Continuing with the Berserk adaptations, today I bring you this second "saga" that has been animated from the original work of the late Kentaro Miura. It is trilogy and is a relatively short and simple to digest story, but it covers practically the same as the first adaptation which I talked about in the previous post (Go to Berserk '97), it is composed of three movies of about an hour and a half each, so if you don't have time to watch the 25 episodes of the 1997 series, with these three movies you get to watch practically the same thing. As I told you in the previous post Berserk is a dark fantasy series with medieval touches. It is aimed at an adult audience as it contains a lot of violence, explicit sexuality and even gore.

Guts is a warrior who possesses a great fighting spirit, as well as an enviable skill with the sword, these characteristics make him stand out in the eyes of Griffith an egocentric and attractive mercenary leader, who invites him to join his group: the Band of the Hawk. With his new companions Guts gets everything he was looking for, great battles, huge rewards and of course, a family. But, unfortunately for our protagonist, all men are victims of causality and there will be no way for him or his new companions to escape their fate.

Well friends, it's time to talk about the second adaptation of this fantastic story, as I mentioned before this one covers what is known as the "Golden Age Arc", that is, it begins with the arrival of Guts to the Band of the Hawk and culminates with the much talked about Eclipse. The first time I saw this adaptation I liked it quite a lot, but then I saw it a second time to detail it a little better and honestly it changed my perception, I felt that many details were omitted. On this occasion I am not going to describe the characters as I think it would be repeating too much of the previous publication, since the story is literally the same.

The first movie of this adaptation is called: Berserk - The Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the King, here we do not have a preview to the future of the protagonist, unlike the previous adaptation, so the first thing we see is a very young Guts in the middle of a battle in which he stands out for his skills with the great sword, while he is seen by the Band and of course by Griffith, who later test him to see if he is really strong or it was just a matter of luck, but seeing that Guts surpassed the strength of his warriors, Griffith is forced to intervene and finally manages to put a stop to it, and then commit him to join the Band.

These events are presented to us practically the same as in the '97 adaptation, however, in this one they show even less of Guts' past, this is something that I really didn't like, I think one of the most interesting things about the character is how, despite his past, he manages to stand up for himself. I understand that many may find the violence and abuse that occurred in Guts' childhood a bit shocking, but unfortunately it is something that happens both in the original work and in real life and it seems to me that, although it is a very used resource in Bersek, Miura treats it as one of the lowest and most perverse things that human beings can commit, having downplayed those facts I think it also detracts from the depth of Guts' character.

As the movie progressed I realized that this was definitely not going to be my favorite adaptation, everything happens too fast, they hardly show the coexistence of the Band or their first battles, things that are necessary to understand the importance of his companions in Guts' life, also to empathize and get attached to them.

Just as they cut moments with the Band, of course they also did it with the Griffith-Guts relationship, one of the moments that I really don't understand how they could remove was when Griffith shows Guts the Beherit. As I told you in the previous post the Beherit I think is the most transcendental element in the story and here I feel that instead of addressing more in depth its importance, they cut quite a bit of the explanation of this object, it is something I didn't understand because also the title of the movie is directly related to it, since the Beherit that Griffith possesses is known as "The Egg of the King ". The only time they talk about it is during the battle against Zodd the Immortal, which I thought they adapted quite well and for my taste was the best part of this movie.

During the last minutes we can see one of the most difficult moments for the protagonist and in which we begin to become disenchanted with Griffith's image, it is something really hard and transcendental for the story, I find this part so frustrating and sad because we can see how Guts is completely disappointed with who he considered his best friend.

The second movie is called Berserk - The Golden Age Arc II - The Battle for Doldrey and it is precisely about that, it is an almost completely warlike plot with political overtones, which focuses on the recovery of Doldrey by the Band of the Hawk. Despite being set during a war, it has one of my favorite moments between Guts and Casca, his partner and only woman in the Band, in which we can see for the first time an intimate rapprochement between them and a much kinder and more human side of these two characters. Something that I liked a lot about this adaptation, although they reduced the scenes between Guts and Griffith, they knew how to maintain and represent very well the relationship between Guts and Casca, which has a lot of relevance in the story later on.

