How far is a teenager capable of going to keep his or her "image" intact in front of friends and acquaintances?

This is the premise of Red Rose, a Netflix miniseries that in just eight episodes introduces us to the life of a group of "misfit" friends, who begin to see how one after another begins to be harassed by a mysterious application called Red Rose, which is like a virus that gets into their lives and controls everything that has access to the internet, exposing their most intimate and embarrassing moments on social networks in order to bring them to the brink of suicide.

With a theme that seems to come out of an episode of Black Mirror, this thriller takes us to the edge of the mystery and chapter after chapter envelops us in an atmosphere of unease and concern for the welfare of our group of young protagonists. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of teen dramas lately, however, the things that happen in Red Rose are so murky and intriguing that they made me overlook the immaturity of the main characters. There were many moments when I just wanted answers, which led me to watch chapter after chapter until I got them.

Mystery from beginning to end

Undoubtedly, what reigns in this series is the feeling of not understanding absolutely nothing of what is happening. At first it might seem like paranormal happenings, then that it's just a joke, but the stark reality we face in the final episodes is capable of surprising anyone, or well, at least I didn't expect everything that ended up turning out to be Red Rose.

I loved that they knew how to slowly reveal the mystery of what was going on. The clues they leave us in each chapter are scarce, however, they do give us the opportunity to make our own guesses about the origin of the application, most of course are wrong, but the reality surrounding Red Rose is so ugly that you have to think very badly to come up with it. Even at the end of the series they leave the door open to a bigger and even murkier mystery.

Human nature

There are two things that drive everything in the story, need and cruelty. Unfortunately, when there is someone who needs something deeply, it is very likely that they will find someone who will take advantage of that to satisfy their own instincts of cruelty. That is precisely what happens to the young people in this series, especially to two girls, who lose something very precious to them and the desire to get it back makes them the perfect target for Red Rose's perversions and harassment.

It is sad to see such a strong reality reflected, although the series is a complete fiction, the reality is that similar cases occur day after day in our society. There is need everywhere and there will always be predators waiting to take advantage of someone else's need. That detail gives a touch of reality and harshness to a series that at first glance might seem like a simple teen drama, but ends up being something much more.

An ideal ensemble

Something that I found quite outstanding in Red Rose was its characters, that's why I didn't want to miss the opportunity to talk about them. The young people do a great job in reflecting all the typical problems of that age, which perhaps as adults we may come to consider that they are somewhat silly, however, in the series are treated so realistically that it is easy to remember those years and empathize with each of them.

At the same time we also have the adults, who although they have a much more secondary role than the young people, there also comes a point where they acquire some relevance in the events. I was able to understand them a little better, both their motivations and their reactions, although there was something that surprised me and made me have a kind of culture shock, since the upbringing they have with their children is quite different from what I have seen and experienced in Latin America, there is much more trust, freedom and communication. It was something that I loved to see and that as a mother I hope to apply with my own child.

Overall, it is a very entertaining series, which I managed to enjoy quite a lot and despite the little free time I have to watch TV, it only took me two days to finish it because I couldn't stop watching it, so I definitely recommend it. Hoy en día los teléfonos inteligentes y las redes sociales se han convertido en algo indispensable para prácticamente todos los que tenemos acceso a ellos, pero sobre todo entre los jóvenes y adolescentes han cobrado gran relevancia. El problema viene cuando personas mal intencionadas usan estas herramientas para divertirse abusando de los más vulnerables.

¿Hasta dónde es capaz de llegar un adolescente para mantener su "imagen" intacta ante sus amigos y conocidos?.

Esta es la premisa de Red Rose, una miniserie de Netflix que en tan solo ocho episodios nos introduce en la vida de un grupo de amigos "desadaptados", quienes empiezan a ver como uno tras otro comienza a ser acosado por una aplicación misteriosa llamada Red Rose, la cual es como un virus que se mete en sus vidas y controla todo lo que tenga acceso a internet, exponiendo sus momentos más íntimos y bochornosos en redes sociales con el fin de llevarlos al borde del suicidio.

