Tips for extreme cheapskates: changing the color of Christmas lights

Básicamente hoy me sentía muy ansiosa y como actualmente no tengo algo con que desestresarme, decidí que pondría el árbol de navidad, quizás eso me ayudaría a despejar mi mente… El único problema es que de verdad deseaba que mi árbol fuese solo con luces doradas y decoraciones en rojo, hace mucho he querido este estilo, pero nunca he podido hacerlo porque siempre escojo mal las luces, termino escogiendo demasiados colores random, y de hecho el año pasado hice una estupidez, que fue comprar luces blancas para mi árbol, junto con algunas multicolor, pero las luces blancas NUNCA me gustaron, se veían como bombillos de hospital, simplemente horrible. Asi que pensé que quizás había alguna manera de cambiarle el color? Jajaja, se me ocurrió usar pintura al frio amarilla, pero antes de hacer cualquier tonteria consulte con internet, ya que estoy segura que alguien en algún momento tuvo esta misma idea y seguramente hicieron un tutorial.

Basically, today I was feeling really anxious, and since I don't have anything to de-stress with, I decided to put up the Christmas tree. Maybe that would help clear my head… The only problem is that I really wanted my tree to have only gold lights and red decorations. I've wanted this style for a long time, but I've never been able to do it because I always choose the wrong lights. I end up picking too many random colors, and actually, last year I did something stupid: I bought white lights for my tree, along with some multicolored ones, but I NEVER liked the white lights. They looked like hospital bulbs, just awful. So I thought maybe there was a way to change the color? Haha, I thought about using yellow acrylic paint, but before doing anything silly, I checked online, since I'm sure someone had this same idea at some point and probably even made a tutorial

Y realmente mas que un tutorial buscaba ver si era seguro hacer esto o me electrocutaría en el intento, mis ganas de vivir no son muchas, pero tampoco quiero morir electrocutada jaja, mi sorpresa fue que conseguí varios videos que, si hacían esto, pero la mayoría lo hacia pintando cada bombillo con pintura de uñas del color deseado, evidentemente no tengo pintura de uñas amarilla ya que nunca usaría ese color en mis uñas. Asi que probe usar pintura al frio amarilla, debo decir que esta opción no fue la mejor, aunque el color si era visible, era muy tenue y obviamente necesitaba de varias capas, pero para que la pintura se secara era muy difícil.

And really, more than a tutorial, I was looking to see if it was safe to do this or if I'd get electrocuted trying. My will to live isn't great, but I also don't want to die by electrocution, haha. To my surprise, I found several videos that did this, but most of them painted each light bulb with nail polish of the desired color. Obviously, I don't have any yellow nail polish since I would never use that color on my nails. So I tried using yellow acrylic paint. I must say this option wasn't the best. Although the color was visible, it was very faint and obviously needed several coats, but getting the paint to dry was very difficult.

Pero no todo estaba perdido ya que tenía una segunda opción, estos marcadores acrílicos que compre hace un año exactamente eran perfectos para esto, aunque tuve que darle 3 capas, pero funciono muy bien. Al principio usé un marcador amarillo, pero me di cuenta que el color que dejaba era demasiado amarillo, quería algo mas “dorado” asi que la segunda capa la hice con un marcador naranja claro y se veía mucho mejor.

But all was not lost, as I had a second option: these acrylic markers I bought exactly a year ago were perfect for this. I did have to apply three coats, but it worked very well. At first, I used a yellow marker, but I realized the color it left was too yellow. I wanted something more "golden," so I did the second coat with a light orange marker, and it looked much better.

Aquí pueden ver la diferencia entre un color y el otro en la izquierda esta pintando con naranja y da ese color dorado que imaginaba, mientras que al lado derecho vemos un amarillo pollito frio.

Here you can see the difference between one color and the other. On the left, it's being painted with orange, giving that golden color I imagined, while on the right, we see a cold, chick-yellow color.

Y por cierto, asi se veían antes las luces, el cambio de un blanco frio a un cálido dorado es impresionante.

Después de pintar cada bombillo, pusimos el árbol de navidad le colocamos las luces y adornos y quedo justo como lo imagine desde hace mucho tiempo, por fin logre mi sueño jaja, por cierto, mi plan realmente era comprar las luces amarillas específicamente unas que vi que tenían un efecto como de estrellas pero cuando pregunte el precio se me quitaron las ganas, eran sumamente costosas, y bueno esta actividad además de ser gratis me ayudo a distraer la mente el día de hoy asi que estoy muy contenta con m8i arbolito.

After painting each light bulb, we put up the Christmas tree, added the lights and decorations, and it turned out just as I'd imagined it for so long. I finally achieved my dream, haha. By the way, my plan was actually to buy yellow lights, specifically some I saw that had a star-like effect, but when I asked the price, I changed my mind. They were extremely expensive. Anyway, this activity, besides being free, helped me take my mind off things today, so I'm very happy with my little tree.
