Good day, fellow hivers, welcome to my blog. I carried out my cleaning activity for the day. Today I moved around the community to pick up some pollutants. I noticed that people throw away used batteries indiscriminately into the environment. But batteries are not environmentally friendly.

A clean and healthy environment is one of the ways we can connect to nature. Humans are drawn to a clean and healthy environment because it improves health and appearance. It rejuvenates and even generates income from tourism. But when the environment is constantly polluted and waste is indiscriminately disposed of, it promotes disease development, destabilizes the ecosystem, and repels people.

Household batteries, like those in your remote controls and flashlights, are more than just power sources; they're also environmental hazards if not disposed of properly.
It contains Cadmium, A metallic element that occurs in small amounts in air, water, soil, and food. It is a by-product of zinc refining and is used to make batteries, pigments, plastics, alloys, and electroplate. found in rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, this metal can cause kidney damage and other health issues.

Batteries also contain mercury often used in button cell batteries, mercury can damage the nervous system and kidneys. Also, Lead used in car batteries and some older household batteries, lead can affect brain development and cause other serious health problems.

When batteries are thrown into landfills, their casings eventually corrode. This leads to the leakage of these toxic metals into the soil and, subsequently, into underground water. Contaminated underground water can affect wildlife, plants, and even humans.

Let's opt for batteries with fewer toxic elements, like lithium-ion, when possible. By taking these steps, we not only protect the environment but also contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.
