Propping Up the Roof of the Camper

avatar

Hello, and welcome to my page!

Winter is definitely here now, and with it a bit of snow. We haven't had very much snow yet, but it started me thinking about the roof on my camper trailer.

Last winter I had to prop up the roof from inside the camper because the snow and ice were causing it to sag badly. If I had not caught it when I did, the roof would probably have collapsed from the weight. I wrote a post about that adventure in December of 2019. You can read about that by following this link.

Because of that mess, I wanted to get started on propping up the roof before it became a problem. Over the course of last summer, I had rebuilt most of the roof supports in the trailer to give them more strength, but I think it's still a good idea to prop it up from inside, just in case.

This is my camper trailer, the picture was taken in March of 2020, there was still a lot of snow on the ground then.

Because I'm not a big fan of the cold, the first thing I did was to set up my little propane heater in the trailer. That white streak on the picture is a couple of snowflakes falling past the lens.

Here's a look at the center of the roof inside the trailer. You can see how I rebuilt the supports on either side of the roof vent hatch, as well as the rebuilt support to the rear of it, and the ones to the front that I still need to work on.

The trailer is still rather a mess inside, with stuff stacked randomly.

I put several support beams under the roof boards to hold up the center of the roof. The last one is too long for where it needs to be, so I'm going to have to cut one to fit there so it can be vertical.

I still should put a couple more supports in the trailer, especially up front. I haven't had much ambition to go outside for the past few days, but I'm hoping to get back to it sometime this week. I need to put a new propane tank on my little heater, I ran the old one out of gas.
Sometimes I think I should clean the trailer out, but then I think, that can wait until spring and warmer weather.

I'm hoping to actually use the trailer next summer, but I still have to finish fixing it. I don't care much about what's on the inside, but I need to finish rebuilding the frame and fix the remaining holes in the aluminum skin. Then it can be used for basic things like sleeping in it instead of a tent.

That's all I have for this post, thanks for stopping by to check it out!

I was worried about the cold in there, but I see you have your propane heater. Excellent
