Painting a Portrait of My Daughter: Process and Result (Eng-Sp)

Sometimes, things take an unexpected turn, and we find ourselves forced to confront the fear of the new. Although it may seem like we have everything under control, clinging to the old and familiar can be tempting. However, in this post, I want to share a different experience that goes beyond that.

In recent months, the pace of work has become more than just a routine. It's not about the quantity of work, but what it represents to me. Perfectionism has affected me as both an artist and a person, turning work into torture.

A couple of months ago, I decided to explore traditional art as a form of therapy. For me, it's about acceptance, comfort, and self-love. When I take a brush and some paints, something magical happens. Even when I make mistakes, I find pleasure in the process. My mind immerses itself in the moment, the idea, and the expression. There's no pressure to conceive art as work or to face associated responsibilities. Moreover, during this process, I don't experience the anxiety that overwhelms me in other situations, like that compulsive movement of my leg when I feel my mind is racing faster than my hand.

So, I decided to take my oils and start painting small portraits, like the one I'm presenting today. This portrait of my daughter Aurora was painted using titanium white and carbon black oils on unprimed 300-gram watercolor paper. I used a size 4 flat brush to trace the lines and cover larger areas, while I defined the details with smaller round brushes ranging from size 1 to 000.

This time, I chose to forego the use of linseed oil since I'm working on unprimed paper, and my intention was to achieve a more spontaneous technique without applying transparent layers. However, I did use Liquin, an alkyd medium, to expedite the drying process. Ever since I discovered Liquin, my enjoyment of using oils has increased significantly, which is another way my impatience manifests.

The choice to portray it in monochrome was because it had been a long time since I experimented with traditional techniques, so I wanted to focus exclusively on values rather than color.

Beautiful! I love this shade of blue that you used. Haha yes, liquin is such a good product, it makes the experience so much better than just using linseed oil. I think the traditional medium just stimulates our senses better than digital. Especially when you have to do the brush strokes and mix the paint yourself... And the smell too! That's why traditional is such a fun medium. Nice to hear you're doing well Alejandra <3

Gosh, I love the smell, lol.
Thank you, Vyankka. I'll be moving by the end of the year to a place with more space, so finally I'll have my Studio 🤩 I guess I'm preparing my mood for that.

The smell of chemicals 😂 Careful with that tho, if you have poor ventilation it might affect you long term even if it is Liquin it still has smell. But I agree with you, I also love the smell of oil paint and linseed.

That's great news!!! I can feel your excitement. Having your own studio is really really nice ahaha. Are you gonna post a studio tour? 🤣

Jody is in Brazil (again) and we're going to wait until he's back so we move out to the new place. The house is perfect, and the town is just lovely. The future studio needs work, because is a small old house next to the one we bought. For sure I'll be posting the work in progress 😊 it's really exciting.
Yes, the ventilation is one of the reasons I don't paint that much at my current place, especially if the girls are around.
