Los Antiguos (parte 5)

El viaje había tomado veinte días desde la BN34, Saul jamás pensó que estaban tan lejos del mundo en cuestión. Cuando al final de los cinco días de desaceleración, la curvatura de la luz y el desplazamiento al rojo, permitieron a las cámaras de la nave, ofrecer una imagen visible del nuevo objeto, la vista resultó decepcionante; su parecido con el de un agujero negro era notable, aunque resplandecía con un leve halo de un tenue y profundo color rojo.

―¿Que tanto nos podemos aproximar? ―preguntó la doctora Faith Ibrahimovic, una astro bióloga venida de la academia de Niobe.

―Aunque esta es una nave de impulso espacio temporal, estimo que no deberíamos ir más allá de trescientos o doscientos mil kilómetros ―respondió Elías Vicentelli, un astrofísico de Heracles ―. De lo contrario, no tendríamos tiempo de alcanzar la velocidad suficiente, como para escapar a su campo gravitacional y seríamos atraídos a su superficie, y desgarrados en el proceso. No conozco los parámetros de esta nave y tal vez me equivoque, pero creo que esa esa sería una distancia de observación segura.

―Si me permite, doctor Vicentelli, puedo profundizar un poco más en su respuesta a la doctora Ibrahimovic ―retumbó repentinamente la clara y vibrante voz de Carión, la presencia Inu en la misión, quién hasta el momento había permanecido casi en silencio, limitándose sólo a las formalidades que fuesen necesarias ―. Esta nave posee un motor de impulso espacio temporal modificado, con una mezcla de tecnología humana e inu, literalmente podríamos aproximarnos a menos de dos mil kilómetros de la superficie de la estrella y aun así acelerar lo suficientemente rápido, como para lograr escapar de su campo gravitacional.

―Gracias Carión ―intervino el capitán Reginald Anderson, entrando repentinamente en la cabina ―. Estamos a una distancia de tres millones de kilómetros de la superficie del objeto, el planeta se encuentra a poco menos de un decimo de año luz de aquí, una distancia segura cuando esta estrella era una super gigante roja con una radio superior a mil millones de kilómetros.

―¿Ya se ha calculado la edad de esta estrella negra? ―preguntó Vicentelli.

―Si me permite capitán ―intervino Carión, quien prosiguió tras una señal afirmativa de Anderson―. Las simulaciones basadas en tasa de emisión de radiación de tipo Hawking y Plank del objeto, junto al modelo de formación y evolución estelar y de la Vía Láctea, han permitido datarlo en unos tres mil quinientos millones de años, sin embargo, esta información no es del todo precisa, pues los modelos no permiten describir con exactitud estos objetos, nuestro conocimiento sobre ellos es completamente teórico.

―Precisamente una de nuestras misiones es recopilar toda la información posible sobre la estrella ―continuó Anderson―. Este es un paseo de cortesía para que la observen personalmente todos, antes de dirigirnos a la estación orbital del planeta. Un equipo de astrofísicos permanecerá con nosotros en la nave para trabajar en la observación de la estrella, el resto de los miembros del equipo científico, se quedará en la estación para trabajar en lo relacionado con la civilización. Carión nos acompañará en ambas ubicaciones.

―Por supuesto capitán, pero requeriré que se establezca un enlace cuántico entre los sistemas de la nave y la estación ―dijo Carión.

―Claro Carión, eso ya estaba previsto ―respondió Anderson.

Después de girar al alrededor de la estrella, la nave se dirigió rumbo al planeta, que seguía una órbita muy excéntrica e inclinada sesenta y dos grados, respecto al plano de rotación de la estrella, el oscuro mundo parecía haber sido un planeta de clase theta o iota, sin embargo, ahora se trata de uno clase lambda, un mundo con temperaturas por debajo de los tres grados kelvin, sin atmósfera, pues todos sus gases se precipitaron a la superficie, formando una delgada coraza helada, bajo ella se encontraba su océano, ahora convertido en una capa de hielo de agua, y un manto de silicatos, hierro y aluminio, que en algún momento fueron fluidos, así como un núcleo de hierro, calentado por las fuerzas de marera de la estrella, pero hoy no eran más que una gigantesca roca, sólida y helada.

El planeta tenía un diámetro mayor y era más masivo que cualquiera de los habitado por los hombres en la actualidad, pero no mucho más que la Tierra, su antiguo mundo. De igual forma, su gravedad era al menos dos y media veces mayor a cualquier mundo humano; por lo que trabajar en su superficie no sería nada agradable, esto, ignorando las temperaturas próximas al cero absoluto.

Los miembros de la misión científica observaban la fría y desolada superficie a través de los monitores de la cabina, donde se proyectaban las imágenes que eran tomadas por las cámaras de la nave, que sobrevolaba el planeta, dándoles un “tour de cortesía”, como había dicho el capitán, fue entonces cuando ante ellos pudieron ver las primeras ruinas, una bien conservada ciudad formada por lo que parecían ser varas edificaciones en forma de domo esférico, que lucían pulidas y reflectantes como cristal, ante las luces de la nave. Su aspecto y tamaño diferían mucho de la que había sido encontrada en el otro planeta.

