Biology is wonderful; it is about numerous forms of life that have evolved to maintain their genetic composition on the planet, and by this, we are not only referring to animals and plants, but also to those microorganisms that share the same purpose and that often turn out to be pathogenic.

The study of scientific knowledge has made us know much more about them, so today we are aware that we are surrounded on a large scale by microbes, viruses, parasites, fungi and protists, which in some way cause diseases.

Surely you are aware of your defense system, because we even ingest vitamins to strengthen the immune system; however, it is important to know that all animals on the planet, maintain certain functions and elements that also help to protect themselves from diseases.

Invertebrate animals also have natural lines of defense. The first has to do with external barriers, and that is the reason for the hardness of their shells, exoskeletons, and mucus that protect them. In this mucus are found certain proteins similar to vertebrate blood that attack toxins and pathogens.

There is not much information about the presence of a specific immune system like that of vertebrates, whose blood maintains the leadership of the functions related to non-specific internal defenses, such as phagocytosis, inflammation and fever. If these are not sufficient, then the specific immune response, already established by the cells and the so-called humoral immunity, is activated.

The skin is fundamental as a blocking agent for most microbial agents, and although it seems that nowadays we are bothered by hair, sweat or dead cells, they are indispensable to create an environment so uncomfortable for living beings that they can make us sick. The sebaceous glands have natural antibiotics that do not allow the proliferation of these pathogens and that is why we must let them fulfill their function.

Mucus and tears also have important antimicrobial substances that protect our respiratory system, in addition to the hairs in our nostrils that we find so ugly. If some of these microbes manage to overcome these barriers, the second mechanism is activated, the internal defenses, where leukocytes are elementary. Fever is also the body's response to stop the reproduction of the agent.

We see then how life has sought ways to keep itself isolated from the agents that can threaten it, and all this has been decisive for the continued commitment to the biological diversity of the planet.
