Basic Caesar Salad

When I was a little girl, my parents used to make lasagna with Caesar salad all the time. I thought the salad was disgusting and wouldn’t eat it. Now I regret all those times I made faces at the salad, because as I grew up, it became my favorite salad. Caesar salad definitely has an extraordinary and unique flavor that makes me absolutely love it, Unfortunately, it’s something I don’t make very often because I always forget to buy the ingredients—and they really aren’t that expensive. Maybe the most expensive part is the Parmesan cheese, but you don’t need to buy a kilo; just a little bit is enough. Today, for the first time in a long while, I made Caesar salad. Although I keep it pretty simple, I don’t really like it with chicken, so this salad is pretty “basic” and easy to make.

The first and most important ingredient we’re going to use is lettuce. It should be romaine lettuce, but I prefer this kind, so feel free to use whichever you like best. I always wash the lettuce very thoroughly before eating it—I rinse it with plenty of water and let it soak in vinegar for about 10 minutes, then I place the lettuce in a colander to drain all the water and chop it into small pieces. We’ll also need croutons; in my case, I used four slices of sandwich bread and toasted them in a skillet until they were golden brown and crispy.

Then cut the toasted bread into small cubes and place them in a bowl along with the lettuce and Parmesan cheese.

I added a small pinch of salt—since the Parmesan cheese meant there was no need to add too much salt—as well as a little black pepper, a pinch of mustard, and finally mayonnaise. I stirred everything together until it was completely blended.

This is one of my favorite lunches so far this month; we absolutely love Caesar salad—it's delicious even without chicken.