―Esta es una de las ciudades que pudimos encontrar en el planeta ―dijo Anderson desde el puente, a través de los comunicadores de la nave, lo que tomó por sorpresa a los que se encontraban en la cabina, que, por momentos, pensaron se trataba de Carión ―. Hasta ahora se han identificado no menos de trescientas similares, por todo lo que fueron tierras emergidas y las sondas han detectado otras tantas en el fondo oceánico, en las proximidades de las costas.

―¿Han iniciado la exploración de alguna de ellas?― preguntó Saul, mientras observaba atentamente la imagen proyectada en el monitor.

―Sólo desde el exterior, usando imagen térmica, rayos X, sonar y en este momento se encuentran haciendo un escaneo de positrones ―respondió Anderson, aun por el comunicador ―. Estamos aguardando a su llegada para que ustedes decidan como entrar, no deseamos que manos inexpertas arruinen algo.

―Me parece excelente que hayan tenido ese cuidado ―asintió Saul.

Después de sobrevolar otras dos ciudades, el “tour de cortesía” concluyó y la nave se elevó para abandonar la atmósfera, rumbo a la estación provisional de exploración. A la llegada de la misión les esperaba una noticia que parecía aportar más preguntas que respuestas a la situación.

Los criptógrafos, habían realizado un avance en el descifrado del código almacenado en los cristales y se trataba de procedimientos operativos de la nave, así como de la interfaz entre los mecanismos y los dispositivos electrónicos y al parecer, casi toda la información almacenada era de este tipo, no habían descubierto aun información sobre la cultura de los antiguos. Sin embargo, este avance, permitía empezar a entender la forma de codificación de los antiguos, así como sus matemáticas y razonamiento lógico.

Ahora se esperaba que la exploración de estas extensas ciudades, diera alguna pista sobre los antiguos y su civilización.

The Ancients (part 5)

The journey had taken twenty days from the BN34, Saul never thought they were so far from the world in question. When, at the end of the five days of deceleration, the curvature of the light and the red shift allowed the ship's cameras to provide a visible image of the new object, the view was disappointing; its resemblance to a black hole was striking, though it glowed with a faint halo of deep red.

-How close can we get, - asked Dr. Faith Ibrahimovic, an astrobiologist from the Academy of Niobe.

-Although this is a space-time impulse ship, I estimate that we should not go beyond three or two hundred thousand kilometers, - answered Elias Vicentelli, an astrophysicist from Herakles-. Otherwise we would not have time to reach sufficient speed to escape its gravitational field and we would be drawn to its surface and torn in the process. I don't know the parameters of this ship and I may be wrong, but I think that would be a safe viewing distance.

-If you will allow me, Dr. Vicentelli, I can go a little deeper into your answer to Dr. Ibrahimovic, -suddenly echoed the clear and vibrant voice of Carion, the Inu presence in the mission, who until now had remained almost silent, limiting himself only to the necessary formalities-. Carion will accompany us to both locations.

The planet was larger in diameter and more massive than any of those inhabited by men today, but not much larger than the Earth, their ancient world. Similarly, its gravity was at least two and a half times greater than any human world, so working on its surface would not be pleasant at all, ignoring temperatures close to absolute zero.

The members of the scientific mission observed the cold and desolate surface through the monitors of the cabin, where the images were projected that were taken by the cameras of the ship, which was flying over the planet, giving them a "courtesy tour", as the captain had said, it was then when they could see the first ruins, a well conserved city formed by what seemed to be spherical dome shaped buildings, which looked polished and reflective as glass, before the lights of the ship. Their appearance and size were very different from what had been found on the other planet.

-This is one of the cities we could find on the planet, -said Anderson from the bridge, through the ship's communicators, which took those in the cabin by surprise, and they thought at times that it was Carion-. So far no less than three hundred similar ones have been identified, for all that was emerged land, and the probes have detected as many others on the ocean floor, near the coasts.

-Have you started exploring any of them? -saul asked, as he watched closely the image projected on the monitor.

After flying over two more cities the 'courtesy tour' ended and the ship rose to leave the atmosphere for the temporary scanning station. When the mission arrived, they were awaited by news that seemed to raise more questions than answers about the situation.

The cryptographers had made a breakthrough in deciphering the code stored in the crystals and these were the ship's operating procedures, as well as the interface between the mechanisms and electronic devices and it seems that almost all the information stored was of this type, they had not yet discovered information about the culture of the ancients. This advance, however, made it possible to begin to understand the form of coding of the ancients, as well as their mathematics and logical reasoning.

It was now hoped that exploration of these vast cities would give some clue about the ancients and their civilization.
