The Grand Australian Brewery Adventure: Quest 1: Brew Boys - Croydon Park, Adelaide
This is the first steps in a grand adventure to find some amazing, hidden gems in the form of breweries. It is likely that this adventure will take us to places all over the country in search of the best brew. Tucked down alleyways and hidden amongst the hills. To holes in the wall and to great expansive warehouses. Crazy blends and simple recipes await for those willing to answer the call.
The journey begins in Adelaide, Australia. Just outside the city, in the suburb of Croydon Park, is a little micro brewery called Brew Boys. Established in 2008, Brew Boys are a bit of a veteran in the Adelaide brewing scene. Everything here is brewed on site and are readily available from the taps or to take away.
As the doors swing open you are greeted with the sights and smells that are unique to a brewery. The smell of timber and barley, some light chatter at the bar and a warmth that invites you in.
The Beers
Now of course I had to try a few. The adventure has just begun, it may be long and arduous, and there is a long way to go. So why not wet the whistle and have a few cold ones.
The first beer I tried was the Middi-eval and as you can probably tell by the name; it is a mid-strength session ale. 3.5% alcohol but packing the flavour of a full strength beer. A very flavoursome and easy beer to drink all afternoon filled to the brim with bitter hops balanced against some malt for a truly enjoyable experience.
The next beer I tried was the sour. The Pining Passion to be exact. Now before I talk about this beer I should mention that sours are my poison. It will generally be what I choose to drink for the sour, fruity flavours. This sour is 5.3% alcohol and an interesting mix of Australian pineapple and passionfruit. A mix that works quite well together and does deliver on the fruity and sour flavour.
The last beer I tried was the Pollen Pincher. Talk about stealing the show. This 5.2% alcohol honey lager was something else. A deep flavour and a smooth honey finish. Perfect to drink under the hot sun.
The Range
For a small, micro brewery Brew Boys has a decent range of beers. At present there are seven different brews on tap and should be something for everyone. Apart from what I have tried there is a crisp ale, amber ale, an IPA and dark stout. There also happens to be some non-beer options (cider, ginger beer, lemon) if you are that way inclined.
The Venue
So we know about what beers are available but what is the place like? Well it's actually quite inviting. Plenty of room inside around varnished tables or old barrels and there is even a beer garden out back to enjoy the sunshine rays.
Despite the space inside, it definitely gives off a cozy vibe with a rustic/retro appeal with some arcade machines and a pool table towards the entrance.
The Culture
What Brew Boys offer that you can't find at a big pub or a large brewery is the homely feeling inside. It is owned by a bunch of guys who just love brewing beer and they want to share that with you.
It also hosts a weekly quiz night, live music, beer launch parties and is available for booking for functions and events.
I quite personally like the decor style and colours inside. It is vibrant and rustic at the same time.
The Food
We are getting close to the end of this quest and you've probably worked up quite an appetite and you are wondering what they have to offer. Well, Brew Boys has partnered up with Nugg Lyf who have a kitchen right inside opposite the bar. They offer a range of mouth watering burgers and chicken nugget combinations that simply cannot be beaten. These are not your run of the mill burgers and nuggets. They are something that has to be eaten to be believed.
Stats Recap
To close up this part of the adventure I would like to recap our journey so far with the quest at Brew Boys. They offer a decent selection of craft beers that will suit almost anyone. They have a welcoming venue with a chill vibe and amazing food to accompany the beer. If you are in Adelaide, South Australia I recommend dropping in for a pint.
So that marks the end for this quest and the start of our adventure to find the best brew. I wonder where our path will take us for the next quest.
