Song inside (English/Spanish)

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

It is curious how songs connect us with others, defying time and space. Each song is like a giant web of stories, which spreads further each time a person listens to it and deposits in it their memories, thoughts and feelings. This is how somehow a part of us starts to become part of the songs we love, just as the songs stay inside us.

"Esa musiquita" is a song by the Argentinian composer and singer Teresa Parodi, whenever I listen to it I am always surprised by the amount of images it suggests. I use to play it on the guitar almost in an infinite cycle and while I play it I think of the woman in the song:

A humble woman, probably a domestic worker in the house of a rich family, listening on an old radio to her favorite songs, with low volume so that no one hears her, because the "Lady" and the "Lord" are bothered by Esa Musiquita de pueblo that is not up to the level of Chopin and Vivaldi. However for her, That little music comes from her own heart, and she listens to it passionately in the clandestinity of the clean sheets that she spreads laboriously, while she eats the tears and humiliations of the day.

A dissonant note on my guitar reminds me of my own misery. But the Cristofué who sings with me doesn't care about dissonance, he only sings because he is alive, because it rained after three days of unbearable heat, because the rain stopped but the day is cool; he only sings, he doesn't care about the dissonant note, and neither do I. The arpeggio takes me from new to old.

The arpeggio takes me back to the woman in the song and I think of her with some tenderness. Maybe she thinks of me too: The poor girl with the dissonant guitar, the one who plays for herself. She doesn't do it on the sly, but she's not free either; still nothing saddens her, she consoles herself with the overflowing freedom of the little bird that accompanies her on the other side of the window.

Perhaps if it is true, somewhere in the song the woman is thinking of me, while I think of her. And together we pity and love each other, we give each other the tenderness we have left over and we accompany each other without knowing for sure if the other exists or not.