Something that I definitely did not like was that they removed many details of the battle, including things from Griffith's past that I think are important to understand the motives of the character, because like Guts is a very complex and nuanced character. The best of this movie, for me, are the moments of the main battle, which is quite epic and shows us the great military mind that Griffith possesses and how much he "trusts " in his band (yes, trusts in quotation marks). Here we see how they and especially their leader, reach their highest point of power and recognition, however, the film closes with a radical change in the story and we see how things begin to collapse like a house of cards for everyone.

From my point of view, this film brings the first strong changes for the characters, especially for Guts, Casca and Griffith. The former makes a momentous decision that affects the rest of the gang, while Casca realizes that something in her has changed with respect to the way she sees Griffith and Guts, and finally the leader of the Falcons completely loses his mind and makes one of the worst mistakes of his life. In this part, I would have liked them to go a little deeper into Guts' motives for making his decision since everything was too superficial and they omitted a scene that is beautiful and emblematic both in the manga and in the previous adaptation and that gives us enough context about what the character is feeling at that moment, on the other hand, I think they improved a lot the approach to Griffith's mistake because unlike the '97 series, here it is better understood what dragged him to it, I think this issue is one of those that the Berserk fandom refuses to accept and I hope that before the story ends in the manga, they confirm Griffith's sexuality once and for all.

There was something I didn't like at all that they left out in this movie and that is that when the Band of the Hawk achieves high recognition, the nobles of the court decide to put together a strategy to destroy them, this is quite an interesting part of the story and that shows how a bit of the reality of our world manages to sneak into the fantasy of Berserk, I found it a pity that they didn't add it because it is one of my favorite parts of the conflict in Midland, which is present in the adaptation before this one, although to be honest these facts don't change the story too much, they simply nourish it with details.

The last movie is called Berserk - The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent, this is the most chaotic part of the whole adaptation, here we find everything and when I say this, I am not exaggerating, there is romance, military strategy, fights, gore, monsters and sex. All that, makes it my favorite movie of the three hahaha, besides being the longest, here I won't go too deep into what happens because everything is SPOILER. I'll just say that the events that happen in this movie completely change the Band and even the whole world.

Despite being the part that I enjoy the most I also think it is the part where I suffer the most, I really liked how they adapted the story as they made it extremely explicit which I think is completely necessary when depicting the Eclipse. This is the strongest point of these movies compared to the previous adaptation, I really liked how they introduced some characters that are very important for the story from this point on, they did it in a majestic way, just as they deserve it, something that does not happen in the '97 series.

They also give us a much more adequate closure than in the previous adaptation, since they show us the consequences of the Eclipse and the world after this event, this was one of the things that I didn't like how they handled in the other adaptation. They also managed to include the character that for me is the most "incredible" of all, I will not say that he is my favorite, because that is definitely Guts, but the Skull Knight is certainly emblematic of Berserk and I thought it was a shame that in the previous adaptation his participation was so scarce, here they correct that mistake and he appears in several very important occasions.

As I said before, if you don't have time to watch the '97 series, start by watching these movies and if you like the story and want to complement it, then watch the series as well, you don't lose because the plot is really good. Of course, go with an open mind because there are some pretty strong scenes.

Although it had many cuts, they also managed to integrate scenes that are important and did not appear in the previous adaptation (that's why I tell you to watch both, they complement each other), as well as giving more presence to the Skull Knight, which I think is a very important character. Another detail that I loved is that in the second movie they make a "cameo" of two characters that will appear later in the story, I thought it was great that they included them since in the manga the characters comment that they were in that party in which they appear in these movies. Another character that makes some little appearances is Puck, the fairy that accompanies Guts in the events of the future, it is the first time I saw it animated and I loved it, I think it was a gift for all the fans of the manga. Also the presentation of "The Hand " during the Eclipse seemed to me to give an even more epic touch to the whole scene.

