Larry Is Alive #158 October 08, 2023: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone. It is Sunday the 8th day of October, 2023. The EPL threw up some exciting results this weekend. Yesterday, Manchester United pulled one of the greatest comebacks when they came from behind to score teo quick goals in less than three minutes to the end of the match to beat Brendford. Liverpool threw away a one goal lead to draw with Brighton (2-2) and Arsenal left it late to grab a dramatic late winner (1-0) over defending Premier League champions Manchester City at Emirates Stadium. These results will certainly boost the morales of the winning teams as they head home for the international break.

Before Larry commences his deliveries for the day, he turns his attention to also have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1871, the Great Chicago Fire broke out in the barn of Patrick and Catherine O'Leary, and by the time it was put out two days later, a wide area of the city had been decimated, with 300 people killed.

From USA, Larry moves over to Pakistan. He finds out that on this day in 2005, an earthquake rocked the Pakistan-administered area of Kashmir and Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province, killing at least 79,000 people.

From Pakistan, Larry goes to Argentina . He finds out that on this day in 1895, Juan Perón, an Argentine politician who served as president of Argentina three times (1946-52, 1952-55, and 1973-74) and formed and headed the Peronist movement, was born.

From Argentina, Larry moves over to Italy. He finds out that on this day in 2001, a Cessna took a wrong turn on a taxiway at Linate Airport in Milan and slammed into an SAS airliner set to take off, which exploded, killing 118 people, including four airport workers, in Italy's worst civilian air catastrophe in over 30 years.

From Italy, Larry goes to China. He finds out that on this day in 1856, In Canton (Guangzhou), Chinese officials boarded the Arrow, arrested many Chinese crew members (who were later released), and purportedly lowered the British flag; the incident contributed to the start of the second Opium War, in which Britain and France engaged China.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in history from Germany. He finds out that on this day in 1958, Ursula von der Leyen, née Ursula Albrecht, Belgian-born German politician who was the country's first female defense minister (2013–19) was born in Brussels, Belgium. Ursula von der Leyen became the first woman to be elected President of the European Commission in July 2019.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
