Root-over-rock Cascading Bonsai - Garden Photos and Stories

A root-over-rock attempt that could maybe be called cascading is put in a new pot. It was my first attempt and let's say I learned a lot from my failure. But it's nice enough to keep.

More about my bonsai experiment follows below as well as some pictures of ancient seeds that I will try to raise despite slim chances. The equinox has passed and it's time to garden.

Here is the tree. I have never been sure of the species. It is likely to be myrtle family. It's similar to a pohutukawa or a bottlebrush. I will find out some day - they're very common.

A better view of the tree and the bowl-shaped pot it will be going in. Some new growth is just appearing in the spring sunshine.

I cover the hole in the new pot with some plant fibre. You can see from another angle here that the little tree is worth perservering with. It has some nice aspects.

I lift the whole tree up rock and all - you can see the root structure here that has developed underneath the rock and in the sand.

I use the sand from the blue dish, and have some extra potting mix at hand.

Here is the rock moved into the bowl. The shape of rock is really not that suitable for the task and it's too big. I will look for more porous rocks in future that have more of a distinctive bowl shape and maybe some more streaks of different shades.

Top down view of the tree as it naturall sits, but I want the trunk to be closer to the rock, so I will put it in a place that forces it that way.

Here is the place where it will sit for a time. I have given it a first water. I am using the little box tree to push it into place, and a piece of limestone to keep it off the ground. The limestone I also hope to turn into a tray garden at some point in the future.

Before I finish, here are some VERY old seeds. I will put them into seedling trays anyway to see how I go. I have more of these, of different kinds, and if any germinate I will definitely post photos.

At least the older ones have been sealed in foil. They perhaps have a better chance even.