The music in general was an incredible improvement in this adaptation, they left behind the pop songs and introduced a quite epic opening that reminded me of the intro of Game of Thrones, in this aspect I also want to highlight the work of the Seiyū (voice actors), it seems to me that it was a great improvement over the '97 series, which actually wasn't bad, just this one seemed infinitely better to me.

In general, something that in my opinion changed a lot this adaptation, was that it lost a little fear of censorship and showed many scenes in a more explicit way than in the '97 series, I know that many people disliked this but to me it seemed adequate, taking into account that the source material is quite explicit and cruel.

Another thing I feel they did very well here was that they focused a little more on the Guts-Casca relationship than on the Guts-Griffith one, something I appreciate because it's a much nicer story and it helps to understand the future of these characters a little better, especially Guts'.

Definitely, the animation was the weakest point in this adaptation, at times it was very good, but there were moments when it looked like a poorly made video game, here I really missed the animation of the old series, which may seem outdated to some, but it was much better done than this one.

On the other hand, for my taste, they cut too many elements, I did a count more or less of the length of the movies and in total the three would amount to 13 episodes of 21 minutes each, if we compare this with the 25 episodes of the first adaptation it is impossible to think that they could make the story more complete than the first one, in which they already eliminated quite a few things. Here too much of the characters' past was missing, which for me is a key piece to understand the motivations behind their actions, since as I mentioned before they are characters with a higher level of complexity than the average anime character.

Overall it is not a bad adaptation, the three movies are quite entertaining, I just feel that it is too short, as I said in the previous review, this and the first one are just a taste of what Berserk really is.

Unfortunately, this is the last adaptation of this part of the story, which left me with a rather bittersweet feeling because I felt that neither of the two did justice one hundred percent to the original work, maybe watching the two you can get a better idea of the story, but still I think it's not enough, I hope that in the future they will be able to adapt this part better, it is my dream that MAPPA (Shingeki no Kyojin), Wit studio (Vindland Saga) or Ufotable (Kimetsu no Yaiba) make an adaptation of Berserk, seeing the work they have done with those series I feel that at least in the production and animation section they would do something pretty decent.

I know I'm going to sound like a preacher or a broken record, but if you get a chance, watch this series, even though it's not a hundred percent adapted, it's still a gem that surpasses many other anime.

Continuamos con las adaptaciones de Berserk, hoy les traigo esta segunda "saga" que se ha animado del trabajo original del difunto Kentaro Miura. Es una trilogía bastante sencilla de digerir, pero que abarca prácticamente lo mismo que la primera adaptación de la cual hablé en la publicación anterior (Ir a Berserk '97), está compuesta por tres películas de aproximadamente hora y media cada una, así que si no tienes tiempo para ver los 25 episodios de la serie de 1997, con estas tres películas te enteras de prácticamente lo mismo. Como les comenté en la publicación anterior Berserk es una serie de fantasía oscura con toques medievales. Está dirigida a una audiencia adulta ya que contiene mucha violencia, sexualidad explícita e incluso gore.

Guts es un guerrero que posee un gran espíritu de combate, así como también una envidiable habilidad con la espada, estas características lo hacen destacar ante los ojos de Griffith un egocéntrico y atractivo líder mercenario, quien lo invita a unirse a su grupo: la Banda del Halcón. Con sus nuevos compañeros Guts consigue todo lo que buscaba, grandes batallas, cuantiosas recompensas y por supuesto, una familia. Pero, para desgracia de nuestro protagonista, todos los hombres son víctimas de la causalidad y no habrá manera de que ni él ni sus nuevos compañeros escapen de su destino.

Bueno amigos, llegó el momento de hablar sobre la segunda adaptación de esta fantástica historia, como les comenté anteriormente ésta abarca lo que se conoce como el "Golden Age Arc", es decir, empieza con la llegada de Guts a la Banda del Halcón y culmina con el tan comentado Eclipse. La primera vez que vi esta adaptación me gustó bastante, pero después la vi por segunda vez para detallarla un poco mejor y honestamente cambió un poco mi percepción, sentí que se omitieron muchos detalles. En esta ocasión no voy a hacer descripción de los personajes ya que pienso que sería repetir demasiado de lo de la publicación anterior, ya que la historia es literalmente la misma.

