They say necessity is the mother of invention, and on this occasion, waiting for the phrase of the day on @daily.prompt has given me the chance to take on a double creative challenge. Following a brief delay in the initiative, today we’re presented with two powerful concepts at the same time: “auditor” and “acquit me!”. Rather than tackling them separately, I’ve decided to “kill two birds with one stone” by incorporating both words into my entry. Through a story packed with technical jargon and accounting tension, I aim to explore that almost mystical sense of relief one feels when the figures finally add up. With this piece, I’m catching up on my outstanding exercises, leaving me ready to receive tomorrow’s prompt—25 July—with my tally at zero and my rhythm restored. I hope you enjoy this narrative balance!
The Verdict of Ink and Paper
The air in Don Ricardo’s office was thick, heavy with the smell of old paper and cold coffee. Sitting opposite him, the external auditor—a man with an icy stare and surgical precision—was going through the bank reconciliations for the last quarter for the third time. On the desk, the worn leather folders held the fate of the business: tax credit invoices, purchase and sales ledgers, and those VAT returns that gave him a headache every early morning.
The sound of the pages turning was rhythmic, like a guillotine slowly descending. “There’s a discrepancy in the tax base for May,” the expert stated without looking up. Ricardo’s pulse quickened. He recalled the sleepless nights spent trying to balance the stock records and the constant fear of an administrative penalty that would shut down his livelihood. Concepts such as amortisation, asset provisions and accumulated depreciation felt at that moment like a foreign language designed to condemn him.

The silence dragged on whilst the man recalculated the accounting entries on his slide-rule calculator. Ricardo, overcome with nervousness, watched as the red pen crossed out and corrected. Finally, after a manual adjustment and a check of a withholding tax receipt that had been misplaced amongst the credit notes, the man sighed and closed his heavy briefcase.
“Everything adds up to the last cent, Ricardo. The cash flow is consistent and there are no tax omissions,” he said, handing him the certificate of compliance.
In a surge of almost mystical relief at this declaration of financial clearance, Ricardo exclaimed with a victorious smile: “Absolve me! (Acquit me!)”. The accountant nodded with a slight grimace. The oppressive weight of the figures had vanished; at last, his accounts and his spirit were back to zero, free of guilt in the face of the tax authorities’ relentless arithmetic.

(¡Acquit me!)".

I feel so much relief for Don Ricardo, a man with a livelihood to protect, not a criminal, nonetheless acquitted because of his own care in the end!
