Garden Journal, A Greenhouse Update

avatar

Hello, hivers! Welcome to my greenhouse!

Looking back on my posts, it seems that it's been a month since my last greenhouse post. I have 10 tomato plants growing in the big pots in the greenhouse. There are 4 heirloom Amish Paste tomato plants, 4 Roma tomato plants, and 2 heirloom Blue Beech tomato plants.

I've been growing tomato plants in the greenhouse for 5 years now and have learned a few things about the process. I have found that in my greenhouse, paste type tomato plants produce more tomatoes than other types. Apparently the paste type flowers self pollinate easier than the other types of tomato flowers, at least in my situation. I will get lots of flowers on the beefsteak types in the greenhouse, but they don't set very many tomatoes. This is why I stick to growing paste type plants in the greenhouse.

Most types of tomatoes will self pollinate outside because the wind moves the plant around and helps with the process. There's not much wind going through the greenhouse, even with both doors open all summer, so I have to shake the plant stalks to promote pollination. Last summer, I used a fan to create some air movement on the plants, to help with pollination, and also to make it more difficult for the bugs to infest the plants.

The tomato plants in the greenhouse have a headstart on the plants in the garden. I started those seeds first, and I transplanted them into the big pots in early May.

These are the 4 Amish Paste plants. I put them all on the east end of the greenhouse. The front of the greenhouse faces south. The fifth plant is one of the Blue Beech plants.

Looking to the west end of the greenhouse, you can see the Roma plants. The 2 Blue Beech plants are in the middle, by the white post.

Here's a look in from the west door.

Some of the plants are starting to produce flowers now. These flowers are on the Amish Paste plants. There's only a few so far, but it's a start.

The Roma plants seemed to have gotten an earlier start on flowering. Here's a couple of pictures of them.

Now I just have to get some pollination going. 😀

That's all I have for this greenhouse update, thanks for checking it out!

They are coming along quite nicely, I have found what helps is tapping the flower pod on the plant to get more pollen out,

I am growing Amish Paste this year because it was all I could find when I was finally able to look for seeds.

I think you'll like the tomatoes that the plants put out. I'm a real fan of them now.