La primera película de esta adaptación lleva por nombre: Berserk - The Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the King, aquí no tenemos una vista previa al futuro del protagonista, a diferencia de la adaptación anterior, por lo cual lo primero que vemos es a un Guts muy joven en medio de una batalla en la cual destaca por sus habilidades con la gran espada, mientras es visto por la Banda y por supuesto por Griffith, quienes tiempo después lo ponen a prueba para ver si es verdaderamente fuerte o solo fue cuestión de suerte, pero al ver que Guts sobrepasaba la fuerza de sus guerreros, Griffith se ve forzado a intervenir y finalmente logra ponerle un alto, para después comprometerlo a unirse a la banda.

Estos hechos nos los presentan prácticamente igual que en la adaptación del '97, sin embargo, en esta muestran aún menos del pasado de Guts, esto es algo que de verdad no me gustó, creo que una de las cosas más interesantes del personaje es como, a pesar de su pasado, logra mantenerse en pie. Entiendo que a muchos les pueda parecer un poco chocante la violencia y los abusos ocurridos en la niñez de Guts, pero lamentablemente es algo que sucede tanto en la obra original como en la vida real y me parece que, a pesar de que es un recurso muy usado en Bersek, Miura lo trata como una de las cosas más bajas y perversas que pueda cometer el ser humano, el haberle restado importancia a esos hechos creo que también le resta profundidad al personaje de Guts.

A medida que la película avanzaba me fui dando cuenta de que definitivamente esta no iba a ser mi adaptación favorita, todo sucede demasiado rápido, casi no muestran la convivencia de la Banda ni sus primeras batallas, cosas que son necesarias para ir entendiendo la importancia que cobran sus compañeros en la vida de Guts, también para empatizar y encariñarnos con ellos.

Así como recortaron momentos con la Banda, por supuesto que también lo hicieron con la relación Griffith-Guts, uno de los momentos que de verdad no entiendo cómo pudieron quitar fue cuando Griffith le muestra a Guts el Beherit. Como les comenté en la publicación anterior el Beherit creo que es el elemento más trascendental en la historia y aquí siento que en lugar de abordar más a profundidad su importancia, recortaron bastante de la explicación de este objeto, es algo que no entendí porque además el título de la película está relacionado directamente con él, ya que el Beherit que posee Griffith es conocido como "El huevo del Rey" o "The Egg of the King". El único momento en el que hablan sobre él es durante la batalla contra Zodd el Inmortal, la cual me pareció que adaptaron bastante bien y para mi gusto fue lo mejor de esta película.

Durante los últimos minutos podemos ver uno de los momentos más difíciles para el protagonista y en el cual comenzamos a desencantarnos de la imagen de Griffith, es algo verdaderamente duro y trascendental para la historia, esta parte me parece tan frustrante y triste porque podemos ver como Guts se decepciona por completo de quien consideraba su mejor amigo.

La segunda película lleva por nombre Berserk - The Golden Age Arc II - The Battle for Doldrey y precisamente trata sobre eso, es una trama casi completamente bélica con tintes políticos, que se centra en la recuperación de Doldrey por parte de la Banda del Halcón. A pesar de estar situada durante una guerra, tiene uno de mis momentos favoritos entre Guts y Casca, su compañera y única mujer de la Banda, en el cual podemos ver por primera vez un acercamiento íntimo entre ellos y un lado mucho más amable y humano de estos dos personajes. Eso algo que me gustó bastante de esta adaptación, si bien redujeron las escenas entre Guts y Griffith, supieron mantener y representar muy bien la relación de Guts y Casca la cual tiene bastante relevancia en la historia más adelante.

