[Esp-Eng] Movie Review: Evil Dead Saga, Del Terror a la Comedia/From Horror to Comedy

¿Alguna vez han visto algún programa de televisión o incluso película en los personajes se encuentran viendo una película de terror vieja que se ve ridícula y barata? Paranorman es un gran ejemplo de ello, siendo que el protagonista se encuentra viendo una peli de clase B en la que podían verse los efectos baratos, disfraces malos y lo absurda que puede llegara a ser la historia y los sucesos. Podría decirse que la película de la cual hablaremos hoy es la que popularizó este gag recurrente en la cultura pop de hoy día.
Evil Dead es una saga de películas de "terror" que comenzó en 1981, dirigido por el gran director Sam Raimi, quién también dirigió las películas de Spiderman de Tobey Maguire y la más reciente peli de Doctor Strange. Esta peli fue protagonizada por un gran amigo suyo del instituto Bruce Campbell, la cual hoy día se ha vuelto todo un clásico del cine de horror 80tero, siendo el personaje de Ashley J. Williams (Ash pa' los panas) un icono junto con Jason o Freddy Krueger.
The Evil Dead

la historia trata de cinco amigos que llegan a una cabaña para pasar su fin de semana, con disgusto de algunas de los miembros del grupo se quedan, pero mientras están ahí la puerta al sótano se abre, motivados por la curiosidad los jóvenes descienden y se encuentran con un magnetófono, una reliquia cuchillo y el Necronomicón, interactuar con eso desata horrores innombrables.
Se supone que esta película fue la primera del director, se entiende que el presupuesto fuese considerablemente bajo, sin embargo, siento que hicieron un trabajo relativamente decente siendo todos en el set (tanto el director como los actores) puros novatos. La historia se siente algo forzada y casi ridícula, aquél bosque solitario y aquella cabaña en no muy buen estado genera cierto grado de repeluz, es increíble como los muchachos no les parezca nada raro el ambiente. Sin embargo, estamos hablando de finales de los 70´s, en aquella época no había muchas películas de terror de ese estilo, solo "Masacre en Texas la cual es la más representativa de esos años.
Los efectos especiales son ciertamente decentes, algunas escenas son cuestionables la de las raíces que abusan de la chica pero otras legan a ser algo chistosas. No sabes si asustarte por los feos disfraces o reírte por lo hilarante de toda la situación, pero eso no le quita que sea ciertamente disfrutable, al punto en que quieres saber quién será el ultimo superviviente de aquella pesadilla. Le doy una calificación de 6.9, está buena, pero ciertamente olvidable.
Evil Dead II
La segunda entrega nos cuenta una historia muy parecida, Ash se dispone a pasar un fin de semana en el bosque con su novia y todo cambia cuando reproducen una cinta en la que un profesor había grabado varios pasajes del Necronomicón. Esto desata horrores innombrables que lo llevan a la locura.
A pesar de ser una secuela, la peli funciona más como un reboot, ya que el único actor que se conservó de la anterior fue Bruce Campbell. La peli comienza resumiendo y a la par contándote de otra manera los sucesos de la peli anterior, esto debido a que el director no pudo obtener los derechos para las escenas anteriores,por lo que se vio forzado a refilmar las escenas. La peli anterior tenia cierto grado de humor involuntario, a pesar de haber pasado sin pena ni gloria en la taquilla, le fue muy bien en el formato casero y las retransmisiones de TV, convirtiéndose así en una peli de culto. Raimi se dio cuenta de esto y recurrió a inspiraciones de segmentos como los de los 3 chifaldos o charlie chaplin, por lo que decidió recurrir a ese estilo de humor físico y absurdo, sin dejar de lado lo grotesco y visceral de la peli anterior.
