An afternoon under the banner of Flourish
Lucas looks at me, confused, from across the table. We’ve just watched the waiter serve us two cafés con leche with such an exaggerated flick of the wrist that it looked as if he were unveiling a national monument. The man removed the napkin from his arm and, with a theatrical gesture —what we call here with a flourish— placed the bill on the marble counter as if it were a royal scroll.
‘Why all this fuss over a three-dollar coffee?’ asks Lucas in Spanish, lowering his voice.
That’s the point. Lucas, with his Latin pragmatism, seeks warmth or efficiency. But here, the flourish is a different tool altogether. I explain to him that this final flourish isn’t just courtesy; it’s often a shield or a sleight of hand.

Look at the table in the corner. There’s a man in an impeccable suit, the sort that screams ‘Wall Street’. He’s finishing a presentation on his laptop to a client who looks bored. Suddenly, the man in the suit slams the laptop shut, slides a contract across the table and, with a theatrical gesture, hands the client a gold pen.
There’s no honesty in that flourish—there’s pressure. It’s the visual equivalent of fireworks: they shine so brightly that they blind you to the fact that the contract contains small print that’s going to ruin you. It’s ‘style over substance’. The Anglo knows that, if the ending is spectacular, the audience will forget that the plot was mediocre.
We walked towards the exit and witnessed a common sight on the pavements of these cities: a couple arguing. He’d put his foot in it; you could tell from his hunched posture. Suddenly, he pulled a bouquet of flowers wrapped in shiny paper from behind his back and offered it to her, stretching out his arms – once again, with a theatrical gesture.
‘That’s what you felt was hypocrisy,’ I say to Lucas as we dodge a taxi. ‘That bouquet isn’t an apology; it’s a flourish. It’s the wrapping that tries to cover up the fact that he has no real words to fix the mess. It’s using form to camouflage a lack of substance.’
In the English-speaking world, learning to spot the flourish is learning to survive. It’s knowing how to distinguish between the master craftsman who proudly signs his work and the charlatan who waves his hands so you don’t see where the coin is.
‘So,’ says Lucas as we step onto the Underground, ‘is a “theatrical gesture” like the make-up of a lie?’
‘Sometimes,’ I reply. ‘Other times, it’s simply the joy of someone who knows they’ve done something well and adds a silk bow to it. The trick is to look at what’s left on the table once the gesture is over and the sound of the applause has died down.’
If, when the magician lowers his hand, the rabbit is still there, that’s mastery. If all that’s left is smoke and a hefty bill, then, my dear Lucas, it was just a flourish.

PROMPT: «with a flourish»

Cover of the initiative.

Dedicated to all those writers who contribute, day by day, to making our planet a better world.

—A veces —respondo—.

Lo hace with a flourish.
