Larry Is Alive #145 September 16, 2023: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone. Welcome to saturday, the 16th day of September, 2023. It is weekend and Larry does a quick home cleaning, then some laundry before he took his breakfast 🥞. It was a late one really for Larry. During his breakfast and as he prepares for his weekend deliveries, Larry turns his attention to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from Spain. He finds out that on this day in 1998, and after 30 years of terrorist guerrilla strikes in Spain that claimed 800 lives, the Basque separatist organization ETA declared an indefinite cease-fire; the truce lasted 14 months.

From Spain, Larry moves over to Singapore. He finds out that finds on this day in 1923, Lee Kuan Yew, a politician and lawyer who served as Singapore's Prime Minister from 1959 until 1990 was born. During his long reign, Singapore became Southeast Asia's most successful nation.

From Singapore, Larry moves over to Pakistan. He finds out that on this day in 1978, Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq was proclaimed president of Pakistan.

From Pakistan, Larry moves over to the Papua New Guinea. He finds out that on this day in 1975, Papua New Guinea gained full independence from Australia. Happy independence to them.

From Papua New Guinea, Larry moves over to Jordan. He finds out that on this day in 1970, Jordan's King Ḥussein proclaimed martial law in response to the hijacking of four international airliners by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

From Jordan, Larry moves over to The Netherlands. He finds out that on this day in 1736, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a Polish-born Dutch physicist and maker of scientific instruments died in The Hague, Dutch Republic [now in the Netherlands]. He is fondly remebered for inventing the mercury thermometer (1714) and developing the Fahrenheit temperature scale (1724).

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in history from Switzerland. He finds out that on this day in 1980, Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist who was the first to conduct a systematic study of children's understanding acquisition died in Geneva, Switzerland. Many consider him to be the pivotal figure in twentieth-century developmental psychology.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his weekend deliveries.
