortunate, we only hear of it but don't get to see it being put into practice.

To be honest with you, I have once enjoyed free high education. In fact that is the reason why I am in school today. Because when I first thought of going back to school I knew that it was not going to be easy for me to be in school at the same time with my kids in school. So, what I did was to go to a government secondary school because I heard that it was meant to be free. Luckily for me I only have to pay #3000 for a start and then that will be all. I was so surprised that I don't have to be paying school fees every term. I will only have to bother about the kids school fees.

But do you think it is possible?

But today is no longer like that. Secondly schools that belongs to the government is said to be free, but the students still pay PTA levies every term. Which amount to thousands. This is what we have around us now- #9700 for a start, then #2500 every term which is not bad, but the government meant it to be free. And it is sopposed to be free for everyone.

*What do you think will be the effect of making education free for all? *

Well, if education is free it will be a great encouragement for everyone who don't have the means to pay school fees and as a result have dropped out of school.
Another effect is that we will have our parents live longer. Most parents die young because of the too much responsibilities pilled up for them. But when school fees which stands to be the major among others is removed, then it will be a great relief for them.

Thirdly, the rate of illiteracy will be reduced. A lot are still illiterate today because they don't have means of going to school.

And how will that affect the standards of teaching?

Truth be told, is not just to say that education is free without having a hand full of teachers to teach the children. If education will be free, then there must be enough teachers to teach. When everyone begins to go to school because it is free and the teachers are few, then the standard will be reduced in the sense that the students will be too much for the teacher to handle. So, it will still be at the detriment of the students because they can't get much from their teachers. Just like when I was in that secondary school because it was free. We had a hundred plus students in the class.

In summary, if education must be free, then every thing necessary to make it work properly should be put in place by the government. If it will not be possible for the government to:-
✍️ Employ enough teachers
✍️ Pay teachers at the right time
✍️ Build enough classrooms
✍️ Provide enough reading materials
✍️ Give the teachers enough seminary
✍️ Supervise every teacher to make sure that they are doing their job. etc then let
there be no free education because it is not worth it.

Thanks for reading.

God bless you as you do that.

I love the end part of this article where you buttress the point of the things needed to be put in place by the government. I wouid have said free education with all these would something else. I never enjoyed free education. Private schools and federal university.

I just heard there is even a recent increase in the fees of federal universities.
