Larry Is Alive #243 January 17, 2024: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for wednesday the 17th day of January, 2024. Pre-tournament favourites, The Atlas Lions of Morocco began their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a resounding victory over a 10-man Tanzania in Group F.

In the other match of the day, Zambia and DR Congo drew 1-1 as the opening round of group games at the Africa Cup of Nations came to a close.

Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from Hawaii. He finds out that on this day in 1893, a committee led by Sanford Ballard Dole toppled Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani on behalf of Hawaiian sugar companies and their American supporters, establishing a provisional government with Dole as president.

From Hawaii, Larry goes to Japan. He finds out that on this day in 2005, a massive earthquake devastated the Ōsaka-Kōbe (Hanshin) metropolitan area, killing around 6,400 people and caused significant damage.

From Japan, Larry goes to Norway. He finds out that on this day in 1991, Harald V became king of Norway following the demise of his father, Olav V.

From Norway, Larry goes to the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1942, American professional boxer Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky.

Still in the USA, Larry finds out that on this day in 1917, the United States purchased three of the Virgin Islands, namely — St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix from Denmark for $25 million.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history also from D.R Congo. He finds out that during this month in 1959, Patrice Lumumba, an African nationalist leader and also the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (June–September 1960) died in Katanga province, D.RC.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