En la primer película, Ash era más como un personaje secundario poco memorable, siendo alguien tímido bastante tranquilo, pero que por cosas del destino o casualidad, termina siendo el ultimo sobreviviente de la pesadillezca noche en la cabaña. Sin embargo en esta secuela, Ash es mas seguro de si mismo y más animado, a la hora de que ocurren los hechos este se vuelve más valiente y audaz. La escena en la que los objetos comienzan a reírse es bastante curiosa, me cuesta trabajo entender si es la posesión de la casa la cual se burla del sufrimiento de Ash o solo es una alucinación hacia el descenso a la locura de este. Lo que si hay que destacar, son las geniales escenas de acción y suspenso.
Su emblemática prótesis de motosierra y escopeta recortada se volvieron todo un clásico del cine slasher, de como un personaje tranquilo termina convirtiéndose en un antiheroe cazamonstruos, lo cual no era muy común en aquellos tiempos (quizás en Japon con Devilman) e hizo esta película muy memorable, por eso le doy una calificación de 8.5, es una pelicula buenísima, la vería muchas veces y no me cansaría, agarra la mayoría de los elementos de la peli anterior y los mejora de una manera excelente.
Army of Darkness
Esta entrega nos sitúa en Inglaterra, siglo XIII. Las fuerzas demoníacas ejercen su reinado en la Edad Media. Todo cambia con la inesperada llegada de un nuevo héroe (Ash), provisto de armas de actualidad y que dice venir del futuro.
La película empieza mostrándonos parte de todo lo que ya vimos, asegurándose de que no nos perdiésemos en la trama y recordásemos bien los sucesos. Ya no conserva escenas tan grotescas como en las anteriores, se centra más en la comedia y en la acción, en escenas tales como las del molino, o la batalla contra los zombies. El personaje de Ash es casi irreconocible, pasando de ser un muchacho común y amable a un cazademonios sarcástico e incluso demente, en parte se entiende debido a todos los horrores que pasó y a la gente que vio morir, siendo forzado a mostrar una actitud de él que probablemente reprimía o ni sabía que tenía.
La película se siente bastante absurda, imposible tomarla enserio. Sin embargo, los momentos de acción son bastante buenos y entretenidos, es ciertamente extraña, pero a la vez excelente para aquellos que les gustan ciertas películas como a mi, le doy una calificación de 8.4 no es tan memorable como su antecesora, pero tiene con qué defenderse.
Al ver toda la saga, pude notar ciertas referencias que vi en pelis, como las motosierras y los demonios del averno. Ash ha sido uno de los mejores antiheroes del cine que haya podido ver, demostrando que los humanos también pueden defenderse ante los monstruos. Entre varios elementos que me llamaron la atención fue la mano cortada, la cual me hizo recordar mucho a Guts, el espadachín negro del manga Berserk, también las motosierras y la actitud demente que tiene Denji, protagonista el manga Chainsaw man. Los creadores de dichas obras mencionaron que se inspiraron en ciertos aspectos la saga para crear a dichos personajes (aunque Denji se inspire más en Masacre en Texas), los 3 son caza demonios que han tenido vidas complicadas y que han perdido a algún ser querido por culpa de los monstruos, por lo cual comienzan a pelear y matarlos a diestra y siniestra.
La saga entera es genial, todo un clásico del cine de horror que ya casi ni se hace hoy en día. También existe una serie de televisión que le sigue a esta saga, sin embargo, aun no la he visto por lo cual podría hablar de ella otro día. Sin más que agregar, me despido 💀.

