Unconditional support from a wonderful woman | contest number #291

¿Hubo alguien que te apoyara en los momentos más difíciles? ¿Cómo te ayudó?
Did someone support you during your hardest time? How did they help?
I’m usually (or used to be) the one who supports others, but I’ve rarely received that kind of help myself. Perhaps the time I received the most support was during one of the worst moments of my life, when my dad was murdered. Back then, many family members I’d never really appreciated showed just how valuable they were—especially my maternal aunt. She was an absolutely incredible person… I used to see her very rarely because she lived in another state. We’d visit her at Christmas and spend the holidays at my grandmother’s house—those were the best Christmases of my life. My aunt always found a way to make you smile; she was a wonderful person, very playful but also full of character.

My dad died right when I was finishing high school and about to start college. It was the strangest time of my life—I had never experienced such a personal loss before. His death was incredibly traumatic for me. For a long time, I couldn’t eat, I didn’t sleep well, and above all, I felt like I wasn’t doing anything with my life. I wanted to go to college, but our financial situation was dire; my dad was practically our sole breadwinner, and it was very difficult for my mom and me to manage on our own. My aunt, despite the distance, always called us on the phone and encouraged me to do something with my life. I had so much respect for her because she had been battling cancer for many years— The cancer would always go away and then come back… I saw her in her worst moments and her best. To me, she was a very strong and brave person. Her words encouraged me to keep going, and I started looking for a job. My main goal back then was to work to save money for college… When my aunt saw that I was trying my best, she reached out to me and helped me pay for my college tuition.

She supported me many times, even with some things I needed for college. My aunt was a very good person, and since life is always cruel to good people, she passed away almost 10 years ago—cancer won the battle. My Christmases were never the same again; I never visited my grandmother’s house again, never traveled to that state I loved so much, and never heard her voice again.

Unfortunately, that’s the only photo I have of her; she didn’t like having her picture taken. In that photo, she was at our house—it was right after my dad’s funeral… She took that last photo with her hair still on, since she was about to shave it all off. It was really upsetting for me to see her hair falling out in clumps, but even so, she kept a smile on her face, never showing her pain. I dare say she was the person who supported me the most—not just in that specific situation, but also in other circumstances where she helped my mom financially, legally, and emotionally, since my mom was being abused by my dad. She was the only one who listened, who tried to help, while everyone else turned a blind eye. But as often happens in these cases, the victim never decides to take action, despite having all the tools my aunt offered her. But anyway, this was pretty intense to recount; I feel pretty bad now writing these things. All I can do is console myself by thinking that she “is resting in peace.”

What a wonderful Aunt you had. Was she close to your late father? She was sensitive to your plight and so willing to extend help to you being too young to handle this tragic loss let alone deal with the legalities and financial matters. I was mired in government paperwork while grieving the loss of my father. My uncle realized my frustration and took on some of the things that needed done. He told me, "Focus on helping your mother and siblings to grieve, time for you to step up, you are the eldest and they need you."

The truth is, my father and my aunt weren't very close, but even so, she was my mother's sister and always supported us in everything. I'm so sorry for your loss, but I'm glad to hear that you also had someone you could count on; usually, in situations like that, people tend to say, “If you need anything, count on me,” but in reality, they only say it out of politeness; very few people actually help.

It hasn't been easy, but that's life. Thank you for your kind words 🤍
I'm glad you shared this story with us, even though it felt very painful to share.
I hope you have found some ways to make yourself feel better. I think it's so important to keep finding ways to take good care of ourselves during and after very traumatic things.
And I'm so glad you had that consistent support from your aunt during that time.
May you keep bravely doing good things in the world that make you happy and would make your aunt proud.