Algo que definitivamente no me gustó fue que quitaron muchos detalles de la batalla, entre ellos cosas del pasado de Griffith que me parecen importantes para comprender los motivos del personaje, ya que al igual que Guts es un personaje bastante complejo y lleno de matices. Lo mejor de esta película, para mí, son los momentos de la batalla principal, la cual es bastante épica y nos demuestra la gran mente militar que posee Griffith y lo mucho que "confía" en su banda (sí, confía entre comillas). Aquí vemos como ellos y sobre todo su líder, llegan a su punto más alto de poder y de reconocimiento, sin embargo, la película cierra con un cambio radical en la historia y vemos como las cosas se comienzan a derrumbar cual castillo de naipes para todos.

Desde mi punto de vista, esta película trae los primeros cambios fuertes para los personajes, sobre todo para Guts, Casca y Griffith. El primero toma una decisión trascendental que afecta al resto de la banda, mientras que Casca se da cuenta de que algo en ella ha cambiado con respecto a la forma en la que ve a Griffith y Guts, por último el líder de los Halcones pierde por completo la cabeza y comete uno de los peores errores de su vida. En esta parte, me hubiera gustado que profundizaran un poco más en los motivos de Guts para tomar su decisión ya que todo fue demasiado superficial y omitieron una escena que es hermosa y emblemática tanto en el manga como en la adaptación anterior y que nos da bastante contexto sobre lo que está sintiendo el personaje en ese momento, por otra aparte, me parce que mejoraron mucho el enfoque del error de Griffith porque a diferencia de la serie del '97 acá se entiende mejor lo que lo arrastró a ello, creo que este tema es uno de los que más se niega a aceptar el fandom de Berserk y espero que antes de que la historia acabe en el manga, nos confirmen de una vez la sexualidad de Griffith.

Hubo algo que no me gustó para nada que obviaran en esta película y es que cuando la Banda del Halcón logra un alto reconocimiento, los nobles de la corte deciden armar una estrategia para destruirlos, esta es una parte bastante interesante de la historia y que demuestra como un poco de la realidad de nuestro mundo logra colarse en la fantasía de Berserk, me pareció una pena que no lo agregaran porque es de mis partes favoritas del conflicto en Midland, la cual sí está presente en la adaptación anterior a esta, aunque para ser sincera estos hechos no cambian demasiado la historia, simplemente la nutren de detalles.

La última película es llamada Berserk - The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent, esta es la parte más caótica de toda la adaptación, aquí encontramos de todo y cuando les digo esto, no estoy exagerando, hay romance, estrategia militar, peleas, gore, monstruos y sexo. Todo eso la hace mi película favorita de las tres jajaja, además de ser la más larga, aquí no voy a profundizar mucho en lo que pasa porque todo es SPOILER. Sólo diré que los hechos que suceden en esta película cambian por completo a la Banda e incluso al mundo entero.

A pesar de ser la parte que más disfruto también creo que es en la que más sufro, me gustó mucho como adaptaron la historia ya que lo hicieron de forma sumamente explícita lo cual creo que es completamente necesario al momento de representar el Eclipse. Esta parte es el punto más fuerte de estas películas en comparación con la adaptación anterior, me gustó mucho como introdujeron a unos personajes que son importantísimos para la historia a partir de este punto, lo hicieron de forma majestuosa, tal y como se lo merecen, cosa que no sucede en la serie del '97.

También nos brindan un cierre bastante más adecuado que en la adaptación anterior, ya que nos muestran las consecuencias del Eclipse y al mundo después de este acontecimiento, esto fue una de las cosas que no me gustó como manejaron en la otra adaptación. Además lograron de incluir al personaje que para mí es el más "increíble" de todos, no voy a decir que es mi favorito, porque ese definitivamente es Guts, pero el Caballero de la Calavera sin duda es emblemático de Berserk y me pareció una pena que en la adaptación anterior su participación fuera tan escasa, acá corrigen ese error y aparece en varias ocasiones muy importantes.

Como les comenté anteriormente, si no tienen tiempo de ver la serie del '97 empiecen viendo estas películas y si al final les gustó la historia y la quieren complementar entonces vean también la serie, en realidad no tiene pierde porque la trama es realmente buena. Eso sí, vayan con una mentalidad abierta porque hay escenas bastante fuertes.