Con una temática que parece salida de un capítulo de Black Mirror, este thriller nos lleva al borde del misterio y capítulo tras capítulo nos envuelve en una atmósfera de intranquilidad y preocupación por el bienestar nuestro grupo de jóvenes protagonistas. Siendo sincera, últimamente no soy muy amiga de los dramas adolescentes, sin embargo, las cosas que suceden en Red Rose son tan turbias e intrigantes que me hicieron pasar por alto la inmadurez de los protagonistas. Hubo muchos momentos en los que solamente quería respuestas, lo cual me llevó a ver un capítulo tras otro hasta obtenerlas.

Misterio de principio a fin

Sin duda, lo que reina en esta serie es la sensación de no entender absolutamente nada de lo que está pasando. Al principio podría parecer que son sucesos paranormales, luego que es simplemente una broma, pero la cruda realidad a la que nos enfrentamos en los episodios finales es capaz de sorprender a cualquiera, o bueno, por lo menos yo no me esperaba todo lo que terminó resultando ser Red Rose.

Me encantó que supieron ir revelando poco a poco el misterio de lo que estaba sucediendo. Las pistas que nos dejan en cada capítulo son escasas, sin embargo, sí nos dan la oportunidad de hacer nuestras propias conjeturas sobre el origen de la aplicación, la mayoría por supuesto que son erróneas, pero es que la realidad que envuelve a Red Rose es tan fea que hay que pensar muy mal para dar con ella. Incluso al finalizar la serie nos dejan abierta la puerta a un misterio más grande y aún más turbio.

La naturaleza humana

Hay dos cosas que mueven todo en la historia, la necesidad y la crueldad. Lamentablemente, cuando hay alguien que necesita algo profundamente, es muy probable que encuentre a alguien que se aproveche de eso para satisfacer sus propios instintos de crueldad. Eso es precisamente lo que le pasa a los jóvenes de esta serie, sobre todo a dos chicas, quienes pierden algo muy preciado para ellas y el deseo de recuperarlo las hace el objetivo perfecto para las perversiones y el acoso de Red Rose.

Es triste ver reflejada una realidad tan fuerte, si bien la serie es una completa ficción, la realidad es que casos similares se dan día tras día en nuestra sociedad. Necesidad hay en todos lados y siempre habrá depredadores esperando aprovecharse de la necesidad de otro. Ese detalle le da un toque de realidad y dureza a una serie que de buenas a primeras podría parecer un simple drama adolescente, pero que termina siendo algo mucho más.

Un ensamble ideal

Algo que me pareció bastante sobresaliente de Red Rose fueron sus personajes, por eso no quise perder la oportunidad de hablar de ellos. Los jóvenes hacen un trabajo estupendo al reflejar todos los problemas típicos de esa edad, que quizás como adultos podemos llegar a considerar que son algo tontos, sin embargo, en la serie son tratados de forma tan real que es fácil rememorar esos años y empatizar con cada uno de ellos.

A la par también tenemos a los adultos, que si bien tienen un papel mucho más secundario que los jóvenes, también llega un punto en el que adquieren cierta relevancia en los acontecimientos. A ellos pude entenderlos un poco mejor, tanto sus motivaciones como sus reacciones, aunque hubo algo que me sorprendió y me hizo tener una especie de choque cultural, ya que la crianza que llevan con sus hijos es bastante diferente a la que he podido ver y vivir en Latinoamérica, hay mucha más confianza, libertad y comunicación. Fue algo que me encantó ver y que como madre espero aplicar con mi propio hijo.

En general, es una serie muy entretenida, que logré disfrutar bastante y que a pesar del poco tiempo libre que tengo para ver TV, solamente me llevó dos días terminarla porque no podía parar de verla, así que definitivamente la recomiendo. Si se animan a verla, los ocho episodios se encuentran disponibles en Netflix.
