More Pictures From the Garden

Hello, and welcome to da garden, eh!

It's the first week of August, and things are starting to happen in the garden now. I've been picking beans for more than a week, and I've also been picking a few yellow summer squash. I'm waiting for the tomatoes to start getting ripe, there's a few that are starting to show the first blush of red now, so I don't think it will be very long before I have my first ripe tomatoes.

It's a bit hard to tell on this picture, but there's a few tomatoes starting to turn from green toward red.

There's more tomatoes than what you can see in this picture, they blend in with the leaves in the bright sunlight. The marigolds are blooming nicely now also.

I picked more beans today. This is my third picking of beans so far. The yellow beans are starting to slow down their flowering now, but the green beans are just getting started.
One of the reasons that I like to grow the beans in containers or raised beds is that I can sit down to pick them instead of bending over. I have an inexpensive rolling garden seat for picking, and other garden chores.

The green bean plants are starting to produce a lot of beans now.

This is today's harvest. Not bad considering how many plants I have.

I'm also growing a variety of dry pole bean this year. I've been growing this variety, the Hidatsa bean, for several years now. I'm growing some of the beans in with the corn , but I also put up a trellis for a row of them this year.

The carrots are continuing to develop nicely.

The white potato and gold potato plants are still growing. Hopefully they're developing nice potatoes, but it's still too early to dig any up to find out.

The red potato plants are just about done growing. These are an early potato, and I planted them first. I need to get back into this plot and do some weed pulling...

The yellow summer squash seem to be doing well. There are more big squash that I need to pick soon.
DSCN3586.JPG

This is one of the heirloom Potimarron squash. They're starting to get bigger now. This is the first time I've grown them so I don't know how big they get.

My zucchini plants are finally starting to grow now. I planted them late, and they took a long time to get past the transplant shock. I finally have a couple of tiny zucchinis on the plants now. The plants are on the edge of the red potato patch.

The corn is getting really tall, and finally starting to put out tassles. This is a field corn variety called Bloody Butcher. It's an heirloom red corn that was the most popular variety until yellow corn became widely available in the early 1900s
It's a flour corn, but we grow it to make hominy.
DSCN3589.JPG

I'm guessing that the tallest stalks are about 11 to 12 feet tall now. I'm just short of 6 feet tall.

One more picture for you. This is one of our two apple trees in the yard. This is probably it's most productive year so far. You can also see one of the grape vines behind it. I'm trying to keep the new vine growth of the grape vine from taking over the apple tree.

That's all I have for this post, thanks for stopping by to check it out!
