The world as a child vs. as an adult | Contest number #300

When we're kids, we're very innocent and let our imaginations run wild, but something else that has a huge impact is when adults make up stories and never make it clear that they're just fantasies or lies, haha. Over time, you start to realize that a lot of things aren't the way they used to be, and personally, I went through quite a few disappointments as I grew up because, in a way, you realize that the world is simpler and grayer than we thought.

One of the most common things we believe as kids—and I’m almost certain this has happened to many of you—is that the moon and the sun are chasing you. And yes, I include the sun because when I was a little girl, I loved looking directly at the sun, and no one ever told me that could make me go blind, hahaha. I felt special when I saw the moon at night while riding in a car and it seemed to move along with us. Another thing related to the sky is that I used to think the sky was a giant swimming pool—when the sky was clear and sunny, I saw it as a huge pool, and when it was cloudy, I thought the clouds were foam. As I got a little older, I realized that wasn’t the case, but I still believed that the clouds could “touch” each other, as if they had a cotton-like texture, haha.

One of the biggest shocks you experience as you grow up is realizing that life and our existence are completely inexplicable—that the universe exists, that we are just a tiny speck of something enormous that can’t be measured in terms of size because it’s so vast. When I was a child, I didn’t grasp any of this, even though I watched documentaries—since my dad loved watching that kind of thing at home.

And the biggest and most traumatic lie of my childhood came from my mom. To this day, I don’t know why she told me that, and I always remind her of it, but she says she never said that to me—though I’ll never forget it, haha. When I was little, my mom told me that Chinese ballet dancers (YES, specifically Chinese—I don’t understand why) would cut their feet so they could stand on their toes. I clearly remember her explaining that they cut off the very part where the toes begin, making a straight cut that supposedly allowed them to stand on their toes and have more flexibility. That really traumatized me, and for many years I believed it—I’d even watch ballet dancers on TV and always think, “Poor girl—it must be horrible to have her feet cut off.” When I reached my teens, I realized that wasn’t true—and in the worst possible way: I was talking to a group of friends and told them about it, and they all laughed at me. And that’s how my mom tricked me for so many years, hahaha.

I took a closer look when I got home, and what I saw was that their feet are indeed quite battered, but they don't hurt themselves like my mom had told me...

And finally, when I was little, I thought our bodies were literally like the movie Inside Out—I always believed there were little people working inside our bodies to make everything function perfectly, not just our emotions. Plus, back then there was a cartoon that was just like that, and I loved watching it because it fed my wild imagination, hahaha, It was really disappointing to grow up and realize that there aren’t little people inside your body, but even so, it’s still amazing just how incredible the human body is on its own.

Some of the stories you were told as a child are funny, but the one about the Chinese women who had their feet bound must have been traumatic—just as you say—as was the sense of awe you describe regarding the movie; thank you for sharing your experiences,

As kids we just believe what our parents said and some of them they said just to scare us of a certain thing or to make us believe things their way.
Btw the Chinese ballet story is frightening, but I have read that a couple of centuries back, Chinese females from childhood would squeeze their feet up so hard that to an extent that their feet were deformed and they would stop growing. In those days the man were fascinated with women who had very small feet, they believed it to be beauty. This is true, there was a documentary also on this, showing how they did it. Was gruesome and one can only wonder how much women have been tortured by men in different ways across all the cultures.

Wow! That's awful. Extremes have definitely always been part of our history as humanity, and trying to please others has led us to do terrible things. I can't imagine how painful it must have been to inflict that kind of damage on the feet 😥