A pesar de que tuvo muchos recortes también lograron integrar escenas que son importantes y que en la adaptación anterior no aparecieron (por eso les digo que vean las dos, se complementan), así como también le dieron más presencia al Caballero de la Calavera, el cual me parece un personaje muy importante. Otro detalle que me encantó es que en la segunda película hacen un "cameo" dos personajes que aparecerán más tarde en la historia, me pareció genial que los incluyeran ya que en el manga ellos comentan que estuvieron en ese festejo en el cual aparecen en estas películas. Otro personaje que hace unas pequeñas es *Puck, el hada que acompaña a Guts en los acontecimientos del futuro, es la primera vez que lo vi animado y me encantó me parece que fue un regalo para todos los fans del manga. También la presentación de "La mano" durante el Eclipse me parece que le dio un toque aún más épico a toda la escena.

La música en general fue una mejora increíble en esta adaptación, dejaron atrás las canciones pop e introdujeron un opening bastante épico que me recordó a la intro de Game of Thrones, en este aspecto quiero destacar también el trabajo de los Seiyū (actores de doblaje), me parece que fue una gran mejora con respecto a la serie del '97, que en realidad no fue malo, simplemente este me pareció infinitamente mejor.

En general, algo que a mi parecer cambió bastante esta adaptación, fue que le perdió un poco el miedo a la censura y mostraron muchas escenas de manera más explícita que en la serie del '97, se que a muchos les disgustó esto pero a mí me pareció adecuado tomando en cuenta que el material de origen es bastante explícito y cruel.

Otra de las cosas que siento que aquí hicieron muy bien fue que se enfocaron un poco más en la relación Guts-Casca que en la de Guts-Griffith, algo que agradezco porque es una historia mucho más linda y que ayuda a entender un poco mejor el futuro de estos personajes, sobre todo el de Guts.

Definitivamente, la animación fue un elemento demasiado flojo en esta adaptación, a veces estaba muy bien, pero habían momentos en los que parecía un videojuego mal hecho, aquí sí que extrañé la animación de la serie viejita, que quizás podrá parecer anticuada para algunos, pero estaba mucho mejor hecha que esta.

Por otra parte, para mi gusto, cortaron demasiados elementos, hice una cuenta más o menos de la duración de las películas y en total las tres equivaldrían a 13 episodios de 21 minutos cada uno, si comparamos esto con los 25 episodios de la primera adaptación es imposible pensar que podrían hacer la historia más completa que la primera, en la que ya de por sí eliminaron bastantes cosas. Aquí faltó demasiado del pasado de los personajes, que para mí es es pieza clave para entender las motivaciones detrás de sus acciones, ya que como les he comentado anteriormente son personajes con un nivel de complejidad superior a la del personaje de anime promedio.

En líneas generales no es una mala adaptación, las tres películas son bastante entretenidas, simplemente siento que es demasiado corta, como dije en la reseña anterior, esta y la primera son solo un abrebocas a lo que en realidad es Berserk.

Lamentablemente, esta es la última adaptación de esta parte de la historia, lo cual me dejó con una sensación bastante agridulce porque sentí que ninguna de las dos le hizo justicia cien por ciento a la obra original, quizás viendo las dos se puede tener una mejor idea de la historia, pero aún así creo que no es suficiente, ojalá que a futuro se animen a adaptar nuevamente esta parte, es mi sueño que MAPPA (Shingeki no Kyojin), Wit studio (Vindland Saga) o Ufotable (Kimetsu no Yaiba) hagan una adaptación de Berserk, viendo el trabajo que han hecho con esas series siento que por lo menos en el apartado de la producción y animación harían algo bastante decente.

Yo se que voy a sonar como predicadora o como disco rallado, pero si tienen la oportunidad vean esta serie, a pesar de no estar cien por ciento adaptada sigue siendo una joya que supera a muchos otros animes.
