The Ancients (part 1)

-We've been walking for a long time now, are you sure about this? -asked Martha, leaning against the twisted trunk of one of the bushes on that moor.

-I am sure that I saw it when we were falling, maybe it is some object of Andromeda's, - answered Hiroko, slowing down to wait for her companion.

The Ithaca exploration ship had made an emergency landing on a theta-type planet, in sector two hundred and eighty of Norma's arm. For more than two years, the exploration fleet had gone into this region in search of new traces of Andromeda's fleet, without finding anything that would confirm its passage through it.

The Ithaca suffered a breakdown in the controls of its anti-gravitational propulsion system, and its crew members decided to descend to await assistance. Although mandated by Parliament, it was completely forbidden to descend, without prior authorization, on an inhabited planet; in case of emergency, this could be done as long as the least possible intervention was made with the native life forms.

Like all theta-class planets, this was a world with an atmosphere consisting mainly of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, little surface water and large deserts with little presence of plant life and little or no animal life.

During her descent, the pilot Hiroko Andrade, saw what she thought were the remains of the impact of some object, which she thought could be a ship, probably from Andromeda's fleet. Now unable to use their own ship and with no other means of transportation to facilitate their work, the crew of the Ithaca, Hiroko and Martha, walked from the place of their descent, to the place seen by Hiroko.

-Let's go Martha, it must be close by now, I am sure it must be around here, -said Hiroko, stopping to call the attention of her companion, who was still leaning on the bush-. Besides, remember that we shouldn't even be leaning on a tree, because it might be considered to intervene with the local life forms.

-Damn it, I'm tired, we've been walking for over two hours and the gravity is very strong here, -Martha exclaimed, straightening up to continue.

After a couple of hundred yards they saw what looked like a small hill covered with bushes, with the peculiarity that it seemed to be split in two, as if some object had passed through it, taking with it a piece of the mound.

-I told you it must be around here, -said Hiroko, pointing to the strange promontory.

They approached and could see that the strange formation did not seem to have occurred naturally, nor did it appear recently that many bushes were growing within the space created by the impact.

On the other side of the hill, almost completely covered by bushes and partially buried, were the remains of an ancient accident, a ship of completely unknown appearance peering through the foliage.

-I have never seen anything like this before, -said Martha, impressed.

It was a wedge-shaped ship, but very different from the colonizer ships, it was half the size of a colonizer ship and its hull had no instruments protruding from it, it was completely smooth from the tip to the tail, where its angular shape was truncated to make room for the propellers which appeared to be similar to those of the old antimatter jet-powered ships.

-I do not see any entries, how long do you think I can have here? -Hiroko asked.

-Perhaps the computer can tell according to the growth rate of the bushes and the geological parameters of the region. I will try to see if it can make a simulation, - answered Martha while typing some commands in the interface of her waterproof suit, which contacted directly the Ithaca's computer.

After several minutes of wandering around the ship and not being able to find an entrance to her battered but still watertight body, Martha received the results of the simulation.

-Damn, this is absurd, -she said in surprise.

-What's going on? -asked Hiroko, alarmed by the expression of surprise on Martha's face.

-According to the simulation, the development of these shrubs, although recent in its scale of life, is very long in relation to the human scale, so according to the population that grows on the ship has, not less than thirteen thousand years here.

-Impressive, it can't be Andromeda's then, -Hiroko intervened.

-No, it definitely can't be human, -Martha confirmed-. But that's not all, according to the layer of minerals that has formed on it it must be no less than two million years old here.