Have you ever seen a TV show or even a movie where the characters are watching an old horror movie that looks ridiculous and cheap? *Paranorman is a great example of this, being that the main character is watching a B movie in which you could see the cheap effects, bad costumes and how absurd the story and events can be. It could be said that the movie we will talk about today is the one that popularized this recurring gag in today's pop culture.
Evil Dead is a saga of "horror" movies that began in 1981, directed by the great director Sam Raimi, who also directed Tobey Maguire's Spiderman movies and the most recent Doctor Strange movie. This movie was starred by a great friend of his from high school Bruce Campbell, which today has become a classic 80's horror movie, being the character of Ashley J. Williams (Ash pa' los panas) an icon along with Jason or Freddy Krueger.

the story is about five friends who arrive at a cabin to spend their weekend, to the chagrin of some of the members of the group they stay, but while they are there the door to the basement opens, motivated by curiosity the young people descend and find a tape recorder, a knife relic and the Necronomicon, interacting with it unleashes unnamable horrors.
This is supposed to be the director's first film, it's understandable that the budget was considerably low, however, I feel they did a relatively decent job with everyone on the set (both the director and the actors) being pure rookies. The story feels a bit forced and almost ridiculous, that lonely forest and that cabin in not very good condition generates a certain degree of repulsion, it's amazing how the guys don't find the environment weird at all. However, we are talking about the late 70's, at that time there were not many horror movies of that style, only "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" which is the most representative of those years.
The special effects are certainly decent, some scenes are questionable the one with the roots abusing the girl but others manage to be somewhat funny. You don't know whether to be scared by the ugly costumes or laugh at the hilariousness of the whole situation, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's certainly enjoyable, to the point where you want to know who will be the last survivor of that nightmare. I give it a rating of 6.9, it's good, but certainly forgettable.

*The second installment tells a very similar story, Ash is about to spend a weekend in the woods with his girlfriend and everything changes when they play a tape in which a professor had recorded several passages of the Necronomicon. This unleashes unspeakable horrors that drive him to madness.
Despite being a sequel, the movie works more like a reboot, since the only actor that was kept from the previous one was Bruce Campbell. The film begins by summarizing and retelling the events of the previous film in a different way, because the director was unable to obtain the rights to the previous scenes, so he was forced to re-shoot the scenes. The previous film had a certain degree of unintentional humor, and despite having passed without success at the box office, it did very well in the home format and TV rebroadcasts, thus becoming a cult film. Raimi realized this and resorted to inspirations from segments such as the 3 Stooges or Charlie Chaplin, so he decided to resort to that style of physical and absurd humor, without leaving aside the grotesque and visceral of the previous film.
In the first film, Ash was more like a not very memorable secondary character, being someone shy and quite quiet, but by fate or coincidence, ends up being the last survivor of the nightmare night in the cabin. However, in this sequel, Ash is more self-confident and animated, and when the events occur, he becomes braver and bolder. The scene in which the objects begin to laugh is quite curious, I find it hard to understand if it is the possession of the house which mocks Ash's suffering or it is just a hallucination towards his descent into madness. What is worth mentioning are the great action and suspense scenes.
His emblematic chainsaw prosthesis and sawed-off shotgun became a classic of slasher movies, how a quiet character ends up becoming a monster-hunting antihero, which was not very common in those days (maybe in Japan with Devilman) and made this movie very memorable, that's why I give it a rating of 8.5, it's a great movie, I would watch it many times and I wouldn't get tired, it takes most of the elements of the previous movie and improves them in an excellent way.
Army of Darkness
This installment places us in England, 13th century. The demonic forces exercise their reign in the Middle Ages. Everything changes with the unexpected arrival of a new hero (Ash), equipped with modern weapons and claiming to come from the future.
The film begins by showing us part of everything we have already seen, making sure that we do not get lost in the plot and remember the events well. It no longer retains scenes as grotesque as in the previous ones, it focuses more on comedy and action, in scenes such as those of the mill, or the battle against the zombies. Ash's character is almost unrecognizable, going from being a common and kind boy to a sarcastic and even demented demon hunter, partly understandable due to all the horrors he went through and the people he saw die, being forced to show an attitude of him that he probably repressed or didn't even know he had.
The film feels rather absurd, impossible to take seriously. However, the action moments are quite good and entertaining, it's certainly strange, but at the same time excellent for those who like certain movies like me, I give it a rating of 8.4 it's not as memorable as its predecessor, but it has something to defend itself with.
Watching the whole saga, I could notice certain references I saw in movies, such as the chainsaws and the demons of the underworld. Ash has been one of the best anti-heroes I've ever seen, showing that humans can also defend themselves against monsters. Among several elements that caught my attention was the severed hand, which reminded me a lot of Guts, the black swordsman from the manga Berserk, also the chainsaws and the demented attitude that Denji, protagonist of the manga Chainsaw man, has. The creators of these works mentioned that they were inspired by certain aspects of the saga to create these characters (although Denji is more inspired by Texas Chainsaw Massacre), the 3 are demon fighters who have had complicated lives and have lost a loved one because of the monsters, so they begin to fight and kill them left and right.
The whole saga is great, a classic horror movie that is almost never made nowadays. There is also a TV series that follows this saga, however, I haven't seen it yet so I could talk about it another day. Without further ado, I bid you farewell 💀.
