Kolony: Claim Your Hive Magazine — Right Now
Yesterday, the U.S. government shut down Anthropic's flagship product, Claude Fable 5. You've likely heard about it already. But that's not what this post is about.
Before the shutdown, I was able to complete a vibe coding project I've been planning for most of this year. And I used Fable 5 to do it. Over the course of 3-4 days, I put in a total of as many hours to get Fable 5 to design, code, and publish a magazine-style frontend for the Hive blockchain. The idea involves reordering Hive posts into a magazine-style layout. I call it Kolony .
The idea grew out of frustration with being able to see a Hive user's published content in only one way. There are some variations, of course, between the different Hive frontends and how they present a user's published content. But the variations are minor. For the most part, every user's blog is organized in reverse chronological order. That's not bad, but it is limiting.
Some of the frontends allow users to switch between long-form posts and shorts, or search by category or tag. These are not wrong, but they are limiting.
I'm pleased to announce that every Hive user now has their own Hive magazine. Through Kolony, you can organize your content in magazine sections by category, tag, or customized by your own preferences.
A Primer on Kolony Magazine Layouts
I want to be clear. Kolony is not where you go to create a magazine. It's where you go to claim yours. It's already there. You just have to login and customize it.

Currently, the only login method is Keychain authentication. I'll add other auths later.
Once you login and claim your magazine, you can leave the layout in default mode or customize it to your preferences. If you do nothing, your magazine layout will default to categories. Your latest posts will automatically appear in a 3-column layout with your posts organized by your primary categories. However, you can customize your magazine by clicking on the Customize button inside your dashboard.

Customizing allows you to add new categories, add tags, and create your own content sections. For example, because I publish a lot of fiction, I've got sections titled Fiction and Writing, Books, and Literary Games. I've even got a section called Farmpunk, a fiction genre I created and write in quite often.

Other customization features include the ability to move your posts from one section to another. The default limit is 10 posts per section, but if you want to make room for more posts, you can move a post to another section that might be just as appropriate. For example, you could have an Actifit section and a Fitness section. You can also hide posts from your magazine if you don't want those posts visible but don't want to delete the content.
You can reorder your sections so that they appear how you want them to appear in your magazine.
Also, if you click on a post on any user's magazine, it will open a reading box and you can read the post directly in that user's magazine. You can even upvote and comment.
Other developments are on the way.
A Look At the Kolony Roadmap
Kolony is by no means a finished product. I do have plans to improve it, though your feedback is welcome. Future improvements include:
- The ability to pin posts to the top of your magazine
- Clickable tabs for magazine, blog, chronological posts, communities, and wallet
- The ability to customize colors and other theme settings
- The ability to share magazines on popular social media platforms
- Similar author recommendations
- PDF export
- And even the ability to post directly from the magazine and have posts automatically appear within the magazine section of your choice
Of course, your feedback is welcome.
How To Claim Your Magazine
All you have to do to claim your magazine is head to Kolony.us and log in using Hive Keychain. If you want your magazine to appear as the default, do nothing. If you want to customize, click the Customize button and make the changes you want to make. Those changes will appear for all viewers.
To view any user's magazine, go to Kolony.us and add / and the user's account name, the same as you would with any frontend.
That's it! You now have your very own Hive magazine. All you have to do is claim it.
Please claim your magazine and let me know what you think!
