32 YEARS OLD | I never thought I'd make it this far

I’m not usually one for celebrating my birthday, so we always have a small celebration at home—we watch a movie, eat cake… This year would be no exception, especially considering everything that’s happened recently; the mood for celebrating is almost nonexistent. On the other hand, though, I know we should enjoy every birthday as if it were our last, because we don’t know if we’ll still be here next year. There are so many conflicting thoughts in my mind right now, but anyway, I decided to celebrate my birthday with joy and peace of mind, sharing our favorite cake with my husband and son.

I made this cake myself. In fact, I’d been buying the ingredients little by little over several weeks since buying everything at once was a real strain on my budget. Luckily, yesterday we managed to buy the last few things we needed, and I was able to make it by hand (because my mixer broke). It’s the first time I’ve made a tres leches cake entirely by hand, and honestly, I didn’t feel like doing it again, hahaha, It was really hard to whip the meringue and beat the cake batter, since the tres leches cake batter is quite thick. But despite the difficulties, I enjoyed making it because I focused on my cake—on making sure it turned out right—and for a moment I forgot all my problems and worries.

And to be completely honest, I never thought I’d come this far. Time flies so fast that it hardly seems like yesterday that I was living with my parents—back when I was the daughter who knew nothing of the responsibilities and problems that are suffocating me today. I remember that 15 years ago, I was more dramatic than I am now, everything felt like a disaster to me, and now that I look back on it, they were actually very silly problems. I did have a difficult childhood and adolescence because of my father, but… Aside from that, I miss those typical teenage problems; I really miss that time, even though it wasn’t the best. Right now, the world is getting weirder and weirder, and I miss a little bit of the normalcy there was 15 years ago.
