Don’t spend what you haven’t earned yet

‘Not another loan,’ they say to themselves – many of them out loud in front of the mirror – as if their reflection could sign a contract of common sense. I haven’t been one to mortgage my entire life or put at risk what took so much effort to build (for my parents and me). To tell the truth, I’ve only ever borrowed specific amounts to put out immediate fires. And I’ve always honoured my debts. Meeting my financial obligations is almost a survival instinct because debt eats away at me from the inside; it’s an anxiety that robs me of the air I breathe.

However, the balance of my financial morality is strangely askew. I’m impeccable when it comes to paying, but a chronic coward when it comes to collecting. If someone owes me money, my mind turns into a scriptwriters’ room, conjuring up tragedies to justify their delay. ‘They must have had a medical emergency’, ‘perhaps they’ve lost their job’, I tell myself, making excuses for the debtor whilst my own pocket suffers the abuse of those who know of this weakness. Collecting debts makes me feel absurdly dizzy, a kind of inverted guilt that shouldn’t belong to me (at my age, I should have got over it by now).

On those nights when insomnia brings out the calculator, my memory always comes to my rescue with my dad’s unmistakable voice. His firm and wise piece of life advice echoes through the room: *‘Don’t spend money you haven’t earned yet’. That phrase sank deep into my very being. It’s an anchor when despair tries to push me into asking for financial help. With age and experience, I’ve come to realise that peace of mind carries no interest rate and that true luxury is sleeping without owing anything to anyone. That’s why I close my eyes and repeat to myself once more: no more loans.

A decir verdad, solo he pedido cantidades precisas para apagar incendios inmediatos. Y siempre he honrado mis deudas.
